It's a sad time for the employees that got screwed here for sure. 150 people laid off, needing to look for new jobs. But let me say this, don't blame Disney. Lucasarts had this coming for quite a while. Why am I against Lucasarts in this case? Well, it's because I was a big fan of them.
Back in the day, I played the hell out of Lucasarts games. Games that forever influenced me. Hell, some of these games helped me gain a better understanding of the world. The game that influenced me was a game known as: Tie Fighter.
Tie Fighter was a flight simulator game where you played as a pilot in the Imperial Navy. And your job was to take down Rebel Terrorists that dared threaten the people of the Empire with the dastardly acts. Paints Star Wars in a different picture when you say it like that right? I'd say, even today, that the game is one of the best games I've ever played. The gameplay was awesome, the replay value was high, the story was fantastic, and for the time the Graphics were phenomenal. In fact, you could say that most of the Star Wars Flight Simulators were great. The Rouge Squadron series, the Starfighter series, and X-Wing were all great games.
Lucasarts also made one of the first great shooters. You all remember Doom right? That violent game that parents hated? Well, here came the alternative: Dark Forces. You played as an ex-Imperial named Kyle Katarn, and it was your job to help bring down the Empire with your kick ass ship. Further down the series, Kyle became a Jedi and helped create a game where you truly felt like a Jedi.
And then they came out with a game that's in my Top 5. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Taking place 4000 years before the movies, you played as virtually your own character, and creating your own place within the galaxy. Whether it was a dark legend or light one, you did it. The sequel was great too, expanding on the Time Line the game took place in. I should probably do a Let's Play or something for these games since they were so amazing.
But then at some point, the time for these games passed. I think it happened around the time Lego: Star Wars came out. The game made a lot of money, and was a safe bet for both kids and adults. Lucasarts played it safe for a while there, with the odd serious release. For example, the Force Unleashed. The Force Unleashed had you play as "Vader's Secret Apprentice". And the point of this game, was to take the force to its extreme level. How extreme? You bring down a Star Destroyer! A ship big enough to fit 50,000 people onboard. That's awesome. At least in concept. The idea and the promise was that you'd be strong enough in the force in the game to do this. But then reality kicked in and made that part a mini game. The final project was a hack and slash that had you powerful in the force for sure, but didn't have you reach that awesome level that you felt like you were going to reach. The game did well enough to get a sequel which did pretty awful. Gameplay became more God of War like, enemies were limited, and the story felt rushed. So that virtually failed, but Lucasarts came out with another big game. A sequel to a game I praised early. That game was The Old Republic.
When I heard about the game, I was downright pumped. I was ready to return to that time and become the greatest Jedi ever. But then I heard the terrible news, it was going to be an MMO. Understand, I don't hate MMOs. I played a bit of GW2 and WoW and had a lot of fun. I just don't like it for Star Wars, especially for the KOTOR universe. The games always created a personal story between the player and the universe, and that's not something that can be shared. You lose your uniqueness after that. But I gave it a try and played for a few months. I enjoyed it, but then I realized I was paying a lot of money for an experience I could be getting for pennies in WoW or for free in Guild Wars. So I stopped playing, and I wasn't the only one who did it. ToR has bombed financially and for a game that cost millions of dollars to make, that isn't good.
Lucasarts then decided to continue playing it safe. Lego games and the abomination, Star Wars Kinect. And would you guys believe that the Kinect game was their last game? Not some good Star Wars game, not some great adventure, not something completely new and interesting, just a Kinect game. And a bad one at that.
Something I should have mentioned earlier was, that Lucasarts didn't just make Star Wars games. They made a lot of interesting games in the past. Such as Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, and so many others. They were once known for their innovation and progress. But, they lost that initiative to do something great, and ended up at the bottom.
Like I said, it's sad. And it's sad for me to say this but, it's a miracle they lasted this long with their attitude. I'm not saying I'm glad people lost their jobs, far from it. I hope these people get jobs that let them use their talents in the future.
But now, Disney has the license for Star Wars games. They're responsible for a lot of great games, and only go for deals that are entertaining and profitable. Granted, we've seen a lot of cash in games before. But some of those games turned out pretty well. And you know a lot of these companies are going to want to get in line to deliver the next big Star Wars game right? We want it, and the public will deliver. Hell, imagine Blizzard making the next Star Wars game. I'd buy it.
Point is, feel bad for the people who lost their jobs, but feel optimistic for the future.
