“I was glad about that because I wanted him and me to be together,” Velvet Aura said, reading her book out loud. She typically did this to practice her speech, as she had a speech impediment that she was working to get rid of. She was laying on a pillow, as comfy as a little unicorn pony like her could get. She had to keep her book afloat with her magic because whenever she’d leave it on the ground, her glasses would fall off as she tried to read. Velvet swiftly continued reading her book, “Miss Watson, she kept pecking at me, and it got tiresome and lonesome. By and by they fetched the nig-,”

Velvet was quickly cut off from reading by a loud thud, coming from the window of the room. Velvet looked at the window and dropped the book in fear. Her eyes shrunk, her ears lowered, and her body cowered. “Sorry!” a familiar voice cried out from outside the window, “I guess I should remember to use the door.” Velvet scowled with a grunt of frustration as she stood up. She slowly walked to the front door and opened it to see her pegasus friend, Zephyr Sky. Zephyr gave a nervous grin, “Heya, sorry about that! In Cloudsdale, our windows are just openings in the houses, so I’m used to just flying through them!”

Velvet rolled her eyes as she sighed, “It’s fine. What do you want?”

Zephyr looked at Velvet, offended by this, “What do I want? Can’t a filly come by and say hi to her friend without her assuming that she wants something?”

“Normally, yes,” responded Velvet, “But when it comes to you, you never come by unless you need help with something.”

“Oh come on,” Zephyr said, rolling her eyes, “Can you blame me?” Zephyr looked upon the observatory building that she was standing in front of, “This observatory is so isolated,” Zephyr looked back at Velvet, “Seriously, is this even considered part of Ponyville?”

“Technically, no. It’s outside Ponyville’s borders,” said Velvet, shaking her head, "I can’t have the light pollution of the town messing with the observations. And why do you care? You can fly here.”

“Yeah, but it’s still pretty far from my house. It’s a ten-minute flight,” Zephyr said.

“Well? What do you need?” asked Velvet, getting to the point.

Zephyr looked around the area in suspicion before leaning closer to Velvet and lifting her hoof to cover her mouth as she spoke, “Let’s talk about it inside.”

Velvet raised an eyebrow before she walked out of the way to allow Zephyr to enter.

Zephyr quickly grabbed a box that was sitting next to her and trotted inside. The box was purple with green tree-like vines painted on the sides. Velvet looked at the box curiously as Zephyr stopped at the center of the room and placed it down. Velvet closed the front door and walked toward Zephyr, staring at the box as she did, “I assume that’s what you need help with.”

“Yup!” responded Zephyr in enthusiasm.

“Well, what is it?” asked Velvet as she looked up at Zephyr.

“It’s a box!” Zephyr said.

Velvet gave Zephyr a disappointed look, “I know it’s a box, Zephyr. But what does it do? Or what do you need help with?”

Zephyr blushed, “Oh, right,” Zephyr’s face cleared up as she put on a smirk, “Prepare yourself, you may just lose your marbles.”

“Go on then,” Velvet said, patiently.

“Supposedly, in this box lies the very souls of King Sombra’s 104th Canterlot Advancement Squad,” Zephyr said, barely holding in excited giggles.

Velvet’s bored expression faded as her eyes widened, she carefully drew closer to Zephyr, a smile crawling across her face, “You don’t mean the squad that Princess Luna supposedly locked away inside a box during King Sombra’s invasion of Canterlot, do you?! You mean to tell me this is the one?!”

“That’s right…this is…Pandora’s Box!” Zephyr said.

“OH…MY…HOOFNESS!!! NO WAY!!!” Velvet gushed as she leaned her face close to the box.

“I knew you’d lose it,” Zephyr said, looking at Velvet’s excited expression with pride.

Velvet quickly stood up and looked at Zephyr, “This is incredible! How did you get your hooves on this?”

“Out of curiosity, I may have snooped around Prince Terrenus’ castle a bit,” Zephyr tittered, holding her hoof to her mouth.

