> A Grand Night Out > by PonyPixel > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- > The Invitation > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- A few weeks ago, Gilda was at her bakery making more pastries as she was trying to step out of her comfort zone. She placed the tray on the counter and looked around for the frosting. "Okay, now where is it?" She began to look under the counter looking for the frosting just as Greta walked in. "Looking for something?" Greta asked. This surprise caused Gilda to bang her head on the bottom of the counter. When she stood up and looked towards her friend while rubbing the small bruise on her head. "Oh, so sorry. You okay?" "That’s okay, I’m fine. It's just a small bruise,” she said to her friend. “So, what’d you say?” “I'm saying that you are looking for something?” “Yeah, I was looking for that frosting Pinkie gave to me before. I'm trying out different kinds of pastries. She said I should try and expand my variety of it." "That sounds good to me. I’ll help you find that." “Thanks.” Greta then helped Gilda look around for the frosting. And just as they found it, the mail griffon, Gabby, burst into the building. This startled the two other griffons, nearly causing them to knock the pastries onto the floor. "Whoops, sorry," the mail griffon apologized. She held her talons together in a bit of guilt. "That’s okay. What all the excitement, Gabby?" Gilda questioned. "It's the Grand Galloping Gala. It starting tonight!" "Grand Galloping Gala?" Greta questioned. "Oh, I remember that," Gilda said. She looked around until she found a loose floorboard. She pulled it up to reveal two golden tickets. "Gabby and I got these a long time ago." "Ah, now I remember." "Still can't believe that ponies make this such a big fuss." One Month Earlier Gilda was just minding her own business, just taking some time to herself as she made through another day in Griffonstone. She looked around at the sky to see Gabby flying towards her at high speed. "Gilda!" the mail griffon cried. Gabby nearly crashed landed as she flew up to her friend. "Gabby. Why were you flying like that?" Gilda questioned. "Take a look at this!" Gilda was shown two tickets which she couldn’t help but shove in Gilda’s face. “I can’t help myself.” She then got one of the golden tickets. “What are these tickets even for?” “The Grand Galloping Gala!” “...What’s that?” “It’s an event that’s happening in Canterlot. Ponies dress up fancy and talk with each other at the castle and……Spike managed to get us each a ticket.” “Seriously? When does it start?” “About a month. Spike says there are a couple of things that we need before we go. We both need dresses.” “Okay…… And where are we supposed to get those?” “Rarity’s of course.” “Who is she?” “A friend of Spike’s. We did have a bit of a rough start, but we’re good friends now. We can go to her now.” “Okay. Just let me explain to Greta what we’re doing, and then we can go. I’ll be right back.” Gilda knew this was one of those times where Gabby could barely contain her excitement. Greta understood what was going on and allowed Gilda to leave with Gabby to make their preparations. After a long flight, the two griffons had made it to Canterlot. They were both panting as they could catch their breath. “Okay, this better be worth it,” Gilda said. “And by the way, we’re taking the train back home for now on.” “Right,” Gabby agreed. She let out a tired sigh before entering Canterlot Carousel. Inside, they found a lot of ponies who were all trying to get dresses and/or suits for the gala. “Why are they getting them now? You said this is a month away.” “Maybe they just wanna prepare, that’s all.” The two griffons would’ve used their wings to get above the crowd, but they were already tired from their flight. “This worked out way better in my head.” “Girls!” cried a voice. The two griffons were suddenly levitated to the second floor of the building. Sassy Saddles placed them beside her with a familiar purple. “There you are.” “Hi Spike,” Gabby said happily. The dragon and griffon both shared a hug as Sassy Saddles introduced herself to Gilda. “Nice to meet you,” the unicorn said to the visiting griffon. “I’m Sassy Saddles, and I help run this Carousel.” “Thought so,” Gilda said. “Gabby explained a couple of things while on the way here.” “So, did you explain what color dress you wanted?” “Not really. Green maybe.” “Hmm, I’ll see what I can do. Probably will have to check with Rarity.” “Speaking of Rarity, where is she by the way?” Gabby asked. “Oh, she’s helping Thorax with some dance lessons,” Spike explained. “Thorax?” the griffons questioned both sounding confused. “He’s in the other room.” Spike led the two guests from Griffonstone into a different room. Some hoof-steps and music could be heard playing. Opening the door, the three found the king of the changelings dancing with Rarity. There was a record playing the music and there was also a dance mat for those who were interested in learning dancing. “You’re doing very well, Thorax,” the mare said to the nervous king. “Hehehe……Thanks.” He then suddenly noticed Spike and the griffons looking at them practicing. Feeling nervous, Thorax started fumbling over his own steps and fell to the ground, much to Rarity’s surprise. “Oh my! Are you alright?” she asked, feeling concerned for him. “I’m fine.” Gilda walked over to help the changeling king up. “What are you even doing here?” Gilda asked. “I’m practicing dancing, so Ember and I will have a good time at the gala,” Thorax explained. “We thought it was a good idea,” Spike said. He walked over to the record playing and got it to stop. “So, how are you and Ember doing?” Gilda asked. “Really great,” Thorax explained. “In fact, there’s a reason why I wanted to learn dancing for the gala. I want Ember and me to have our first kiss.” “Wow, that sounds so romantic,” Gabby cooed. “I know. That’s why I want to get this right.” “You’re doing very well,” Rarity commented. “Do you want us to continue or do you want me to finish your tuxedo?” “I think I can wait while the tux is being made.” “Great. Now, I’m guessing there’s a reason why you two are here.” Rarity looked over to Gilda and Gabby. The fashionista quickly got her glasses and a tape measure and started getting the sizes of the griffons. “So, is Griffonstone doing better?” Gabby and Gilda looked at each other before the latter spoke. “We’re doing as well as a snail in a salt mine,” Gilda noted. “Oh, I see.” Spike could feel this was getting a little awkward. “How about we talk about something relating to the gala?” he suggested. “Sure,” Gabby said. “Who else is going?” “Well, aside from Thorax and Ember, but also Queen Novo, Princess Skystar, Prince Rutherford, Shining Armor, Cadence.” “Any creature we know?” Gilda asked. “Not many, aside from the first few I mentioned.” “Great.” “It’s always good to make new friends,” Gabby said. “I’ve never really met this Skystar. What’s she like?” “Like a hippogriff version of Pinkie Pie. You’ll get along just great.” “Indeed,” Rarity said. “Now, what color would you want your dresses?” “Pink,” Gabby answered. “Green,” Gilda shrugged. “Right,” Rarity said. She got a pencil and notepad and wrote down what they requested. “Now, I’m going to be very busy so don't ask for too much." "Okay," Gabby said, "Surprise us then." The mare nodded before going over to her shelves of sewing materials. "Now what?" Gilda asked. "You may come over to test the dresses out," Rarity said. "If you did that, I would have an easier time making it." "That's how my suit is nearly ready," Thorax said. "Plus, the dance lessons." "Right," Gilda said. "Well, we live pretty far, so expect too many visits." "We will have visit due to meetings," Thorax said. Gilda remembered that she was an ambassador now. "Right. Well... I think Gabby and I should get back." "Yeah, I've still got some mail to deliver," Gabby said. "We'll you again sometime," Spike said. "Yeah, we'll see you at the gala," Gabby said. She waved goodbye to her friends as she left with Gilda so they could get to the station for a ride home. As they were waiting for their train, Thorax walked up to them with a dance mat rolled up on his back. “Hey, girls,” he said. “Sup?” Gilda asked. “Oh, nothing. Just making some small talk while we wait.” “Makes sense.” “So, how are you and Ember doing?” Gabby asked. “What’s she like?” “Well, she’s really fierce. She has a bit of a problem when it comes to her emotions, but I feel like she’s getting better. I hope she enjoys the dress Rarity is making for her.” “I’m sure she’ll love it.” “Do you even know who she is?” Gilda asked. Gabby admittedly gave a shrug. “Well, I’m guessing that she’ll be interesting to meet her.” “Most likely,” Thorax remarked. “Anyways, I hope that Girffonstone gets better.” Eventually, they