Rainbow's Birthday

“PINKIE PIE!!”

Twilight was mad at her. She had interrupted her in the middle of an important project. That didn’t seem to make Pinkie’s determination sway, however.

“But Twilight! It’s Rainbow’s birthday tomorrow!! We need to set it up!” Pinkie exclaimed, shaking Twilight.

“Oh my Celestia. I completely forgot! I was so busy, I lost track of the date. Pinkie, what do you want my help with?” Twilight said, a bit panicked at first, but calming down after a moment.

“I need you to round up all of our friends, minus Rainbow, while I set up the party and get her,” Pinkie said seriously. She then bounced away.

The next day

Rainbow Dash was trying to rest. Her friends said that they needed to do something, and she was sure that they were planning another big party for her. While she was okay with a party for all of Ponyville, she just wanted her best friends to be there. She was interrupted by a shout from below her.

“HEY RAINBOW DASH!”

Rainbow groaned, and rolled over on her cloud, to see Pinkie beneath her. “What do you want, Pinkie?” Rainbow asked grumpily.

“I NEED YOU TO FOLLOW ME!” Pinkie shouted up.

Rainbow covered her ears. “You know, you don’t need to yell, right?”

“OH R- I mean, Oh, right!”

Rainbow groaned. “So you want me to follow you?”

“Yupperoni!”

She groaned again. “Fine, where to?”

“Sooooomeewhere”

“Ugggghhh Pinkie, I know every place in Ponyville, where could we possibly be going that I don’t know of?”

“A surprise~ NOW CLOSE YOUR EYES!!”

“How am I supposed to f-”

“Just follow the sound of my voice!”

Rainbow rolled her eyes, but did as she was asked, and closed them. Pinkie started to talk non-stop until they got wherever they were going. Which seemed to take forever, unfortunately for Rainbow. But, it was also fortunate, because it meant Rainbow could follow the sound of Pinkie’s voice all the way there.

“Are we there yet?” Rainbow eventually asked, her eyes still regrettably closed.

“Almost! But you can open your eyes now, if you want.”

Rainbow slowly opened her eyes, expecting a big party. She was surprised by what she saw. Instead of a big party for all of Ponyville, there was a small party with all of her friends, including Spike. She looked around and saw the cake that Pinkie had most likely made. She smiled.

“Happy birthday, Rainbow.” Fluttershy said in her normal quiet manner.

Spike was about to say something, but was interrupted by Rarity. “Darling, I’m sure you probably would’ve preferred a larger party, but this was the best we could do on short notice,” she said apologetically.

“It’s cool, I actually just wanted it to be us,” Rainbow stated.

“Aw, sugarcube, you’re jus’ sayin’ that,” Applejack said, trying not to smile.

“Totally not. This is twenty-percent cooler than if it was a big party with some ponies I don’t really know that well.”

“Well, since we’re all here now, why don’t we enjoy the party?” Spike asked.

Everypony rolled their eyes, but they did get on with the party. After a while however, they got tired of the normal party food, so they were ready to cut the cake.

“Would you like to do it, Rainbow? I mean, it’s your birthday after all,” Twilight said, hoofing the knife over to her.

“Well, if you really want me to… OF COURSE I WOULD!” Rainbow exclaimed, her smiling from ear to ear. She carefully cut it, but it ended a bit uneven. Nopony seemed to notice, or maybe they didn’t care. Instead, they cheered as Rainbow cut it. Pinkie started serving the slices. Rainbow requested one of the smaller-looking pieces, as did Rarity. They all sat down and started to eat their pieces of chocolate cake. After everypony was finished, everypony but Rainbow got up to get their gift for her. Pinkie was first to return, followed shortly by the rest of her friends. She opened her gift from Pinkie first. It turned out to be a rock candy necklace. “Er, thanks, Pinkie. It’s, uh, just what I’ve always wanted…”

“It is?”

“Yeah, sure.”

Pinkie hugged Rainbow tightly, much to Rainbow’s dismay. “Uh, Pinkie?”

“Oh, right, you need to open the other’s presents too!” Pinkie said, releasing the Rainbow from her hug.

Rainbow then proceeded to open her gift from Fluttershy. Her’s was a stuffed tortoise. Rainbow nearly cried, but thanked Fluttershy softly. Fluttershy nodded. She then unwrapped Rarity’s.

“A dress, Rarity? What would I do with a dress?”

“Where it for special occasions, darling. I know you don’t like to dress up, but at least promise me you’ll wear it for something special at least once?”

Rainbow sighed. “Cross my heart, hope to fly, stick a cupcake in my eye. I will wear it at least once.”

She then proceeded to open Twilight’s gift. It was the latest Daring Do book. And it was signed. Rainbow would’ve died from fangirling on the spot, but it would’ve been embarrassing. She still squeed though, which earned a small chuckle from Twilight.

“I’m glad you like it, Rainbow. I have been in touch with her since we met last year. I had, in passing, mentioned your birthday, and she sent me that, along with a note saying to give it to you. I didn’t read it, either. She wanted you to be the first. Think of this as both from her and myself.”

“Thanks soooooo much, Twilight!”

“You’re very welcome, Rainbow.”

Rainbow opened her gift from Applejack. It was a… Piece of paper?

“Um, Applejack? Why did you get me a piece of paper?”

“Turn it over, sugarcube.”

Rainbow turned it over. On the other side, what was written on it made her extremely happy. “Are you serious? A pass for getting cider?!”

Applejack chuckled. “Sure is, sugarcube.”

“Is.. Is it my turn now?” Spike asked.

“Sure is!” Rainbow said, pulling him over.

Spike handed Rainbow his gift for her. She opened it carefully. Inside was a crystal sculpture of her with all of her friends. “Aw, thanks, Spike. It’s a nice gift. Thanks everypony, they all were nice gifts,” Rainbow said.

“Group hug?” Pinkie asked.

“Group hug.”

Rainbow pulled all of her friends into a hug.