Velvet looked at Zephyr with concern, “Zephyr! You know better than to get anywhere near Prince Terrenus’ castle! What if he had caught you?!”

Zephyr sniggered and waved her hoof, “Pft, it’s alright. He wasn’t even there. I don’t know where he goes, but I noticed he leaves for hours at a time some days. It’s all about waiting until that happens. While I was sneaking through his castle, I stumbled upon his old artifacts room. There, I found this box.”

“Still though, that was dangerous. You know what the Princesses said about getting near Prince Terrenus,” Velvet said, walking a bit closer to Zephyr.

“Yeah yeah yeah,” Zephyr placated, waving her hoof back and forth, “Enough about that. How about this box?”

“Well…what about it?” Velvet asked, unsure what Zephyr wanted from her.

“Well come on, I wanna open it. I thought maybe you may know how to,” Zephyr said, still bubbling with excitement.

“Are you sure that’s such a good idea? There’s a chance I could do it, sure. But do we even know what opening it will do? We shouldn’t mess with artifacts if we don’t know their purpose,” Velvet said, lifting a hoof.

“It’ll be fine. It’s just used to view and talk to them. It doesn’t do anything else,” simpered Zephyr, simply trying to get Velvet to open the box without regard for consequence.

“If you’re sure,” Velvet said as she looked up at the shelves of books that line the entirety of the observatory walls.

Velvet’s horn began to glow as she used her magic to pull many books out of the shelves. Books swirled around the room, all coming towards Velvet so she could read the titles. Those that she was not looking for were quickly sent back to their original spot on the shelves. “Aha!” Velvet exclaimed as she came across a book.

“What is it?” Zephyr asked, tilting her head.

“A while back, I actually meddled with an unbinding spell,” Velvet said as she began flipping through the pages, “I believe this spell could be the best thing for opening the box,” Velvet stopped flipping through the pages and looked at Zephyr, “Now are you sure that opening this is a good idea. This DOES possess troops from King Sombra’s army.”

“Yes, Velvet!” Zephyr said, nodding.

“Alright,” Velvet nodded as she looked down at the book.

Velvet’s horn glowed as she began casting the spell. The magic connected to the box, causing it to glow as well. Zephyr watched in anticipation, while Velvet waited cautiously. Finally, Velvet released her magical grasp on the box. Velvet and Zephyr watched as the box began spinning. The pair of ponies carefully backed away from the object as the top opened like a lid, revealing a bright shine coming from inside. The bright light prompted the ponies to shield their eyes with one of their front legs. The light was quick to fade as the box stopped spinning, allowing the ponies to put their legs back down. The pair looked at the box with curiosity. The box sat still, not moving an inch unlike before. “What happened?” Velvet asked, looking at the box.

Zephyr turned to Velvet with an unsure expression, “I was about to ask you the same thing.”

Velvet slowly began to approach the box. One hoof after another, very slowly. She peeked her head out, trying to look into the box. As soon as she caught sight of the bottom, loads of black mist began spewing out of the box. Velvet backed away as quickly as she could, gripping onto Zephyr as the two screamed. Black incorporeal beings began circling the room at high speeds as Velvet and Zephyr starred in fear as more and more of the entities spewed out. “I thought you said it’s just for talking to them!” Velvet scolded Zephyr.

“Oh, did I say I knew what it did? I may have been lying just to get you to open it,” Zephyr chuckled guiltily.

Velvet groaned in frustration at Zephyr’s carelessness, “So you had me open an ancient artifact without knowing what it does?”

“Yeah, but it was for research, or something,” Zephyr placated.

“Dang it, Zephyr!” Velvet yelled as she quickly ran towards the door.

“Ah! Wait for me!” Zephyr said urgently as she ran after Velvet.

Zephyr and Velvet found themselves outside and turned around to look at the observatory. The beings began to fly out of the windows and head towards Ponyville. “Those things are heading towards town,” Velvet said, watching in worry.