could see the next train come into the station. Gabby and Gilda got on board before waving goodbye to Thorax before they headed home. “And so one month later, here we are,” Gilda explained. “And now it’s tonight,” Gabby cooed. “I kind of wish I could bring you.” “It’ll be fine,” Greta said. “Besides, I promised the kids I teach them some poker skills.” “Alright then.” “Let me know how it goes when you get back.” “Can do,” Gabby responded. “Come on Gilda! We’ll be late.” The two griffons left the messy village and headed to the station. “Okay, I hope that we have enough time to get out dresses from Rarity.” “Get a hold of yourself,” Gilda said. “If we make to the station before the train leaves, we’ll be on time and we don’t have to run around like a headless chicken.” It didn’t take long for them to get to the station, where the train had just arrived. The two got on board and road off to Canterlot. “What do you think we’re going to see? What do you think that Skystar will be like?” “I’ve met Novo before so I think Skystar might be a bit spoiled. Depending on her age. But I guess she could always be spoiled.” “Hopefully Novo can keep her in check.” The two griffons sat back as they knew this trip was going to take a while. It did, Gabby even fell asleep for a little bit. While she was out, Gilda looked out the window and kept wondering what the night would be like. Then, she saw the city. Gilda nudged her friend awake as the train started coming to a stop. Once the griffons got off the train, they went straight towards Canterlot Carousel. Rarity was just about to leave when she saw the griffons. “Girls, there you are,” the mare gasped. “I didn’t think you would show up.” “You’re not closed are you?” Gabby asked. “Not quite. I was just about to go to the gala until you showed up. Come inside, let me show you to your dresses.” Rarity led the griffons back inside the store and took them to the back room. There, two dresses were on some mannequins. One of the dresses was ruby pink around the chest area while the skirt had different shades of pink that got lighter the closer it got to the bottoms. The other dress was mostly green with a golden yellow pattern of diamonds. “Wow! Those look so beautiful!” “Thank you, Gabby. You and Gilda may try them on right now.” Gabby didn’t hesitate and grabbed her dress before going to one of the change rooms. Gilda did the same, though she was a little bit slower. After a few minutes, the griffons walked out in their new dresses. “Wow, these look better when we’re wearing them!” Gabby gazed in the mirror that was set up so customers could see how they looked in the dresses. Gilda had to admit, she did look good in green. “I’m glad you’re liking this,” Rarity said. The griffons looked towards the mare, who was now in a violet dress that had a diamond pattern on it. “Rarity, that looks amazing!” “Thank you, Gabby. Now, we better get going. We don’t want to miss the gala.” Rarity soon led the way towards Canterlot castle. It seemed to be getting bigger and bigger as they approached it. Gilda could feel some butterflies in her stomach. “Oh, you’re going to love it. So many different creatures for you to meet.” “Yeah, and practically all of them having better track records than me.,” Gilda said to herself. Soon, they could see the guards standing outside. Rarity showed her ticket and the griffon proceed to do the same. “Very well,” one of the guards said. “Enjoy your evening ladies.” The doors opened up and the three fancy-dressed girls walked inside. The halls themselves were incredibly clean and even had some red carpet rolled. “Man, I didn’t know it would be this fancy,” Gabby commented. “This is only for looks,” Rarity stated. “The real beauty is in here.” Rarity opened a set of doors, showing the main hall. There, tons of ponies were dressed up in suits and dresses, not to mention there were also a couple of other creatures in there. “Welcome to the Grand Galloping Gala.” > Griffon at the Gala > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gilda and Gabby looked around. The gala was the most beautiful thing they’ve ever seen. Though, since they lived in Griffonstone, that wasn’t such a high bar. They followed Rarity until they came across a nicely dressed dragon. “Hi, girls,” Spike replied. “Spike!” Gabby cheered. The griffon and dragon both shared a hug before Gabby started talking. “This is so amazing. I can’t believe I’m actually here.” “I know, it’s pretty amazing. You want me to show you around?” Gabby nodded as Gilda looked towards Rarity. “Is something wrong, Gilda?” the mare asked. “Oh, nothing. It’s just that I have no idea how to act around ponies that are this fancy,” Gilda replied. “Oh, don’t worry dear. I’ll be by your side for the night.” The griffon smiled. This did help the griffon feel better as they followed Spike through the room. “The ambassadors should be over here,” Spike said. “This is also their first time here.” “How are they then?” “I think it’ll be best if you see them for yourselves.” They walked past a couple of ponies until they found a group of very different creatures. There was Dragon Lord Ember, Queen Novo, Prince Rutherford, and King Thorax. “Hey guys,” Spike said. “Spike,” Thorax exclaimed. The dragon and changeling shook each other’s appendages as the king could see the griffons he met a month ago. “Hey, Gilda. How are you doing so far?” “Meh,” Gilda responded. “We’ve only been here for about a minute. So, yeah.” “Right then...” Thorax felt a little embarrassed and looked towards Gabby. “So, um... Gabby,… was it?” “Yep, that’s me,” the other griffon responded. She looked over to the rest of the ambassadors and seemed to be excited. She decided to take a good look at their wardrobes. She had already seen the suit that Thorax was wearing and Rutherford didn’t have anything aside from a few extra rings on his horns. Queen Novo wore a deep blue dress that completely covered her legs from anyone’s view while Ember’s was a bit fancier. She wore a violet dress that had a sweetheart top and a ballgown skirt. She also wore some match gloves and she didn’t seem to be enjoying herself. “You look so great!” Gabby commented. “Thank you,” Novo commented. “I really have to thank Rarity for this.” “Oh, it was nothing really,” Rarity said. “I just wish I could’ve done more work on it. I had so many dresses to work on.” “I don’t blame you. Just look at all of these ponies here.” Most of the mares in the crowd had very lovely looking dresses that had Rarity’s style. “I understand having to sacrifice quality over quantity. This is still a nice dress.” “Yeah, good for you,” Ember grumbled. She tried walking away, having to hold up her dress just not to trip. “So, Novo,” Thorax said, “You said you had a daughter, right?” “Skystar? Yes,” the hippogriff replied. “Now, where did she go?” Novo looked around but her daughter seemed to have wandered off. “Okay, so how old is Skystar?” Gilda asked. “She’s about in her teenage years,” Spike explained. “She’s kind of like...?” “Gilda!” called a voice. The Griffonstone ambassador looked around until she saw a rainbow maned pegasus wearing a red dress with lightning patterns on it. “Dash?” the griffon said in shock when she turned to see her pony friend come by. “Hey, G,” Rainbow replied. “Nice dress you have. Did Rarity make it for you?” “Of course, darling,” the fashionista said. Dash simply rolled her eyes and focused on her griffon friend. “So, liking the looks of this place, huh?” “It’s good so far,” Gilda said. “Not entirely sure what I’m going to do here.” “Oh, I could show you to the Wonderbolts.” Gilda looked over to Gabby who didn’t seem to mind the two of them splitting up. “Yeah, you go ahead and do your thing. I wanna see what’s around here too,” she said. “Fine by me,” Gilda responded. Gilda soon walked away with Rainbow Dash while Gabby joined with the ambassadors. The pegasus and griffon walked with Rarity and Spike over to the Wonderbolts. Like Dash, they were all nicely dressed, which confused her. “Okay, I thought you guys wore blue jumpsuits,” Gilda spoke. “Well, they usually do,” Dash said, “But since this is the first time we’re having creatures from other kingdoms here, Twilight thought they should look their best. Still, our suits are in the back if they want to see a show.” “I really outdid myself here,” Rarity said. The Wonderbolts had suits and dresses that had designs that really went well with them. Like Spitfire’s dress having a firey theme. “So, what’s life like as a Wonderbolt?” Gilda asked Rainbow Dash. “It’s pretty sweet,” Dash answered. “Flying around at high speeds and pretty much everything I’ve dreamed of.” “Good for you. So, where’s Twilight? Shouldn’t she be around here?” “She said she was talking to other guests,” Spike said. “She said she was trying to expand the type