For 2,000 years the Celestial Empire has ruled over Equestria under the guidance of the co-empresses, Nightmare Moon and Celestia. However, as unrest grows among its citizens Nightmare Moon begins to worry about the way they rule, and a chance meeting with a unicorn named Twilight Sparkle sparks the beginning of a rebellion in her mind. Together, the two form a new nation for freedom and equality, and go to war against the Celestial Empire.

She couldn't believe her sister left the night orderly and methodical. It was in Celestia to do such, but it still infuriated her. The nights were meant to be vibrant and ever changing. No two were supposed to be alike. Well, it hardly mattered now. She was back. She could change the constellations at her whim. She could alter the moon's glow and color. She could even decide whether the sky should be graced by cloud, aurora, or not. She was back, and every night was different.

Luna is a second year student at the Equestrian International University. As a recluse with no friends she heads through life hardly paying attention to it. That changes when, at the start of the year, she gains a new roommate named Twilight Sparkle. Despite initial hostilities the two grow close, and set out to accomplish their dreams with music.
