Now, on to the topic of this blog: Headcanon. Specifically, "Love Mine"-based headcanon. I've been considering posting another set of sidestories (either as new story or subchapter(s) in the main story, the latter of which I'm considering because this time I'll be staying in Alternate's point of view*, focusing on headcanon--Alternate, because he's the outsider of both sides of the conflict, and consequently an outsider of both cultures. This is basically what I'm talking about:
*the reason I didn't consider this for the POV side stories is because I'm firmly against POV-shifting unless it is set-up within the first chapter and used constantly and consistently--none of these rules apply to the "Love Mine" POV side stories.
One of the things I was most curious about I had to be surprisingly discrete to study, given it’s nature: numbers and counting. It’s easy enough to discover that ponies use a decimal system, but the big questions remained: Why and how—with humans the answer is easy enough, but ponies, with only four hooves and no digits? I found nothing about number histories in any books I managed to get my hooves on. I made little headway until I got the idea to watch foals specifically as they counted out basic numbers at places like stores where their parents encouraged practice; the solution that was almost instantly unveiled to me is as simple as it is ingenious! Each hoof has a number attached to it, from one to four, and higher numbers are made by adding them together thusly:5 = 4 + 1
6 = 4 + 2
7 = 4 + 3
8 = 4 + 3 + 1
9 = 4 + 3 + 2
10 = 4 + 3 + 2 + 1
By using the hooves, counting transforms from something as boring as holding up fingers into little dances! -something I suspect the Equestrian education system must take advantage of; it makes me wonder how much more quickly foals learn their numbers compared to human children thanks to the much more engaging, less “sterile” method… and in turn how such rapid development in mathematics would affect them throughout life and, again in turn, the entirety of Equestria and the advancement in sciences… Such powerful, unanswerable questions arrived at from such a mundane subject.
This is just something I came up with on the spot to explain something that's been bothering me, especially since I had ponies in "Love Mine" use metric measurements, and that I want to include in my (and the story's) headcanon, but I don't think I'd be able to fit it very cleverly into the main story, especially since I consider the following to have happened sometime while Alternate was in Apploosa, and since that part is all done with... Basically, what this would deal with is (likely) very short snippets on subjects that don't impact the story of "Love Mine". By the way, if you thought I ever included something that's not important... you might want to get to rereading and reconsider what you once dismissed and therefore might've forgotten... I know, I write paragraphs that seem like they could be chapters all on their own, but all of it is important in some way or another (can you recall what spell Alternate had trouble with? I can promise it'll come up again...), some of those ways being more obscure or "behind the scenes" than others (such as SPOILERS the encyclopedia articles being included to not only portray the "medical" way Changelings are (not) studied, but also show how far knowledge had (not) come--the latter of which was also intended as a hint to what Alternate learns later about ponies' knowledge on Changelings: How did they get so far in so little time? It almost seems like... there might have been lies in the Changeling entry... more than the obvious, even. -perhaps.).
Anyway, the above headcanon short is currently all I have down for this project, and the potential is extensive. -too extensive. So much so that I'm having trouble coming up with other topics, so I turn to you for ideas! Please, if there's some subject that you'd like to hear about in my headcanon for "Love Mine", either about ponies, Changelings, or (better) both, go ahead and ask! (Before any of you can make a comment about this: Yes, I'll also address how Changelings learn numbers and count, but that's for later.) Unfortunately, as much as I'd like to, especially since it could turn up more ideas, I'll in all likelihood not be responding to requests here in order to prevent potential spoilers with suggested subjects that will turn up the story line...
Lastly, what would you think of a Ditzy Doo who calls herself Derpy and constantly speaks in the third-person? (Those of you who have picked up Steins;Gate should know where I'm going with this!)