“Maybe that’s not a bad thing. There’s probably no evil intent with those…weird…ghost things,” Zephyr chuckled nervously, sweat dripping down her face.

Velvet turned to Zephyr with a scowl, “Are you kidding me?” Velvet shouted, “Those ghost things, or whatever, are ponies of King Sombra’s army! Of course there’s evil intent!”

“Oh, right,” said Zephyr, admitting Velvet is correct.

Velvet looked in the direction of Ponyville in worry before she turned back to Zephyr, “You shouldn’t have taken that box from Prince Terrenus’ castle!” Velvet rebuked, “If this ends up being a mess, YOU have to deal with it!”

“Why do you expect ME to deal with it? You’re the one who used magic to open it,” Zephyr responded.

“Because YOU told me that it was safe,” Velvet said as she pointed at Zephyr.

“Okay, that’s on me,” Zephyr admitted, “But it’s too soon to assume that there’s anything to worry about. We should go over to Ponyville and check it out before we assume something bad has happened.”

Velvet sighed, “Okay, you’re right. Let’s go to Ponyville and check it out.

The pair quickly found themselves in Ponyville, looking upon havoc as the black entities were all over the place, causing mayhem of all sorts as ponies fled and ran. “Nevermind, looks like this IS something to worry about,” Zephyr commented.

“Oh…my…Celestia!” Velvet said as she watched in worry.

Ponies run around, being chased by the entities. Some of the entities vandalize the town while others pick on the citizens. Zephyr turned to see Pinkie Pie running out of Sugarcube Corner, chasing an entity who has stolen a batch of cupcakes. “HEY! THOSE AREN’T FOR YOU!” Pinkie Pie shouted as she chased the being, “They’re for Rainbow Dash’s birthday!”

“Oh no, they’re taking the cupcakes too!” Zephyr exclaimed in worry.

Velvet turned to Zephyr with a scowl, “There are more important things here than cupcakes, Zephyr!”

Zephyr turned to Velvet, “Um…yeah, you’re right,” Zephyr said, tapping her chin with her hoof in thought, “Maybe we should get Hazel Bloom and Twilight.”

“Good idea, you find Hazel Bloom while I try to find Twilight,” Velvet said, turning away from Zephyr, looking around for any sign of Twilight Sparkle.

Zephyr does a salute on her forehead as she quickly flew up in the air, “Aye Aye, Captain!” Zephyr then began to fly in the direction of Hazel’s flower shop.

Velvet galloped around the town, trying to find any sign of Twilight Sparkle. Eventually, Velvet saw Twilight from a distance. Twilight was trying to fire magical blasts at the entities swarming around a building. Velvet quickly stopped in her place, "Twilight!” she shouted.

Twilight took her focus off the entities and turned to Velvet. A quick stroke of relief washed across her face as she quickly galloped towards Velvet, stopping in front of her, “Velvet! What is going on around here?”

“Zephyr found a strange box at Prince Terrenus’ Castle and I opened it for her. It released all these…things,” Velvet said as she looked around at the entities in worry.
“Prince Terrenus’ Castle?! Why was she over there? And WHY did you open it?” Twilight shouts, giving a hint of disappointment in Velvet’s actions.

Velvet turned to Twilight, “Zephyr told me it was safe. And honestly, it’s on me that I believed her.”

“Well, what should we do?” Twilight asked, lifting an eyebrow.

Velvet placed a hoof on her chin as she thought for a moment. An idea popped into her head as she looked at Twilight with a determined expression, “I think I remember reading an old book that contained a spell on how to capture incorporeal entities.”

“Really?” Twilight said, smiling in admiration, “That’s incredible. Do you think you can cast it?”

“No, I didn’t memorize the spell,” Velvet said, “I didn’t think I would ever have use for it. Looks like that was wrong,” Velvet said, rolling her eyes at her lack of foresight. She looked at Twilight with a determined look, “I told Zephyr to get Hazel Bloom. Meet with them and try to keep these things from causing too much more trouble in Ponyville. I’m gonna head back to the observatory and find that book.”

