A new season begins. · 11:34pm
Alright, in case you've somehow been living under a rock, today was the day that Season 4 premiered, and it was awesome. I can see a lot of fics suddenly not working any more, but since I haven't actually been directly contradicted by it, I can't even complain there.
However, there is one niggling little detail, and while I don't think it's actually a spoiler of anything, I'm gonna sort of warn you now that it exists. So if you REALLY want no spoilers, just stop. It's real easy.
Anyway, the season premiere takes place on the Summer Sun Celebration, and between what Princess Celestia say and how all of the friends are talking, it's heavily implied that this is the first one since Princess Luna returned. Meaning all 3 seasons happened over the course of one year.
Now, I did the math, and removing any two-parter episodes, the season 3 finale, and the movie from the list, there were 56 letters to the princess. (Well, 55, technically, because they didn't send one after Hearth's Warming Eve...) And, unless their year is different (which is quite possible) there are only 52 weeks in a year. This means Twilight, her friends, and/or Equestria suffers a drama of some sort more than once a week. (And don't get me started with the episodes that take multiple days/weeks to go from start to finish.)
So, I came up with a theory to make Equestria not seem like it's falling apart at the seams (even though all of the bad guys decided it would be a good thing to get freed at once). In my head, Princess Luna needed a year or so to recover from being blasted by the Elements, explaining why her appearance changed between season one and two and why her first reappearance was at Nightmare Night, which takes place (assumedly) after the Summer Sun Celebration. Princess Celestia would have continued to have a heavy heart during the celebration where her sister was recovering, and would feel infinitely better at the next one once her sister returned.
This would make everything from the 3 seasons happen over 2 years, which is slightly more believable, and everypony talking about how "it feels like just yesterday" would still be applicable. This also has the bonus side effect of lowering the tragedy rate in Equestria to about one every two weeks AND making Twilight not feel quite so amazingly powerful that she went from student to ULTRA PRINCESS in one year.
Just my thoughts on it, and it was bugging me all night (well... morning) and I figured I'd share it because I'm hyped.
I am so excited for the new season! I don't care how many ships sink or how many fics go down in a blaze of canon fire.
