> Pony History: The First Pegasus and Unicorn > by akroma > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Sky Flight > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Long ago before the magical land of Equestria, two races ruled the surface of the world. The Alicorns whose magic held sway over night and day and whose wings would guide the weather. And the Earthponies whose bodies were durable and wherever they would plant seeds, crops would grow. Despite how much they needed each other, they despised each other. In the eyes of the Alicorns, the earthponies were brute and unrefined. While the earthponies would call the Alicorns snobs and laugh at their haughtiness. Their relationship was fragile and threatened to collapse any moment. There had been numerous riots and deaths. Alicorns who threatened to wipe out villages and earthponies who poisoned entire shipments of food. There had been countless hostages and assassinations. Both sides were at the brink of war. However, there were some who sought peace instead of war. The leaders of both sides came together during the Everfree conventions and came to a compromise. The Alicorns, who the earth didn’t obey, decided to move to the sky. They created entire cities of clouds and cleared the land for the earthponies who could cultivate the lands on which formerly the Alicorns had built their castles. This way they created thousands of acres of new farmland, which made sure that the earthponies could cultivate enough food to feed everypony. Harmony had returned and peace reigned for many generations . Sky Flight’s day started as usual. Waking up in her enormous room in the north tower of the palace. With her parents in control of this part of the country she had some duties of her own to do. How late could it be? They haven't raised the sun yet. I'll better get up in time so I can have a calm breakfast before I have to work. She hovered the sheets off of her with her magic and stretched her wings, letting out a big yawn. As most young adults, she hated the morning, and everything confirmed that the morning hated her too. She wobbled to her private bathroom, filled the sink with water and splashed some of it in her face. She took her golden comb and brushed her hair. The comb looks very elegant and has a handle decorated with a beautiful ruby, it was her favorite, her parents told her to take good care of it. After she was done Sky put on a necklace in the same design as the comb with a few more ruby’s. They looked beautiful with her eyes and she admired herself in the mirror for a few moments before she left for the kitchen. She walked through the hallways from her room to the kitchen on the second floor of the palace. They are loaded with art of all sorts. She stopped by a new painting and enjoyed it’s vibrant colors. If it was one thing her parents loved more than war it was art. One of the few things she had in common with them. It’s too quiet in here, even at this hour. I think somepony has been firing some of the staff again. I hope they didn’t fire the cook, it would be a shame, I love his pancakes. She opened the doors to the dining room and heard her mother screaming from the kitchen. She sighed and walked past the table in the direction of her mother’s voice. A muffin flew inches from her face the moment she opened the door and splashed against the wall next to her. She looked unimpressed at the regal blue mare that stood in the middle of the chamber, pointed towards the chef and his sous-chef who were crawled in a corner out of fear. Both of them shielded their faces, the chef with his wings and the sous-chef with a levitating pan. “I asked for raspberry, not blueberry. Can’t you do anything good?!” “But We haven't recieved any from the village, Queen Soleil. The raspberry harvest wasn’t good this year.” "Mother please, your blood pressure." Sky regretted the moment she made eye contact. "You're never going to be able to rule this country if you're so softhearted, Sky." Sky gulped. "You need to get some more backbone" "But Mother--" “One more word from your lips and they’re not only fired, they will hang because of you!” Soleil stared her daughter down, hatred fueling her stare, breaking the will of her daughter immediatly. Yet she kept staring till the message was burned in Sky's mind: 'Never talk back, never question'. Anger welled up, yet got drowned by her helplessness. non the less, she wanted to help the cooks, yet she failed and got them almost hanged. Could she really be so cruel? She had seen her smile at the execution of criminals. But these were simply cooks. It can't. She can't. She wouldn't. Sky's train of thoughts stopped as she felt one of the cooks wrapping his wing around her. "It is ok, young lady, we're thankful that you stood up for us." Sky had tears streaming down her face. The other cook handed her a tissue, which she snorted in, clearing her nose. The cook brought her to the table and the other cook gave her a plate with pancakes. As Sky took a bite the tears broke loose, crying her frustration away. Acting tough, and indifferent isn't that hard every morning anew. Yet it is days like this which made her curse that she was born in nobility. She should be a Queen, yet she rules like a tyrant. Ruffle entered the dining room and frowned as he saw Sky's red eyes. They greeted each other. Sky tried to fake a smile, but her eyes betrayed her. Ruffle smiled. "How about we start with arts today?" Sky's eyes sparkled a little, and a few tears welled up, but she was able to surpress them. "That would be lovely."