Twilight nodded, “Alright,” she quickly galloped away, heading towards Hazel Bloom’s flower shop.

Velvet Aura began galloping towards her observatory, intent on cleaning up this mess that she started.

Zephyr Sky arrived at Hazel Bloom’s flower shop. The flower shop doubled as a house and shop for Hazel Bloom. Zephyr was quick to land and knock on the front door, “Hazel! Hazel Bloom!” Zephyr shouted, trying to get Hazel’s attention.

The door opened slightly, allowing Hazel Bloom, an earth pony mare, to peek her eye through. With her typical deadpan expression, Hazel opened the door completely, revealing the entirety of her body, “Zephyr,” Hazel Bloom said in a monotone voice, “Do you need something? I’m closed on Sundays.”

“I-I’m not here for flowers, Hazel,” Zephyr said in haste, “Something crazy is going on and we need your help.”

Hazel leaned to the side, peeking around Zephyr and noticing the havoc being caused by the black spirits, “Oh my,” Hazel said as she looked back at Zephyr, “Let me guess. You got careless and Velvet, for some reason, trusted you?”

Zephyr rolled her eyes to the back of her head in guilt, “Um…more or less. Let’s not get into specifics. Point is, we need your help with this.”

Hazel sighed as she nodded, “It would seem that way,” the pony walked out of her shop, closing the door behind her.

Twilight, coming from quite a distance away, galloped towards Zephyr and Hazel. Zephyr and Hazel quickly put their attention toward Twilight. "Twilight!" Zephyr said, running up to and stopping in front of the unicorn mare, "Did you talk to Velvet?"

"I did," Twilight responded, looking around at the mayhem the entities are causing, "She said she's going to the observatory to find a spell that can reverse this," Twilight turned back to the 2 mares, "Can you two use your Magic to keep these spirits at bay?"

Hazel Bloom and Zephyr Sky nod in unison. "We'll do our best," Zephyr said enthusiastically, quickly dashing into the air in flight.

"Are we sure that using my magic is a good idea? You know it causes property damage?" Hazel Bloom said, still with a deadpan expression and tone, but conveying a more gentle emotion.

"Yes, I know. It's alright. At a time like this, it's needed," Twilight said as she smiled at the earth pony.

Hazel Bloom curved a small smile as she lifted one of her front hooves. She quickly smashed it into the ground, which prompted a large vine to sprout from the ground in front of her. The vine is roughly two meters in diameter and stretches ten meters into the air. The vine stretches and whacks many of the entities in one swoop. The entities were dazed for a moment before they snapped out of it and turned to Hazel in anger. They headed in Hazel’s direction in a fit of fury. Twilight nodded in approval, “Excellent!” she turned to Zephyr, “Zephyr! You know what to do!”

“I’m on it,” Zephyr responded as she spread her wings as far apart as she could. As she began to descend from no longer flapping her wings, her wings began to glow white. With a loud grunt, Zephyr flapped her wings forward, causing a blade of magic shaped like a wing to be fired. The beam of magic smashed into the entities, knocking them out of their trajectory.

Twilight scowled in focus as she began to charge up a magical attack. A purple ball of magic appeared at the tip of Twilight’s horn. She took the opportunity to fire it at the entities. The ball made its way to the entities, bursting on contact with them and stunning them further. Twilight smiled, “Perfect! They’re stunned. Now, if we can keep doing that for the rest of-” Twilight got cut off mid-sentence when the entities shook themselves out of it and zoomed away, continuing to cause chaos. Twilight and Zephyr went wide-eyed in disbelief. “Wh-What?!” Twilight uttered in shock, “But…that spell should have kept them still for much longer!”

Zephyr turned to Twilight with a concerned look, “Maybe for any ol’ pony. But these things are something like ghosts.”

