Twilight and Luna trotted along the empty corridors – it was long past midnight, Night Court had adjourned, and most of the doors had been locked for the remainder of the night. Twilight struck a mock-ninja pose, looking around sneakily as they rounded a corner, and Luna giggled, remembering her own late-night escapades around the castle she had lived in during her fillyhood.
"Let's go to the ballroom," she whispered to the lavender mare, a smile on her face, and her new best friend nodded eagerly. The two shadows in the darkness tried their best to keep their hoofsteps soundless, scouting around for routes without guards like foals at play, and finally made their way to the large ornate door.
With a glow of her horn, Luna opened the door a crack, and the two mares slipped inside. The spacious room, which had been bustling with music and the chatter of ponies in the evening, was now empty save for the two of them and silent, but more beautiful because of it. Moonlight streamed from the wide windows, blessing everything it touched with a magical luminescence.
Twilight slowly led Luna to the grand piano standing in front of the elevated platform at the end of the ballroom. No longer playing the game, their hooves made a clip clop on the pristine floor tiles.
The lilac unicorn sat down on the rectangular chair in front the musical instrument, grinning sheepishly.
Luna giggled when Twilight opened the cover of the grand piano, revealing the black-and-white keys underneath. "You play the piano?"
"Yeah..." the unicorn replied demurely. "I had some lessons from my foalsitter when I was a filly, and well, I still play it occasionally, even though I stopped taking lessons when I was older."
"Can you play something for me?" the alicorn said, beaming at her unicorn companion.
The unicorn flushed. "I'm not that good really," she admitted sheepishly.
The goddess of the moon sat down next to the piano and turned to Twilight. "Please, I would love to hear you play something."
"I -uhm- I might be a little rusty, it's been a while since the last time I've played."
Her greater than average magical power allowed her to use a trick she had picked up while studying under Celestia – she used her magic to reach the keys most ponies had trouble with and could play more fluently than even most professionals could claim to.
She put her hooves to the keys, and pressed a note, ringing high and clear in the empty ballroom. She thought for a couple of seconds, the first few bars coming to her even as she played, and then her magic danced along more freely as she remembered the notes. The music flowed from her hooves like a stream, tranquil and mournful.
Luna watched, breathless, from beside Twilight. The lilac mare's eyes were half-lidded now as she poured heart and soul into the melody. The keys winked as they were pressed by the skilled touch of the unicorn, twinkles and harmonious chiming escaping the strings as they were struck by the mallets.
Twilight pressed down on the pedals with her hind hooves and the notes merged, like rainwater pooling into a creek then overflowing, running and gurgling with liveliness.
The tinkling of the piano keys painted a resonant picture of the starry sky, a million sparkles waltzing in the heavenly cosmos, and Luna was reminded of flying in the night breeze with the gentle wind tickling her feathers. A joyous smile spread across her face and she closed her eyes, mesmerized by the notes that were weaving a magic into the very air.
Twilight smiled as well, the higher notes of the music piece now as lofty as the sun when it reached its zenith, while the lower ones rapped out a rhythmic beat like the thundering gallop at the running of the leaves.
The speed at which Twilight’s magic danced increased to a flit, like the fluttering of a hummingbird’s wings, and Luna finally took a deep breath; she felt her heart beating very fast as the riveting melody continued to gush from the unicorn’s hooves.
Twilight breathed in synch with the music; her head and shoulders lowered toward the keyboard as the tune softened, her magic now a feather-light caress on the black-and-white keys.
Under her skillful guidance the musical phrase glided into a pianissimo, and slowly, ever so slowly, Twilight lifted her hooves and let the final note linger like a sigh in the air before fading away as her hind leg let go of the pedal.
Luna gazed at Twilight, and the unicorn grinned sheepishly back. It was a while before any of them spoke or moved, the first being Luna draping a foreleg around Twilight’s withers.
“That was beautiful,” the lunar princess said softly.
Twilight blushed, and Luna found her face growing a bit warm as they looked into each other’s eyes. The moonlight illuminated their faces, and Twilight thought the alicorn’s lashes were incredibly pretty and her mane was sparkling more than the librarian had ever seen before.
“Thanks,” she breathed, much quieter than necessary.
Luna leaned closer, and Twilight felt her breath catch in her throat; and then she didn’t know why her feelings were suddenly a confusing mixture of disappointment and relief when the taller mare rested her head on hers. She could feel Luna’s breathing as they leaned lightly on each other and for a while they simply rested in the position in the serene silence of the room.

One of many scenes which I won't ever be using, thought I might as well post it here so it wouldn't be that much a waste