of creatures that can be enrolled at the School of Friendship.” Spike looked around until he saw the alicorn princess talking to two similar-looking creatures dressed in kimonos. One was as tall as Twilight, while the other was around Celestia’s height. They both had long tails that had mane at the tip of them and they had curly horns that split at the top. “What are those?” Gilda questioned. “Kirins,” he answered. “Fluttershy and Applejack said there were plenty of them that could be enrolled.” “I see.” Spike flew over to see how the conversation was going. “And so I think it would be good for them to interact with other creatures,” Twilight said finishing her explanation. “Hmm,” the taller Kirin said. “It would be a smart idea since we’ve been silent for so long.” “You’re telling me,” the shorter Kirin said. Just then, Spike landed beside the princess. “Twilight, how’s the planning going?” he asked. “Very well,” the taller Kirin said. Before she could continue, they could see Gilda walking over to them. “Hi there!” the smaller Kirin said. She got a little closer than the griffon would be comfortable. “Take it easy, Autumn,” the taller Kirin said. “Who are you?” Gilda asked, stepping back a bit. “My name is Rain Shine,” the taller Kirin explained, “And this is Autumn Blaze.” The smaller kirin held out her hoof short Gilda to shake. They shook hooves and talons though, at the speed that they did it, Gilda thought her arm was going to fall off. Thankfully Spike and Twilight made them stop before something bad could happen. “Right then,” Twilight said, “I see you’ve met the ambassador of Griffonstone, Gilda.” “It’s nice to meet you,” Rain Shine said to the griffon. “Yeah... Same to you,” Gilda replied. “So... I know that this is my first time meeting a Kirin, and I wanna ask you what they do for a living?” “Well, if we lose our tempers we catch fire,” Autumn Blaze explained. “That’s when we turn into Niriks.” “Wait. That’s a thing?” “Oh, yeah,” Spike confirmed. “But we have that under control now,” Rain Shine remarked. “The Stream of Silence was a little extreme.” “Steam of Silence?” Gilda asked. “Show I know more about this?” “Eh, it’s not important anymore,” Autumn Blaze shrugged. “Anyways, tell us about you. What’s Griffonstone like?” Gilda stood quiet for a minute. This was getting too awkward enough. “I... Don’t want to talk about that,” she responded. “Um... I’m going to find something to drink.” The griffon quickly flew off, leaving Twilight and Spike worried and the kirin’s confused. “I want to know more,” Rain Shine said, “But I feel like I would make things worse.” "Right," Spike said. "I can show you where the ambassadors of the other kingdoms are at." "That would be great." Spike led the kirins to another part of the gala while Twilight felt a little worried about Gilda. The griffon wandered off to another part of the castle and sighed. She would do anything than being reminded of her home. "Why did all that responsibility have to be on me?" she muttered sadly. "Gilda?" asked a voice. The griffon looked up and could see a yellow and pink pegasus looking down at her. "Fluttershy?" Gilda questioned quietly. "I didn't think I would see you here." "Oh yeah. I'd probably just be rolling in the dumpster fire which is my home." "So… you want to talk?" Gilda sighed. "Sure. I haven't got anything better to do." The mare and griffon walked over to the dessert table where Fluttershy got them both slices of cake. "It's very nice to see you again." "Even after deafening you because you bumped into me?" "It was a little uncalled for..." Fluttershy was interrupted by an upset sigh from the griffon. "But that doesn't mean you're unforgivable. We've all made mistakes in the past, but what's important is that we can forgive ourselves." "Then why does that feel so hard for me?" "Guilt can be harder for some rather than others," said a voice. Fluttershy and Gilda looked behind to see nicely dressed draconequus, which startled the latter. "You make a fair point, Discord," Fluttershy commented. "...He's with you?" Gilda questioned. "I know I'm a little surprising to see at first," Discord spoke, "But once you get to know me, I'm the life of a party." "R... Right. So, what were you saying about guilt?" "A month ago, I decided to have a little fun at Twilight's school. Long story short, there were living painting, some quicksand and it wasn't something I would feel good about doing again." "So, how'd you get over it?" "Some of the students were interested in this game called Ogres and Oubliettes, great game when you have me put a spin on it. Anyways, I had them start a real-life version of the game and even though we had a bit of a rough time, they were willing to forgive me because I was trying to make things better. I then tried to get to know a couple of the other students and... Well..." "Like Ogres and Oubliettes," Fluttershy spoke, "It could've gone better, but the students were still willing to get to know Discord more. It's better to try again rather than just give up on yourself." Gilda thought about what they said. Then she remembers that Twilight had plans to rebuild Griffonstone. "That's Flutters," she said, "I needed this." Discord smiled as he picked up one of the plates of cake slices and snapped himself, Fluttershy, and Gilda some glasses of chocolate milk. As they enjoy their drink and cake, Fluttershy could see a red dragon in the crowd of creatures. He had orange spines, yellow eyes, and his wings had a small hole in them. He wore a black suit that had a white undershirt and a blue bowtie. "You know, Gilda," Fluttershy said, "I think I know someone who's been in your position." The griffon was curious and looked over to the dragon Fluttershy was pointing to. "Who's that?" "That's Garble. He and you were both bullies once, but just like you, he's wanting to get better. You two would probably get along great with each other." "Hmm, if you say so." Gilda took her cake and drink and flew over to Garble. The dragon was looking around as if he had lost something. Then he saw the griffon flying over to him. “Oh, hi there.” "Um, hi. My name's Gilda." "I'm Garble," the dragon responded, shaking her claw. "How are you?" "Doing good. So, are you enjoying this gala?" "It's alright, I guess. Wish I had a good place where I could write poetry." "You're a poet?" "Yeah. Usually, I do it in secret with my sister. But after helping with some dragon eggs I've come out and now I don't have to worry about other dragons laughing at me. Even though their laughing is what caused the dragons to save the eggs." "Well, that must've been something to see." "It was. Honestly, it wouldn't have happened if my "friends" didn't drain the lava from the underground rivers." "...That sounds pretty important. What else is there at your home?" "Mostly rough rocks and lava. There's also a lavafall that most dragons surf on. What's life like in your home?" Gilda went silent for minute signaling to Garble that he might've reminded her of something she didn't like. "I'm... Sorry... Did I close to home?" "...Kind of." Gilda took a sip of her milk before speaking again. "Griffonstone is a shambles. A city that has lost all of its glory and something I wouldn't wish on my greatest enemies." "...Uh-huh. Go on." "And you know what's worse? I was given the task to fix it up. And guess what, it's still a mess." "Well, you're only one griffon. I'm pretty sure that Griffonstone is a big place." "Oh, trust me it is. And if I couldn't make up for myself for being a bully." "You too?" "Yeah. Fluttershy said that you and I had a lot in common." "Oh, her? Yeah, she made me tell the truth about my behavior, in front of my sister no less. She wasn't wrong, I was just awful." "Really? How bad were you?" "Let's see. First, I met Spike with my gang and I kept mocking him and encouraged him to smash a phoenix egg, which I knew was harsh. When I met him again, we went through the Gauntlet of Fire to see who would be the next Dragon Lord. I said before if I won, I would start a war against ponies.” “A war? Against the ponies?” “Yeah. I could go for one, but the thing is I only did that because I didn't want to be made fun of for liking poetry!" "Seriously?!" "I know." Garble brought his claws to his face and sighed. "I did all that... Because I was too scared to be made fun of. What is wrong with me?" Gilda felt really sorry for the dragon but she thought she knew what to say. "Sorry for hearing that. Honestly, I think I know some creatures that have done far worse." "Really?" "You remember those three creatures that all of Equestria teamed up just to stop them. I heard that they were all given a chance to be better and they ignored it. And look where their fate led too, as a pigeon's toilet." Garble let out a small laugh at this, so does Gilda. "Yeah. I think