Lyra needs to comfort her best friend during troubled times. However, her best friend seems to be missing.

Bon Bon has been going through a bad relationship, and it is up to Lyra to comfort her. However, she seems to be missing.

My first intentionally short story, with some unintentional similarities to my other story "In Times of War".

All That Matters

A lone, mint-colored unicorn mare sits on a park bench one cold, cloudy day. Many of her friends walk past her, not paying her any mind. She kindly returns the gesture, and stares at seemingly nothing as they trot by. She hadn't even noticed them, she was in such deep thought.

She looks down to the ground, a frown firmly planted onto her face. She deeply inhales the crisp afternoon air, sighing as she exhales. Her eyes close as she thinks about the events that transpired not a week ago.

Her and Bon Bon had not been on good terms as of late. Bon Bon had recently broken up with her coltfriend, and has practically ignored her roommate as she sobbed and whined for days. Lyra, in a way, felt betrayed by her best friend. Considering the fact that he was all she had been talking and crying about for days, Lyra felt as if she had been abandoned.

She went out of town to go do "some errands", she told Lyra this morning. What those errands were was anypony's guess. She abruptly left the house and Lyra behind as she galloped to the train station.

Could this have been about the mysterious coltfriend she had been hearing about? He had occasionally visited their house, but seemingly ignored Lyra as he and Bon Bon talked and gossiped for hours on end.

And then, merely days after they got together... they broke up. Another mare was apparently involved, leaving poor Bon Bon devastated. The cream-colored mare tried the best she could to repair the crippled relationship, but by then it was too late. The stallion, her old coltfriend, had fallen madly in love with this other mare, and they both had their relationship in secret. When Bon Bon found out, her heart was pulverized.

That's how their quick relationship seemingly ended. The stallion got to keep his new marefriend, and Bon Bon spent her days heartbroken. If Lyra could find the stallion involved, she would, but she hadn't even found out the guy's name. He apparently lived somewhere in Vanhoover, but that was the extent of her knowledge about him.

Presently, Lyra's ear twitches as she hears a distant steam whistle. This must have been the train Bon Bon had went on this morning, to get her to her "errands". Again, she didn't specify what they were, but Lyra feared it had something to do with her former coltfriend.

"Oh, I hope they don't try to make this relationship work. Still wanting to go out with somepony that cheated on you? Yeah, that'll work." She says to herself aloud.

She gets up and trots toward the train station. It starts to drizzle as the dark clouds loom overhead. The cool breeze that was against her back had suddenly turned into a gusty wind as she slowly walked. She picks up speed as she realizes most of her friends had gone inside their warm, cozy houses.

"I shouldn't have been out here for so long". She mumbles. "Why did Bon Bon have to leave?"

She looks back at the park bench, then at her house in the distance. She starts to back up.
"Maybe I should head back inside, for now." She nervously chuckles. "I'm sure Bon Bon will be back sometime soon. After all, her train's here."

She turns back and heads toward her home once more, preparing herself to see a wet-maned, teary eyed Bon Bon stepping through the doorway.

She lights a few candles, to help her see around the house due to the storm's darkness. Occasionally a flash of lightning would make itself known, but currently her only company was the sound of raindrops hitting the house's roof.

She could very well go to sleep to these soothing sounds, but decides against doing so. She needs to wait for her friend to return. Her friend would probably need some comfort after confronting her ex.

Many minutes pass, roughly a half an hour has gone by and no sign of the cream-colored mare turns up. The storm seems to have lightened up to just a gentle rainfall, and Lyra becomes concerned.

"Bon Bon, where are you?" she asks the thin air. Her hopes haven't diminished that her friend would return soon, and she would be there to provide support to her in her soon to arrive time of need.

"I probably heard the wrong train." she assured herself. "Soon I'll hear another whistle, and before long she'll be here.

More time passes, and no distant train is heard. It has been so long since Lyra got inside her home that her concern grows exponentially. Her loyalty had not faltered in the slightest.

"Where in Equestria is she?" she asked, peering through the raindrop covered window. It was still dark outside, either from the thunderclouds or the approaching night.

It had been two hours since the rain started, most of the clouds were now pushing their way east. Lyra could now confirm that the darkness was, in fact, due to the evening. The moon had not risen, at least not yet.

"It's a good thing I have these candles. It's still dark out."

She again peeked through the window, her hope diminishing by the minute. She saw the silhouette of what looked like her cream-colored friend slowly trotting toward the house. For the first time in almost a week, Lyra beamed a real, authentic, genuine smile.

She galloped toward the door and swung it open, causing it to nearly fly off its hinges. She wasted no time to finally get to see her best friend once again. She halted herself once she got through the doorway.

"Bon Bon! Oh thank Celestia you're here!" She smiled widely.

"Hey, Lyra..." Bon Bon spoke softly, looking down at the ground somberly as she walked.

Lyra's grin turned into a face of concern as she stared at her friend.

"W-w-what's wrong?" She asked, stuttering as she spoke.

"Oh, it's nothing, really!" Bon Bon assured, a small smile forming on her lips.

"What took you so long to get here? You've spent all day doing... whatever it was you were doing." Lyra asked.

"I'll tell you when I get inside." She said, walking through the yard. With that, she stepped past Lyra and went back into her humble abode.

They both stepped inside, and Lyra closed the door behind her. Bon Bon turned around and faced her longtime friend.

"Hey, uh... I'm sorry I couldn't be here sooner. My train got here around 4, but I was kinda stuck in the train station when that storm hit." Bon Bon explained.

"Oh, that's fine. Just got me a little worried is all." Lyra replied.

"Besides, I'm here now, and that's what matters!" Bon Bon chuckled, with a faltering smile.

Lyra almost knew why she took so long to get home, why it took so long for her to do her errands. She had to have went to try and fix the relationship with that stallion. And judging by the way she was acting, she wasn't successful.

"Oh! I almost forgot..." Bon Bon said, then pulling something out of her saddlebag. She handed it to Lyra. It was a little bag of assorted candies, some of Lyra's favorites.

"I got you those from the Vanhoover market. I picked the ones that I knew you'd like the most." Bon Bon said as Lyra examined the sugary treats.

"Aww... thanks, Bonnie. But I thought you went to Vanhoover to go see your stallion friend again." Lyra said.

"Him? No, I figured that relationship was doomed from the start." Bon Bon replied, shrugging it off.

The two mares hugged each other. Lyra could have sworn she saw a small drop of water dripping down Bon Bon's face. She figured it was from the rain she had to walk through to get here. She had her doubts about Bon Bon's story, but for the most part, either way, she seemed to be keeping herself together. And as long as her friend was okay, that's all that mattered.