Twilight looked to the ground, getting deep in thought, “You’re right. That spell won’t work on them,” Twilight turned to the observatory in the far distance, “We just have to hope that Velvet will be able to find that book soon.”

Velvet had finally reached the Observatory and quickly got to searching for the book. Velvet quickly littered the floor with books as she used her magic to grab one after another and inspect them. As she read a book that wasn’t the one, she would quickly discard it by throwing it on the floor as she read the next. “Come on! Where is it?” Velvet said in urgency, “Ugh! It should have been on that shelf. Or maybe it should be. AGH!!” Velvet cried out in frustration as she continued looking. Velvet’s eyes finally lit up as she pulled out a book. She looked upon the book with a smile, “This isn’t the one. But…but it could work!”

Twilight, Hazel, and Zephyr scurried around Ponyville, trying to subdue the entities. However, the ponies were unsuccessful in their attempts. “It’s hopeless! We can’t do anything to slow them down,” Zephyr commented as she descended to the ground from flight.

“We just have to hope that Velvet can get that book,” Twilight said as she looked at the surrounding chaos.

Right on queue, Velvet appeared, running towards the three mares. Hazel was quick to notice the running unicorn and immediately pointed it out, “There she is.”

Twilight and Zephyr turned in the direction that Hazel pointed out. Immediately, their eyes lit up in joy, seeing the pony with a book. “Velvet!” Twilight cried out, “Is that the book?”

Velvet stopped in front of the group and quickly caught her breath before she looked at the mares to speak, “No, it’s not.”

Zephyr put on an expression of disbelief, “WHAT?!?!”

Velvet was quick to raise her hoof, trying to calm the pegasus pony, “It’s alright. I actually found something even better!”

“Well, what is it?” Twilight asked in haste.

Velvet smiled as she presented Pandora’s box, which she was previously hiding from the others. Velvet dropped the box to the ground before she opened the book, “This book actually contains information on this very box!”

The group went wide-eyed at this information. “You really found this book in your library?” Hazel asked as she stepped forward.

Velvet nodded, “That’s correct,” she looked down at the book, “This book contains the precise information on how to cast a spell to seal every single one of those things back into the box.”

“Deus ex machina aside, how do you cast it?” Zephyr asked as she tilted her head.

Velvet looked up at her friends nervously, “Well…that’s just it. It requires Alicorn magic.”

“Alicorn magic? But none of us possess alicorn magic!” Twilight stammered.

“Aw, we’re screwed then!” Zephyr said, collapsing to the ground.

“That’s what I thought at first,” Velvet said as she flipped through the book and turned it over to show the other ponies, “According to the book, there’s a way we can perform the spell without alicorn magic.”

Twilight, Hazel, and Zephyr looked closely at the book. “And what is that?” Hazel asked.

The picture of the book shows an earth pony, pegasus, and unicorn channeling their magic into a fourth pony, who is channeling magic into a box. “If we channel the magic from each type of pony into another, then they can perform the spell. However, it requires all the entities to be in one place, otherwise, it won’t work.”

Twilight smiled, “That’s perfect! Hazel will be our earth pony, Zephyr can be our pegasus, and I can be the unicorn. Which leaves you to be the conduit for the magic.”

“Awesome! So we’ll be able to clear this mess after all,” Zephyr said as she backflipped in excitement.

“But just as the book says, we’re going to have to gather the entities together in one place,” Hazel said as she looked at the surrounding entities.

“That shouldn’t be a problem,” Twilight said, turning to Hazel, “We were able to round them up for a while before they kept escaping because we had nowhere to put them. Now we have a goal. We’ll just have to keep them still long enough for us to cast the spell.”

“So that begs the question now. How do we cast it?” Zephyr asked, lifting a hoof up.

Velvet took another look at the book, “You have to charge your magic and direct it towards whoever will be the conduit. The spell should do the rest.”

“Then we haven’t a moment to lose. Hurry, everypony. Let’s get started rounding them up,” Twilight said, turning to where most of the entities are.

