I am somewhat knowledgeable in 40k lore. Mostly on niche subjects like "gods" and those of their ilk. For example, Nurgle is deeply in love with the Eldar god of healing, whom he saved from Slaanesh and keeps in a cage. He feeds her his new diseases and sees how it affects, seeing as she can quickly regenerate the damage caused. Also, warp storms are a direct result of Slaanesh's birth, meaning that the Tau were protected by Chaos. Also, positive emotions only make the warp less volatile and more predictable. Emotions are still emotions, but negative ones are felt much stronger than positive ones.
If there's anyone where who's knowledgeable about 40k and can help me reconcile the canon aspects of the setting with the story I have going so far, I could really use your help right now.

Happy to help.
And yeah, criticism is sometimes hard to handle; but if turned correctly you become a much better author. And I'm certain you will figure things out. Good luck.

Ah, I see. Well, I'll keep asking around about the setting, and I'll see if can either reconcile the story with the setting somehow, or possibly just keep going without it. Thanks for the pep talk Alex, although I do realize that I really do need more critiques if I'm going to develop as a writer. The fact that it happened in an IRC chat really didn't help things (hard to keep track of stuff), but I think I still needed the experience, unpleasant as it was.

I pretty much had the same problem a few years back on a story. Got over it after planning the story thoroughly, though. Got lots of patience.
You haven't read my bio, have you?
Anyway, I can tolerate clop in stories to a certain degree if the story isn't basically based upon it and the author builds the relationship between the characters (Crowley can be an exception). And there's just one clop author I truly despise; though only as an author and not as a person (mostly because I don't know said person in RL).
Yes indeed.

I guess so, but still...I just...really got clobbered badly in the critique, and knowing that the setting doesn't truly fit what I'm trying to do really does put a damper on things. Still I suppose you do have a point...I'll probably need some time to mull over it before making a final decision.
Also, completely off topic do you not like clop in general? Or just a particular clop author?

It's fanfiction - you can basically do whatever the hell you feel like with canon. Hell, look at Warhammer 40k: Courage and Honour and Friendship and Faith and fire: Equestria encounter; both stories break Canon at some places but they are both awesome nonetheless (Faith and Fire does so the most but it is set in an Alternate Universe of Warhammer40k, so there's that).
I've seen too many good authors give up stories or even quit the fanfic genre because of similar situations (if only the right authors would quit... *glares at a certain clop writer*). Trust me, even if your story break canon I can guarantee people following it will want you to continue. Your choice in the end, though.

It was a group of writers from my main internet watering hole, SpaceBattles Forum. They had set up an IRC channel for talking about fanfics that I began visiting recently.
According to them, there are several problems with the story. The first is that the Warp does not canonically function the way I had it function at the beginning of the story. There's no way for positive emotion to make the Warp calm. All emotion, no matter what it is, only stirs up the Warp, which would essentially make the space around Equestria the same as any other Warp Rift (i.e. a living hell). They also said that the Gods of Harmony would have been eaten by the Gods of Chaos a long time ago.
The second problem is that the Imperium almost certainly wouldn't develop a non-violent relationship with Equestria, and that in the end, the pony race would either be exterminated or enslaved, which is NOT how I wanted the story to go. And besides that, even if Equestria wasn't screwed over, there's basically no way for them to have any kind of substantial effect on the wider Galaxy (at least not in a timely fashion anyway). It's just one small race on one small planet in the middle of a very big and extremely hostile Galaxy.
If both these things are true then the whole premise of the story basically violates the canon of 40k. I could theoretically continue writing the story, but I would essentially be bending the setting to fit my story rather than making a story which fits with the characteristics of the setting.
I'm really bummed out about this because this is my first fanfic that I knew for a fact that I was going to stick with and continue writing.

Exactly who critiqued it?
It has been a writer block up to now, but I'm afraid I've got bigger problems.
I went to get the story critiqued but...they ended up completely demolishing the premise of the story. Things just don't work in 40k the way I had them work in this story, and the last thing I want to do is break canon just so that I can make my story work.
Sorry guys, but I think I'm probably going to pull the plug on this one.