they got what they deserve." "Probably. So, you're saying there's a chance for me?" "Well, you probably wouldn't have been invited here if you weren't given another chance. I mean, Discord's here." Gilda pointed over to where the said draconequus, who was having some fun with Fluttershy. Garble was a little surprised to see such a creature. "If he can be trusted after what he did, I'm pretty sure you'll be just fine." "That's... Nice. Thanks, Gilda." "Hey, it's what friends do. So, you said that you did poetry." "Yeah. You wanna find someplace where we can have some peace?" "Sure, why not? Want me to grab you some cake." "That would be great." Gilda quickly grabbed another slice of cake for Garble before they walked through the castle to find a nice place to get some quiet time. > The Hippogriff Princess and Mail Griffon > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Elsewhere in the gala, Gabby was with the rest of the ambassadors of different kingdoms. The mail griffon was very curious about the lives of the other species, so she asked them about it. “So, what do the other kingdoms look like?” Gabby asked. “Well, the Changeling Kingdom is just a giant hive,” Thorax explained first. “Way before when Queen Chrysalis ruled the hive, it was all full of shape-shifting holes, and what we all do is just hunt and patrol. And since I’m the new ruler, the hive has gone through a lot of changes as time goes by. Of course, with the help of my friends.” “I see. And you?” Gabby said to Queen Nova. “Hippogriffs live on Mount Aris,” Novo explained after him. “Meanwhile, the seaponies live in Seaquestria.” “Seaquestria?” Gabby questioned. “Oh, yes. You see, hippogriffs have the ability to turn into seaponies, thanks to the magical properties in pear shards just like this one I’m wearing.” Novo showed Gabby her shard, which the griffon found very interesting. “That’s cool. You can change your species?” Gabby questioned. “Yeah, it’s pretty interesting,” Thorax admitted. “I didn't think creatures other than changelings could do it.” “Can I see it in action?” Gabby asked. “Now isn’t really the best place,” Novo explained. “Maybe if you visit Mount Aris, I will.” “Well, I’m a mail griffon. There’s a chance I could stop by.” "Sounds good to me," Thorax commented, "Ember, what do you think?" The Dragon Lord wasn't paying attention to the other creatures but instead focused on her dress. "Ember?" The dragoness jumped and blushed. "I’m sorry. What?" she asked. “ "Do you think it would be nice if Gabby dropped by to deliver mail for the school?" "Uh, sure. Whatever makes things easier for everyone." Thorax could tell something was up with Ember, but he decided to not bring it to attention as it was most likely about her emotions, something Ember didn't like talking about. "So, did you bring anyone else to the gala?" Gabby asked. "Yaks preferred to stay home," Rutherford spoke, "So, yak go by himself." "And I did invited my daughter, Skystar," Novo added. "Now, where is she?" The creatures looked around until they could see a pink pony talking with a hippogriff that had a blue mane and blonde feathers. "There she is." They all walked over to the hippogriff and pony, which Rutherford knew who she was. "Pink Pony," he declared. The Pink Pony looked behind her and saw the yak prince. "Rutherford, you're back," Pinkie said cheerfully. She and the hippogriff looked towards Gabby and the ambassadors while waving to them. "There you are, Skystar," Novo said. "Hi, mother," the hippogriff princess said. "Skystar, we have someone that's interested in meeting you. Say hello to Gabby." The said griffon walked up to the hippogriff princess, both of them looking at each with curiosity. "Hi there," Gabby said. "How... Are you?" "I'm really good," Skystar replied. "Though Pinkie is the only one here I really enjoyed my time with." "How come?" "It's so boring here. I wish there was some kind of pool around here so we could go swimming." "I think it might be a little cold to do that." "I know. Still, it would be fun." "So, do you enjoy being a seapony?" "Well, it's fun, but I just love being a hippogriff. I've spent so much time underwater that I just wanted to get out and explore Equestria." "That's what I've been feeling too. Griffonstone felt like a prison to me. I just needed to get out of there. And I've only really been to Ponyville and Canterlot, but there's still so much I've yet to explore." "I've only left Mount Aris twice. I wish I could get out more often." "It sounds like you're getting along great," Pinkie whispered. "Yeah," Gabby agreed. "Is there anyone else we can talk to?" "Yak know crystal pony," Rutherford spoke. "Ooh, there's one here?" Pinkie asked. "Pony only one who wants yak's spare ticket." "You can go and meet that pony," Ember said, "I'm going to go see someplace that isn't so crowded." "I think I'll help you with that," Thorax said. The dragon and changeling couple walked away, leaving Novo and Rutherford with Skystar, Gabby, and Pinkie. They walked across the room looking for the crystal pony that Rutherford gave his spare ticket to. The crystal pony they found had a blue coat and her mane was pink and violet, which matched her eyes. She noticed the ambassadors and walked over to them. "Rutherford, it's good to see you." "Winter Quill," the yak announced. He quickly introduced her to the rest of his group, which she seemed interested in. "Well, it's nice to meet you." She walked up to Queen Novo and shook her talon. "So, how does it feel to be invited to the gala?" the hippogriff queen asked. "Honestly, I feel pretty lucky. I can't believe that I'm actually here. I was honestly looking for a reason that I could talk to Princess Twilight so I could get my daughter enrolled at her school." "I can try and find her for you," Pinkie proclaimed. She quickly bounced off to find her friend, leaving the rest of the creatures to talk with Winter Quill. “So, where are you from?” Skystar asked. “The Crystal Empire,” Winter explained. “It’s quite a place to be.” “Why is it called the Crystal Empire?” Skystar asked. “Empire made out of crystals,” Rutherford spoke. Skystar and Gabby gasped in amazement. “That would be very nice to see,” Novo commented. Her daughter nodded in agreement. "So, what do you hope for when your daughter gets from the school?" "Well, she's kind of... Well... Spoiled. I honestly blame myself for that." "Oh." "I'm hoping that having her interact with other creatures would get this spoiled behavior out of her." "I guess it's worth a shot, but I wouldn't hold your breath." "Quill won't know until Quill try," Rutherford spoke. "I'm sure she'll get better once she warms up to the other creatures she'll be alright," Gabby guessed. "I'm back!" Pinkie sang. She had Twilight walking beside her along with Spike. “Oh, Princess Twilight.” Winter Quill didn’t quite know how to react other than bowing. “There’s no reason to be that formal,” Twilight remarked. “Now, Pinkie said that you wanted your daughter enrolled?” As the princess and crystal pony chatted, Spike reunited with Gabby. “So, what did I miss?” he asked. “Not much,” Gabby admitted. “I’m still trying to figure out more about the other places in Equestria.” “Yeah, there’s quite a lot.” “I know that,” Skystar agreed. “There’s just so much to talk about.” “Well, we’ve got some other guests from Appaloosa. I could introduce them to you.” “That’d be great!” Gabby cheered. Spike led the guests away from the princess and crystal pony. Walking around for a bit, they found some creatures that were similar to yaks, though a bit different. They were a little rounder, their horns and hooves were smaller, and they both had headpieces with feathers in them. “What are those?” Skystar asked. “Bison,” Spike answered. “They’re kind of like yaks.” “Yak want to know more,” Rutherford spoke. He walked past the dragon, griffon, and hippogriff and walked over to the bison. “Why hello there,” the bigger bison said. “Who are you?” “Prince Rutherford.” “Well, I’m Chief Thunderhooves, and this here is Little Strongheart.” The smaller bison waved to the yak prince. “Nice to see you again,” Spike said to the bison. “Spike,” Strongheart said, “Same to you.” “How have you two met?” Gabby asked. “...Let’s just say that first impressions aren’t everything.” “Agreed,” Strongheart commented. “Moving on, we were taking the chance to have one of our tribe enrolled.” “That’s good to know. Twilight’s already talking with a crystal pony right now, so you might have to wait.” “Well, it gives us a chance to chat with each other. So, what are your homes like?” “Yaks live in Yakyakistan,” Rutherford spoke. “Very snowy place.” “We live in the desert,” Thunderhooves said. “It can get quite hot there, though I have no idea how’d we survive in the snow.” “Same with yaks in heat.” “It would be nice to