Pre-Season 3 Finale · 6:20pm
First off, This.
This blog post is exactly what kind of problems I have with the finale going into it. Exactly. The kind. Of problems. So at least now I know I'm not the only one thinking that Alicorn Twilight is a really, REALLY bad idea, but that still doesn't do anything to calm my nerves.
I mean, I might as well watch the episode. I've skipped about half of season one and season two, so with thirteen measly episodes in a season, I guess I should follow through. I guess I should watch this episode. But really, I don't want to. there are just so many problems that I can see with this concept and execution that I don't even want to know how they (the creators of the show) are going to deal with this. Sure, they've pulled off some pretty wacky stuff before, but I mean, ALICORN TWILIGHT???
Let's get one thing straight here. The basic concept of Alicorn Twilight is to turn a major major female character into an almighty goddess in one, twenty-two minute episode. This isn't going to work. Why?
#1) You are flipping the table on the fundamentals of the character.
From unicorn to a deity. That's how it is. You are taking a every day citizen with a little bit more magical power than normal and turning her into a god, all in one episode? What? That doesn't even make any sense, to take such a small time frame and slap on such an enormous concept and try and make it all work! It just won't happen! And this change will shake the foundations of how Twilight is written and portrayed as a character! She isn't the sweet magician that she was a mere week back, oh no, now, not only is she a goddess, but also royalty at the same time! That means that she will have the same responsibility as the normal princesses do, including controlling large masses around the planet and dealing with ALL of the problems that a ruler would have to face!
#2) The character is going from mortal to immortal in a matter of minutes.
It make take longer in the show, but to us fans, the change is literally a few minutes. You can't just go and do something like that, it's like making a really, really good story and just rushing the final chapter, which not only has a large amount of build-up but also contains the climax of the entire story arc! Granted, Alicorn Twilight has not been build-up or hyped in the episodes AT ALL, but that still doesn't prevent bronies from hearing about the newly crowned princess and talking about it as if the world's going to end. But I digress, this move is just plain stupid. It doesn't make any sense from any kind of stand point what so ever. Not from a marketing standpoint, not from a writing standpoint, not even from a presentation standpoint! So why, why in the holy name of god would you make such a enormous change in one single episode? Why not two episodes? Why not three? Why not take an entire season to prepare for this instead of dropping a very vague hint during the season beginning episode? Why? Why? WHY?
#3) No where to go plot wise after the deed had been done.
Ok, let me ask you this, how in the god's name is Twilight supposed to live her normal Ponyville life after being pronounced as a GODDESS and A MEMBER OF ROYALTY? How? How exactly? Because all I can see is that every single Ponyville citizen bowing at her hooves every time she walks to the market to get some food, or every time she visits Rarity, or Pinkie Pie, or any other of her friends that live in Ponyville! And then she'll probably get a huge amount of gifts arriving at her library, which, by the way, will probably be replaced from that tree to a castle that is befitting of a princess! Think of all the tributes that will be sent to her, just because she is now a goddess! Now that Twilight's an alicorn, there is no possible way that her life can go back to normal. This is a life changing event, one that at a writing standpoint, will force the story to take a direction that NO ONE wants to take.
And don't get me started on foreign relations.
#4) You're throwing a screwball at the fanbase.
You know how many stories there are that joke (key word) and poke fun at what would happen if Twilight was a goddess? You know how many stories there are that are loved by the community just because the expand on the concept of Twilight being an alicorn? Many. Many many many many many stories have used this concept. But this subject was made my the community. The fandom made this. But now things have changed. Alicorn Twilight is now CANON??? WHAT??? That was my first reaction when I heard the news. And it's terrible, because Alicorn Twilight was a joke, a fun concept to experiment and have fun with. It SHOULD have stayed a joke, and SHOULD have never became canon. Why? Well, you could say that at this point in time from when the fandom started to this last episode that Alicorn Twilight isn't even an ORIGINAL IDEA anymore, and now the writers of the show have picked it up? What?
It just doesn't make any sense.
None of it.
And not to say that this isn't an interesting direction the show has taken, no, but it's just so unreal and stupid that as a fan of the show, I DON'T want this to happen. In fact, I bet most of the MLP:FIM fanbase DOESN'T want this to happen either. No one wanted this to happen. No one wanted Twilight to do a complete 360 in character base, no one wanted the story of the show to stop at a screeching halt, no one wanted to see our favorite main character become an almighty being,
No one wanted this.
Especially me.
