Complaining. Because I have to. · 12:39am
Let's get the important part out of the way. I'm working on the story, but don't expect it to be to great. The next part might be a bit bumpy.
So, I apologize in advance for what I'm about to write. I'm sure that you guys have heard plenty about this already, but I like ranting about these things and I actually have an audience. What am I talking about? Season finale. Yep. Another armchair reviewer. Sorry.
So, I'll just say it. It was horrendous. And I'm not just saying that to be the edgy author who hates the source material. To begin with, there is a limit to the number of times you can sing a song in an episode. Especially if every song has the same theme of 'one's true self'. They hit that limit in the first ten minutes. I felt like I was watching one of the many saturday morning cartoons that I regularly make fun of (To the annoyance of my sisters). I've read that people liked the vast number of songs, and they felt like they were watching a wonderful musical. Now, there are fundamental problems I have with musicals, but I won't let that interfere with what I'm trying to say. However, a musical has a huge advantage over this episode. A musical doesn't let their songs overtake the plot.
Which is my second point. There was no plot. In less than ten minutes the conflict is shown and solved. With more songs. The songs helped in speeding up the segments that explained what the problem was, and what the solution accomplished. There was very little exposition, which lead to a lack of a climax, and ended with the most boring solution possible. It felt like the whole thing was just a side note that the creators did not take seriously. It was just a plot element that gave purpose to the second half of the episode.
Now, I really have no problem with Twilight becoming an alicorn. With her power she was basically one already, albeit without wings. What got me with it though was the fact that it ended what the show was built off of. The premise for the show is that Twilight was supposed to discover what friendship was about with her (relatively new) friends. Now she has apparently done just that and gotten her rewards for it. She is now a ruler of the country she once served. Great. Now what? By taking away the one thing that made the series have a overall plot, the future of the show has become dark. We are now without premise.
Now, I am not making a final judgement. This finale was actually the first part of three episodes. Apparently, the producers already saw the giant hole that changing a major plot point has done, and have a new direction to take the show. I will admit, I am curious. The producers made a horrible episode, that made a horrible decision. However, they have promised that they are two steps ahead of me. They have my attention. Yet, they are walking on thin ice. Their next steps must be carefully taken if they don't want to mess this up. Changing the whole reason for a show to exist is bad territory, and very few make it out.
By the way, if you liked the finale and want to tell me I'm being a butthurt crybaby, I do not mind. There might be some very good reasons that this episode was 'the greatest evar made!' However, I have yet to see some. If you have one, don't be afraid to share. I might sound like your typical internet douche bag, but that's because I am. No, no, I jest.