visit Yakyakistan,” Strongheart commented. “Maybe bison should see Mount Aris.” “What’s that place?” “It’s where we live,” Novo said. “It the home of hippogriff and seaponies.” As the kingdom leaders chatted, Skystar and Gabby kept looking around the room. “There are so many ponies here,” Skystar said. “I know,” Gabby said. “I wonder if there are other dragons and changelings around here.” “Maybe if we find Ember and Thorax we could find them.” “Let’s go then.” They told Novo what they were going to do, and left them with the buffalos. The hippogriff princess and mail griffon wandered around. “They’ve got to be around here somewhere. Where did they go?” Gabby and Skystar flew upwards until they could see a group of six different looking ponies. The griffon gasped. “Look, there are the pillars!” she exclaimed. “Pillars?” “They’re the ones responsible for growing the Tree of Harmony. Spike told me about them. Let’s go and talk with them.” Skystar was still wanting to find out more about changelings and dragons, but she was wanting to know more about the pillars. She hadn’t heard of them before. The pillars of Equestria were chatting between each other as the griffon and hippogriff showed up. “Why hello there,” the bearded unicorn said. “Who might you two be?” “I’m Gabby. And this is Skystar.” The hippogriff prince waved to the pillar ponies looking between them. “It’s nice to meet you. I am Starswirl the Bearded. My friends here are Mistmane, Rockhoof, Flash Magnus, Meadowbrook, and Somnambula.” “Wow,” Skystar gasped. “It’s really nice to meet all of you.” “Same here,” Mistmane said. “I’ve been interested in coming to Seaquestria. I’ve heard good things about it.” “Yeah, but it gets boring when that’s your entire life.” “I think you should enjoy what you have,” Rockhoof said. “You never really appreciate something until it’s gone.” “What do you mean?” “It’s a bit of a long story. It started after we were free from limbo.” Gabby and Skystar were amazed as they listened to the story of the pillars’ return. “And now we’re here,” Flash finished. “Wow,” Gabby gasped. “That sounds... Pretty hard.” “It was rather jarring how life has changed,” Somnambula admitted. “Some of us are having a harder time than others.” “I think I know what that’s like.” “Do tell,” Mistmane requested. “Griffonstone... Is a mess. It happened years ago, but the long story short is that we lost an idol that caused all griffons’ greed to take over and... I don’t like talking about it.” “I can see your struggle,” Somnambula commented. “Change is something that can be good and bad. While losing your idol is likely a blessing in disguise. The idol is simply an item that could be replaced with anything else. Friendship, on the other hand, is something that can’t be replaced. It’s something that isn’t represented by just an object. It requires others to interact with.” “...She’s right,” Skystar said. “When I was stuck in Seaquestria I only pretended Sheldon and Shelly. They’re seashells that I wish could talk more.” “Right,” Starswirl said. “I’m assuming that this gala is something special to you.” “It really is. I don’t think I’ve been around this many creatures.” “Me neither,” Gabby added. “There’s just so much we want to explore.” “Only time can tell where you’ll go,” Mistmane said. “Who knows,” Flash said, “Maybe you’ll be called by the map in Ponyville.” “You really think so?” Gabby asked. “My cousin told me that ponies other than Twilight’s friends have been called,” Skystar said. “There’s a chance. Hey, have you seen a changeling or a dragon around here? Other than Dragon Lord Ember and King Thorax.” “I think I saw a changeling,” Rockhoof spoke. “He was over there and...” Before he could finish, the hippogriff and griffon flew off again. “Hehe, young ones.” Skystar and Gabby kept looking around for the changeling, having no idea where it was. “Maybe we should’ve asked what the changeling looked like,” Gabby spoke. “Don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll be able to tell who it is,” Skystar stated. She looked around until she saw a pony-like creature that was dark green with red horns. “That must be him.” The princess quickly flew down and got closer to the changeling. “Hi there.” The changeling looked behind him to see the hippogriff princess with the griffon landing beside her. “What do you want?” the changeling grumbled. “My friend and I want to chat.” “Well, I don’t want to be here.” “...So why are you here?” “Because my brother wanted me to come out of my shell. I’m perfectly fine in it.” Gabby knew this kind of behavior from experience, but Skystar was oblivious to this. “Well, you’re here, so we might as well talk.” “Well, I’m not up for it. I don’t even know who you are.” “I’m Princess Skystar, and this is Gabby.” “Hi,” the griffon said. “Listen, I know you’re wanting to talk to other creatures,” Pharynx said. “There are plenty around so just leave me alone.” He began to fly away, but Skystar wanted to keep talking. “But I want to know more about changelings,” the hippogriff princess said. “Then learn that I’m not interested.” “But I’ve barely ever gone out of Mount Aris.” “Then there should be someone who’s like you. Can you just leave me alone?” “But I wanna know more about the changelings.” Pharynx was starting to get fed up. He gave a roar that shocked Skystar and a couple of the other guests before he stormed off. The hippogriff was very shocked by this. “Why did he do that?” “Some creatures probably just don’t wanna interact with others,” Gabby noted. “I would know.” “Really?” “Yeah. Most griffons are rather sour. Not wanting to do anything unless it gets them something in the end.” “That’s... That’s not right.” “I know, but it’s just how some creatures are. I do my best to be nice to them, but they just stay the way as they are.” Skystar didn’t say anything as she didn’t know what to say. “They can’t... It’s just... They’re just as bad as the Storm King.” “...Greedy creatures that only want to be by themselves?” “Well... Okay, maybe not that bad... I...” “Have you ever had this kind of conflict?” “...Not really. I really only argued with my mother. I thought that most creatures wouldn't be like her. Since I was stuck underwater for most of my life I just wanted to do so much on the outside world. I thought it would be so easy after I was grounded.” “I know what disappointment is like. I once tried to get a cutie mark.” “How’d that go?” “Well, since ponies are the only creatures that can get cutie marks, I couldn’t get one. The closest thing that I could get was a pair of wooden cutouts. I would show you them, but they’re at home right now.” “I’m sure they look nice.” “Oh, trust me, they’re great. I think your social skills just need a little bit of work.” “I guess so. Maybe we could meet up again and have some fun.” “Yeah. I don’t think the gala is a place where too much excitement happens. Though it is nice to chat with other creatures and take things slow. When we meet up again, maybe we could try something exciting.” “Right. At least we got a pretty good friendship.” Gabby had to agree. While the gala wasn’t really the thing for creatures wanting some excitement, this did mean they would meet up again and have some good times in the future. “You want to get some desserts and get back to the pillars?” “Sure thing.” With that, the hippogriff and griffon flew off to enjoy the rest of the night. > Sealed with a Kiss > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Back with Ember and Thorax, the changeling king managed to catch up with the dragon lord. Ember was still shuffling along in her dress as she grumbled along. “Ember,” Thorax called, and Ember turned to see him coming towards her. “Is there something wrong?” “It’s this dress,” Ember stated. “It’s cumbersome and I don’t see the point of it. I mean we don’t normally wear clothes on a regular basis, so why are we all dressed up like this?” “You have to admit, everyone here looks nice. Especially you.” Ember didn’t take her boyfriend’s compliment. “I just wish this skirt wasn’t so big.” They eventually found a few empty seats to sit down in, which the dragoness took full advantage of. She placed her claws in her lap and sighed. She and Thorax looked across the large room with all the guests. “There sure are a lot of ponies here. I don’t even think I can see Novo or Rutherford.” “Yeah. I don’t see a lot of places where anyone could get privacy.” Thorax then remembered the garden Spike was talking about before. “Spike told me there was a garden around here. Maybe we could be alone there.” “I guess. I just sat down and now I don’t want to move this dumb dress.” “Well, if that’s the case, how about we get some drinks?” “Sure. That would be great.” “Alright. I’ll be right back.” The changeling walked off, leaving his girlfriend by herself. Thorax soon