MLP:FiM S04E01-E02 - Princess Twilight Sparkle
A pretty strong opening to season 4, I think. The idea of those 6 keys seems like a neat one that shouldn't completely overtake the storytelling. Why they don't just ask Discord about them is beyond me, though.
A lot of great wordplay in these episodes. I won't just go and list the dialogue here. Plenty enough neurotic twilight in this one to keep everyone happy. Also, the visual jokes were pretty good, too. I mean, Spike and his Seatbelt, for one example. Puns were good. Example:
The everfree rock reptile. Geddit? It's a cROCKodile! Good sound effects on that one by the way.
The animation looks a bit different on the character models. I'm guessing they had to make a bunch of new ones for twilight and the other princesses, they haven't had much airtime (comparatively speaking). I might be imagining it from not having seen any of it recently. Talking of animation, that was a pretty awesome transition from Princess Luna to N. Moon.
The appearance of the vines seemed perfectly timed to me. When I saw the vines I immediately thought about triffids, but that's stupid. These things aren't really sentient, are they? But how they managed to sneak the princesses from Canterlot to the middle of the Everfree, without anyone noticing, seems a bit cheaty. Even for Discord's kind of machination. Also, Wilhelm scream!
Sweetie belle. She has a very piercing scream. Also, more magic than just sparks. So that's going somewhere, I guess.
Something interesting about the lore of Equestria: If the princesses go missing, and the sun and moon appear as they do then this would seem to indicate this is their natural position about the planet (opposite each other). It doesn't look like that, but I'm guessing that's what was implied.
Discord. Heh. Discord, keeping things classy as always. Or should that be the reverse of classy? Either way, his execution was great, and there's not much more that can be said. This cane was just hilarious though:
Sounded a bit like Dan , from "Dan vs" when he said "besmirching". Brilliant. 4th wall breaking, yep. An awesome character.
Zecora seems to have no end to the potions she has. I mean, why would she have a potion that only works on Alicorns? Well, she is a crazy zebra hermit who lives in a magic forest, who are we to judge? Either way, I imagine it's painful to drink milk that makes your eyes glow. Ouch.
I really like to see the "history" aspects of TV shows with a lot of lore. I've always enjoyed the history episodes of Adventure Time and this MLP episode was no exception to that rule. I would like to know more about the origins of that tree. Anyway, it was well pulled off, even if Nightmare Moon's "reign of terror" only really lasted a few minutes. Lore seemed to hype it up a bit more than that.
So yeah, some good solid episodes to start a new season.
What rating system was I using? oh who cares, have some Yogstars.
Thoughts on this episode, feel free to add them?