“I’ll stay here and prepare everything. Gather them over the box and we’ll start as soon as possible,” Velvet said, placing the book on the ground, open to the page of the spell.

Twilight, Hazel, and Zephyr ran away without a word, intent on gathering up the entities invading Ponyville. Twilight devised a plan. Hazel would create a large net made from plants, coated with Twilight’s magic. With that next, they would run around Ponyville, scooping up the entities by using Zephyr’s magical wing beams to push the entities in and keep them from escaping. Before too long, the group had easily collected every single entity. As the group ran towards Velvet, she held the box open, ready to cast the spell. “Alright everypony,” Velvet said, “We have to be quick about this!”

Twilight, Zephyr, and Hazel quickly got into formation. Twilight let go of the net, which allowed the entities to phase through. “Now, everypony! Lend me your magic!” Velvet shouted. On queue, Hazel kneeled, channeling her earth pony magic into her hooves. Twilight raised her neck high, channeling her unicorn magic into her horn. Zephyr spread her legs and raised her back into the air, channeling her pegasus magic into them. Simultaneously, three beams of magic sparked from each of the 3 ponies and began flowing into Velvet’s horn. The magic coming from the hooves of Hazel was Blue, the magic from Twilight was Red, and the magic coming from Zephyr was Yellow. Together, the magic turns into a color of white as Velvet begins casting the spell. A pair of translucent pegasus wings appeared on Velvet’s back as the white beam of magic shot toward the fleeing entities.

In an instant, the magic began swirling around each of the entities, pulling them closer and closer together in the now firming whirlpool. Zephyr, Hazel, Twilight, and Velvet watched the event in awe and shock. The whirlpool swirled and swirled, aiming into Pandora’s Box. One by one, the entities began to be pulled into the box. Though they tried to escape, it was no use as the spell was unstoppable once cast. As soon as the last of the entities was consumed by the box, it closed itself, locking shut. The magic from the ponies dispersed and Velvet’s new wings disappeared.

The air fell silent as the ponies were unsure of what to think about the spell that transpired. Ponies of Ponyville began to come out of hiding and cheered on the group. Zephyr was the first to speak after smiling, “We did it!”

Twilight followed, smiling as the four were victorious, “The spell worked!”

“I can’t believe it was actually that easy,” Hazel commented, giving a small smile.

Twilight approached Velvet, “Velvet! Your back…you had wings!”

Velvet turned to Twilight in confusion, “What? I had wings?”

“Yeah!” Zephyr said, coming close to the two mares, “It was like you were an alicorn!”

“Really? I didn’t notice,” Velvet said, looking at her back.

“You said that the spell could only be activated by alicorn magic. An alicorn is really just an earth pony, pegasus, and unicorn combined. The spell must have taken the magic from each of us and put it in you, turning you into an alicorn. And that allowed you to complete the spell,” Twilight said, seemingly figuring out exactly how the spell works on the fly, as if it was some case of bad writing or something.

Velvet smiled, “You’re right!”

Zephyr looked down at Pandora’s Box, “So uh…what should we do with this box?”

Twilight used her magic to pick the box up, “I think we should put it in the care of somepony who knows what to do with it. I’ll send it to Princess Celestia when I get the chance. An ancient artifact like this has no business being in the hooves of anypony but her.”

“I agree,” Velvet nodded. Velvet proceeded to turn to Zephyr, “Zephyr Sky!”

Zephyr blushed, “Um….y-yes?”

“I think you owe an apology to the ponies of Ponyville,” Velvet said, backed by the scowling ponies of the town.

“Hey, it wasn’t just me. You were the one who opened the box!” Zephyr said as she pointed her hoof at Velvet.

Velvet nodded, “Yes, I am to blame too. And I will apologize,” Velvet turned around to face the ponies of the town. She bowed her head down and closed her eyes, “I am very sorry, everypony.”

Zephyr rolled her eyes, “Fine. I’m sorry too, everypony.”