found the table containing several desserts and drinks, but what he was interested in was the punch bowl. The changeling got to cups and was about to pour himself and Ember some of the punch until a certain draconequus popped up in the bowl. Discord was sitting on an inflatable chair, wearing sunglasses, while holding a glass of punch in his hand. The changeling jumped, nearly dropping the glasses onto the floor. “Discord?” Thorax questioned. “Evening Thorax,” Discord replied. “How are you doing?” “...Good. Could you... get out of the punch please?” Discord groaned as he snapped his fingers. He returned to his normal size and teleported beside the changeling. “Oh Thorax, you need to learn to have more fun. Anyways, how’s your night going?” “Good so far. I’m trying to figure out when’s the best time for Ember and mine’s first kiss.” “Ah, one of the biggest moments of a loving relationship. I’m honestly jealous of you. The closest thing Fluttershy and I have for a date are our tea parties.” “Well, you spend more time together. Ember and I have to schedule when we meet up. Even then we can only hang out for so long.” Thorax sighed as he poured two glasses of punch. “Yet you’re already thinking of making the first move. Man, friendship is hard enough, but love is so much more complicated.” “I know. I mean, love is like bread and butter for a changeling. Sometimes literally. It can taste like bread and butter for some.” “Does any of it taste like chocolate milk?” “Not that I know of.” Thorax then saw a glass of chocolate milk being held up in front of his face. “Discord, I said I’d bring Ember punch. Plus, I don’t even know if she likes chocolate milk.” “Oh, you never know until you’ve tried.” “I appreciate you trying to help, Discord, but I want to make sure things don’t get out of control.” “Eh, she doesn’t really know me. Besides, I guess this isn’t the best time for me to be a third wheel. I learned my lesson after Treehugger.” “Who’s she?” “Long story short, I was still learning how friendship worked. But if you want my advice, if you want your first kiss to be unforgettable, save it for the dance.” “Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind.” Thorax took the two punch glasses and walked away back to his girlfriend. He walked back to where Ember is still sitting. When he got back, the changeling handed his girlfriend one of the glasses before they both took a sip. “This is some pretty good punch,” Ember commented. “Yeah, I wish I could thank the guy who made it,” Thorax agreed. Taking another sip, Thorax took a deep breath. “So, Ember, there should be a dance that starts in a little while. I was wondering if you... wanted to dance.” “Dance?” “I’ve been practicing ever since I got the invitation to the gala. I think... It would be fun.” “...Thorax, you know I’m having a hard time just walking around in this thing.” “Maybe you just need a little more practice.” “Well, you can’t really change while you’re wearing that suit.” “Actually, Rarity made this one special for me.” Thorax showed off what he meant by changing into his dragon form. His suit remained completely intact. “She said she was trying to expand her fashion to fit other creatures.” “You think she could make these things fireproof?” “I don’t know. It’s could work.” “Ugh. I just don’t see the point of these clothes.” “I see Applejack wearing her hat.” “That’s different. That could just fall off at a strong breeze. Not to mention it doesn’t mess with her legs.” Thorax changed back into his normal form. “It’s still a great dress. I understand that fashion isn’t your thing, but just keep it up for the night.” “I’m trying. Maybe next time I’ll ask for this skirt to be shorter.” “That gives Rarity chances to make a better design.” “I just want to walk properly.” Ember placed her glass down and stood up. She gave a frustrated sigh as she wasn’t in the mood to walk again. “If you want, I could carry you on my back.” Ember thought for a moment, it either riding on her boyfriend’s back or flying. She didn’t want anyone else to see her in a dress, so she sat on Thorax’s back. “Where to?” “The garden.” Ember crossed her arm in annoyance as she was carried throughout the room. While she was hoping that it would have a lower chance of being spotted if she wasn’t flying. However, the opposite seemed to be happening as several ponies looked and pointed at her. Ember failed to hide her blush as Thorax carried her through the room. Ember was releaved when they were out of the castle and in the garden. There, she and Thorax could hear some bongos being played. "No Pride, outside. Alone, of my zone," said a voice, singing to the beat of the bongos. "Is that Garble?" Thorax questioned. "I should've known he'd take a shot at it with some creature," Ember chuckled. They looked around until they found the beatnik dragon playing his bongos with Gilda sitting beside him. Garble stopped his beat when he saw the couple walking over to them. "Hey, Ember," Garble said, "What's up?" "We're just trying to get away from big crowds." She got off Thorax's back and across from the dragon and griffon. "How long have you guys been out here?" "Only for a few minutes," Gilda answered. "How's the night been treating you?" "My biggest gripe is this dress. I can barely walk in it." "Huh. I haven't had any trouble with mine." "Maybe it's because you have to walk on two legs." "Could be. Anyways, Garble's been trying to get me into poetry. It's pretty nice since there wasn't any singing in Griffonstone." "Yeah, I really don't understand that," Garble said. "I honestly couldn't tell you why." "Well, you don't have to worry about the rules here," Thorax chuckled. "You think you could play another beat?" "Sure thing," Garble replied. He started playing on his bongos again. "Fire, red hot, my emotions, I'd rather not. Communication, such a struggle, why am I always in a muddle? Outside of my zone, I'm never on my own." As soon as he stopped, Gilda and Thorax applauded his poem. "Really good," the changeling commented. "Thanks. Really glad I don’t have to hide this anymore.” “That’s good to hear,” Gilda said. “I kind of want to see what the Dragon Lands look like.” “It’s one of the best places to be in the winter,” Ember commented. “Yeah, you guys at least have fire breath and fur,” Thorax commented. “All I’ve got it chitin.” “Couldn’t you change into something like a sheep? Its wool can make itself warm,” Gilda asked. “I could, but while a changeling can copy an appearance, we can’t copy some abilities. Like we can copy dragons’ wings, but we don’t have their resistances to heat.” “Yeah, I remember that,” Ember muttered. “Wait, what are you talking about?” Garble questioned. Ember and Thorax looked at each other as they knew Garble didn’t know them completely. “Well, do you know who Bismuth is?” Thorax asked. “Yeah?” The couple quickly explained to Garble and Gilda the time when they were first dating. “You were Bismuth?” “Uh-huh. I did that because I was worried about how dragons would react around me.” “I mean... I would feel a little off if there was a shape-shifting bug among us.” “Well, you’re enjoying each other’s company,” Gilda commented. “So, it’s not bad.” “Hmm, I guess not. Still, I would’ve like to know that you were a changeling before.” “Sorry about that,” Thorax apologized with a rather guilty sigh. “Anyways, what else is something you guys don’t know about?” “Well, Smolder told me about somethings that happened at the school. She said that she came out about her dressing secret.” “Dressing secret?” Gilda questioned. “Yeah, just like how I secretly did poetry, Smolder had an affinity for dressing up fancy.” “How long has she had that?” Ember asked. Garble simply shrugged. “I guess it’s good that dragons aren’t going to be stuck with “Tough and Greedy” cliche,” Thorax commented. “Good point,” Garble commented. Ember looked down at her big dress. She had a hard time walking in it but an even harder time believing Smolder had a liking to these. “Where did you and Smolder get those clothes anyway?” Gilda asked. “Trade secret.” “Alright then. Ember, how did you react to Garble’s secret?” The Dragon Lord looked a little surprised when she was called. “Sorry, I wasn’t listening,” she responded. “You were saying something about dresses?” “Yeah,” Garble confirmed. “When we were alone, Smolder and I would have some secret tea parties while I also did some poetry. It was pretty fun. I’m glad we don’t have to hide it anymore.” “Good to hear, though. You guys want me to get you some drinks?” “Sure,” the drake and griffon answered. The Dragon Lord held her dress up and walked back inside. Gilda and Garble were about to continue with poetry when the griffon noticed Thorax was looking down again. “What’s up, man?” Gilda questioned. “I don’t think Ember’s liking the gala,” the changeling sighed. “That’s pretty obvious.” “Well, she says she’s not used to wearing dresses. You think that could change?” “I wouldn’t hold your breath,” Garble responded. “Probably not. I spent so much time practicing my dancing.” “You know, Ember isn’t really used to showing emotions. Maybe she just needs a breaking point.” “I don’t want to force her to do something she doesn’t want to do.” “Well we weren’t up for friendship,” Gilda stated, “Yet here we are.” “That’s different. Every creature needs friendship. That’s how we took care of Tirek, Chrysalis, and Cozy Glow.” “True,” Garble said, “But still, I’ve admitted my secret love of poetry and Smolder did the same with dressing up. Ember probably just needs to get used to her emotions. It’s gotta happen soon.” “...Maybe I should talk to her. I’ll catch up with you guys later.” The changeling king walked away, leaving the drake and griffon to their fun. Thorax looked around the gala. He could see ponies everywhere. There were a couple of other creatures, such as the kirins and buffalos, but he couldn’t see where Ember went. He tried flying above every creature, but still, the Dragon Lord was nowhere to be seen. “She didn’t head home, did she?” Thorax asked himself. He was beginning to worry. Then he soon saw his brother walking around, looking like he was wanting to be alone. The king landed in front of his brother, much to Pharynx’s shock. “Warn me next time,” he ordered. “Sorry,” Thorax apologized. “Look, have you seen Ember around here?” “The blue dragon? No clue where she is. Why don’t you ask them?” Pharynx pointed over to former princess alicorns. Celestia and Luna were both chatting with Cadence and Shining Armor. Thorax jumped. “What... What are they doing here?” “Just because they aren’t working anymore, doesn’t mean they can’t be useful. Besides, they’re talking to the princess of love.” Soon, without warning, Pharynx shoved his brother over to the stallion and alicorns. Thorax bumped into Luna, who turned around and looked towards the worried changeling. “Oh, hello Thorax,” the former princess of the night responded. She helped the changeling king up, though that didn’t do much to stop him from him feeling nervous. “It’s nice to see you again,” Shining said. “Also nice since we’re not in a situation where Equestria’s future doesn’t depend out what we do. Anyways, what’s new with you?” “Gab art... Ember,” the changeling stuttered. “...Are you feeling okay?” Celestia asked. Thorax took a huge breath. “I’m nervous like crazy. Ember and I have been dating for a long time and I thought we’d have our first kiss tonight. What do I do?” Cadence couldn’t help but giggle a little bit. “I think Shining knows how you feel,” she said. “You’re going to enjoy that are you?” the stallion asked. “Maybe.” She then turned back to Thorax. “Listen, Thorax, I don’t know that much about dragons, other than Spike, so tell us about Ember.” “Okay,” the changeling said. “She’s not really proud of showing her emotions around others, she really likes gems and fish. She also has been interested in the art at the hive, but she doesn’t like admitting that.” “I see. Shining, didn’t you use to feel like when we dated?” “Yeah,” Shining admitted. “Well, how did your first kiss go?” Thorax asked. “I just had to gather up the courage. I think you need to do the same thing. If Ember’s really the one that you love, you should go for her.” “R... Right.” “Though, I think you should hurry,” Cadence said, “The dance is going to start soon.” “Yeah, I know. Have you seen Ember around here?” “I think we could help out,” Celestia said. “I have been to this castle for a couple of years. Surely we’ll be able to find her.” The changeling king smiled as the two former princesses helped him look around the castle. It took a little longer than they thought as they, given that Ember wasn’t in the main hall. They began looking into different parts of the castle that were used for the gala. Eventually, they found a room that had Ember’s dress lying flat on a sofa. “She must be nearby,” Luna commented. The king and princesses kept looking around until they found the Dragon Lord in the throne room. She was looking at the stained glass windows showing the many adventures Twilight and her friends had gone on. “Ember,” Thorax cried, “There you are.” Ember still had her gloves on, but she didn’t seem to be very happy. “Hey,” she said flatly. “...What’s wrong?” The Dragon Lord sighed. “You ever have times when you’re just under a load of stress?” “Well... The most stressful time is when I was trying to help reform the changelings. Or maybe when I was finding more changelings to enroll at Twilight’s school.” “Try doing that with dragons. I’ve got to make sure they stay in order and when I tried enrolling some, either they or their parents kept them from leaving. This gala feels like I could actually get away from that work and have some time to myself.” The two former princesses both looked at each sympathizing with Ember’s situation. “Honestly, you should try being in charge for a thousand years,” Celestia said. “...Seriously?” Ember and Thorax questioned. “Yes,” Luna confirmed. “My sister is very good at hiding her age.” She chuckled a bit at her comment. “Not to mention, I had the job of keeping dreams under control.” “You controlled dreams?” the dragoness questioned. “More specifically nightmares. Honestly, we agree that you could use some time off.” “You guys are retired. You get to have all the vacation time you want. I have to be in charge of the dragons until I get to retirement age.” She brought her claws to her face to rub her eyes. “Listen, Ember, if you wanted some time to be alone, you could’ve just told me,” Thorax said. “Then again, you aren’t really good with emotions.” “I know.” “We’re going to head back to the main hall. You join whenever you want.” Thorax started walking away along with the two alicorns. Ember looked at her gloves and thought about how Thorax was feeling. He seemed so happy to be at the gala. The Dragon Lord stood alone for a minute before walking back to the room where she left her dress. She picked it up and ran back to the main hall just in time to catch Luna. “Hey,” the dragoness said. Luna stopped and turned back at the Dragon Lord. “Oh, you’ve changed your mind?” she asked. “Yeah, but I have to ask Rarity for something. You know where she is?” A little while later, Thorax was standing by himself. He watched other couples enjoying their night. “Hey, buddy,” Spike said. The king looked over to see his first friend walk up to him. “Where’s Ember?” “She wanted some time alone,” Thorax responded. “She said she had too much stress so I’m leaving her by herself.” “Right then. It’s good to have alone time. Maybe she and Rarity could hang out at the spa.” “That might be good for her.” Spike looked around the room until he saw a happy griffon fly over to him. “Spike!” Gabby cheered. She hugged the dragon without warning. “Hey, you’re doing pretty good.” “I am. Plus, the dance is going to start.” Gabby let Spike go and pointed to the band that was starting some slow music with the guests dancing along to it. “Oh, so do you want to dance?” Spike readjusted his bowtie and grinned. He held his claw out for Gabby to hold as they both walked out onto the dance floor. Thorax smiled as he watched his friend enjoy himself, but still, he felt down. “What’s with the long face?” asked a voice. Thorax looked beside him to see Ember. She was wearing her dress, though it looked like it had been modified to make the dress shorter to show her feet and it wasn’t as wide as before. “Ember!” Thorax gasped. “You look... Nice. You gave the dress another shot?” “Rarity made it easier for me to walk in. I don’t have to hold it up every time now.” She and the changeling looked over to various ponies dancing. “So... Do you want to dance?” “I have no idea how dancing works.” “You don’t have to worry.” With a flash, Thorax changed into his dragon form. “I’ve also been practicing my dance moves as a dragon. Just for you.” Ember couldn’t help but smile at Thorax’s comment. Holding each other’s claws, they walked out onto the dance floor. The music was soothing to listen to as Thorax took the lead as he and Ember started their ballroom dancing. The two looked in each other’s eyes. Both of them blushing. “Are you enjoying this?” the dragoness asked. “Well, you are.” The Dragon Lord lowered her brow and huffed some smoke. “You know you’re kind of cute when you’re mad.” Ember was a little annoyed but she managed to show a smile. The two danced along with the rest of the guests until Thorax held Ember up in a dip. “Whoa! What’s this?” “It’s one of the moves that Rarity taught me.” He pulled Ember back so they were both standing upright. Thorax gave a nervous chuckle as Ember gained a sassy smile. “So, you like it?” “In a way. How about I take the lead this time?” “Um... If you think soOAH!” Thorax was surprised when Ember took control so fast. “Easy.” “Hey, if you’re enjoying this, I’m enjoying this.” The couple smiled at each other as they continued to dance. While they did, Thorax spoke up. “Hey, Ember, there’s one reason I wanted to dance with you. It’s one of the ways I could show you my love for you.” “That’s good to know.” “It’s not just the dance.” Ember was a little confused by this. “What were you going to do?” The Dragon Lord took her boyfriend into a dip. She saw the disguised changeling take a deep breath before he leaned towards her, kissing Ember on the lips. The Dragon Lord nearly dropped the changeling as she blushed as red as a ruby. Thorax managed to recover and look at his girlfriend's shocked face. “Ember, I didn’t mean to make you feel like this.” The changeling shifted back to his old form as Ember shook her head. “H... How do you feel?” “That... Felt... Amazing.” Thorax rubbed the back of his head bashfully. “I’m glad that you enjoyed it.” Both creatures looked at each other as they could rather fuzzy inside. “This is getting a little awkward.” “How about we go back outside?” Thorax just simply nodded and followed the Dragon Lord out of the castle. They walked back into the garden and sat under the starlit sky. The changeling let out a sigh and smiled. “It’s pretty beautiful out here.” “Yeah, I guess so.” Ember was trying to hide her blushing by using her wing to block her face from Thorax’s view. “I don’t think it’s as beautiful as you though.” “Thorax, please.” “...Ember, we’re alone. Everyone else is inside dancing. It’s just you and me.” Thorax tried to scoot closer to the dragoness, but Ember tried shoving him back. “Ember, please. Emotions are good.” “Then why do they feel so weird to me? When my dad was the Dragon Lord the only emotions that felt right were anger and confusion.” “Those don’t sound like good emotions to have.” “I know that, but even after all of this time when I started taking on friendship... It just feels off to me.” “But what about when we started dating?” Ember held her legs as she sighed. “Honestly, I sometimes don’t want to show my emotions because of a small fear of creatures calling me weak.” “Weak?” “Yeah. Like, say that someone tries and uses something I like as a way to trick me or force me to lose.” “You think they could make emotions into a weakness?” The Dragon Lord just nodded with a frown. “Ember, that isn’t weak to me. If you don’t want to hurt someone you like, that’s fine. It means you aren’t just a one-dimensional fighting machine.” “Uh huh. I said ‘something’ though.” “I have a feeling at what you meant.” Ember began blushing again. She tried hiding it with her wing, but Thorax pushed that aside. “Ember, I love you.” The Dragon Lord managed to smile back at her boyfriend. “I love you too Thorax.” She got too close to the changeling so they could start nuzzling each other. They both looked up the night sky and saw a shooting star. “You want to head back inside?” “I think I wanna stay out here a little longer.” Thorax smiled as he and Ember looked at each other’s eyes. The two smiled as they shared another kiss to strengthen their relationship. > Heading Home > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Soon, the gala was over. Many ponies started heading home while others stayed behind for a little bit longer. All the first-time guests were all staying behind as well. “This was fun while it lasted,” Novo sighed. “I wish we had more time to hang out,” Celestia agreed. “Maybe Luna and I could drop by Mount Aris sometime.” The alicorn and hippogriff then looked over to Skystar and Gabby. “So, how likely would it be for you to drop by Mount Aris?” the princess asked Gabby. “If you have any mail I need to bring over to Ponyville, I’ll fly by,” Gabby responded. The two new friends shared a hug before Skystar walked over to her mother. “Yak will be pleased to see buffalo at school,” Prince Rutherford said to Chief Thunderhooves. “I’m sure that they’ll get along like water and flour,” Thunderhooves spoke. The yak and buffalo seemed to be getting along very well. Rainbow was flying around looking to see where Gilda was. She found the griffon sitting at a table talking with Garble. “I hope we’ll see each other again,” Garble said. “Yeah, I think I’ll drop by when I need a place to warm up,” Gilda responded. “Be sure to keep up that cool poetry.” Both griffon and dragon gave each other a fist bump as Dash walked over to them. “There you are G,” the rainbow mare said. “Where have you been? I've barely seen you the whole night.” “Oh, shoot, Dash I forgot. I found Garble and we had a lot in common.” Garble looked towards Dash and felt a little awkward. “Hey,” he said sheepishly. “So, no hard feelings.” “You helped keep those three imbeciles we don’t speak of busy so we could save Equestria. We’re good.” “Anyways, I’m glad I met Garble,” Gilda spoke. “We were both bullies and I’m really surprised by how he redeemed himself.” “Yeah,” Garble admitted, “The plan was to get the dragons to laugh at me. And it worked.” “Good for you,” Dash commented. “Anyways, I think your rides home will be here soon. You should head back to the station.” “Yeah, I know,” Gilda sighed. “We can always meet up again,” Garble said. “Heck, I could visit you.” “I’ll keep that in mind. Just to be sure to bring some gemstone just in case. And don’t challenge a griffon to one of their games.” Garble nodded making a mental note. They then heard some laughter and looked over to see Thorax and Ember holding each other’s claw and hoof. “Oh, you’re really precious,” Thorax said to his girlfriend. “You’re the one who shares love,” Ember said. “How do I compete with that?” The two suddenly saw Gilda, Garble, and Rainbow Dash. Ember blushed and quickly pretended not to be acting lovey-dovey. “Ugh, yeah... I’m sure we can fix that problem with the students.” Thorax knew what she was doing and played along. “Sure thing. I’m sure they’ll do better once we do that.” “Getting a room?” Gilda asked. Dash snickered a bit as Garble did his best to hold back his laughter. Ember gave them a glare, but Thorax managed to keep her calm. “Well, this was fun guys. Hope we get to do something like this again.” “Yeah, sure. Anyways, we should get going now.” The friends all made their way to the train station and waited for their rides home. “It’s pretty chilly out here.” “Yeah, I can’t wait to get back to the Dragon Lands,” Ember spoke. “A nice relaxing pool of lava will feel so nice.” “It would,” Garble agreed. “I don’t think I would enjoy that,” Thorax admitted. “I think I could go for some tea.” “I just want some time to myself,” Pharynx spoke. He looked down the track to see if the train was getting close. “Glad you enjoyed your night,” Rainbow said to Gilda. “Thanks, Dash,” the Griffonstone ambassador said. “You know, I’m hoping that the next event that we get invited to is a little more exciting.” “Like, some sort of carnival,” Skystar suggested. “Exactly.” “I’ll let Twilight know about that,” Dash commented. Gilda gave a thumbs-up as they heard a whistle. The train started coming into the station to take the visiting creatures home. “Finally,” Pharynx groaned. He didn’t waste any time getting on board. Many other creatures did the same thing. “See you guys next event,” Thorax said. He walked onboard the coach with Ember. The Dragon Lord couldn’t help herself and she slowly reached her claw out to hold the changeling king’s hoof. She tried to hide her blushing by using her wing, hoping that no one was noticing. Thorax did and he just smiled. Their train soon left and the griffons waited for theirs. “Have a safe trip home,” Dash said to her griffon friend. “Aren’t you traveling with us?” Gabby asked. “This train doesn’t go to Ponyville. My friends and I are going to wait for the next one.” “Right,” Gilda said. She then saw the next train steam into the station. “Here’s our ride. See you again sometime Dash.” The two friends shared a hug before the griffons got on board. The coach doors closed and the engine pulled the coaches out of the station. Gilda sat down with Gabby, who decided to speak up. “That was fun,” the mail griffon said. “I really enjoyed my time with Skystar.” “Yeah, it’s like you two were sisters separated at birth.” “What do you think it would be like to be a seapony?” “I honestly don’t know. Didn’t she show you?” “Sadly no.” “It is winter, so unless you wanna be a popsicle, I’d stay with fur and feathers instead of scales.” “It would be kind of weird not having legs.” “Weird when you walk on only two legs.” “What?” “Nothing.” Gilda hadn’t really told Gabby about the first time she met the other ambassadors. She and Gilda sat out the rest of the ride waiting to arrive at home.
