Solarstar, a unicorn that helped Princess Celestia and Luna get magic, meets Twilight Sparkle. The only problem is, no one has ever seen her because she is a legend. She has many questions for this starry mare that may get out of hand because of her expanded knowledge of magic. Does Solarstar's knowledge harness enough power to take the throne of Celestia?
Twilight Sparkle paced her library looking for new magic books that she could read. After searching shelf after shelf, she threw down her current books she was carrying. She grumbled and called for Spike.
"Spike? Spike!" she yelled. Spike lazily walked down the stairs. Rubbing his eyes he dazedly dropped down step after step. "What Twilight?" he looked at the clock that was hanging on the wall, " and seriously? What could you want, it's three in the morning!?" he said and Twilight was still pacing the floor. Clopping was heard through the walls of the library. Apple Jack was passing by the library when she heard the repeated clopping of Twilight.
"What in tarnation is Twilight doing up at this hour?" Apple Jack bursts through the door, leaving an empty apple cart outside. Twilight whips around to see the muddy looking Apple Jack trot towards her.
"I would ask you the same question Apple Jack." said Twilight. Apple Jack smiled and put one hoof over the other.
"Had a late, er, early mornin apple delivery to Mayor Mare. Ponies say she always has this craving for apples that nopony could ever imagine. Spike sat down on the last step and muttered to himself, "I think you both are crazy. Some dragons are trying to sleep!" Twilight overheard Spike.
"Oh Spike, where's your sense of an early start?" she asked with a smile. He huffed, "I left that in my bed. When I was rudely awakened by Twilight's pacing!" he argued and Twilight rolled her eyes. Apple Jack trotted closer to Twilight.
"Ok so what ARE you doing anyway? And why are you and all your pacing keeping poor restless Spike up?" she asked and then stared Twilight down. Twilight gave a sound of disgust. "Uuhhhhggg! I've run out of magical books to read! I've gone through every book in this library and I haven't found one that I haven't already read four times!" she said. "And plus, I usually do all of my magical experiments during the night while everypony is asleep." Apple Jack raised an eyebrow.
"Well why don't y'all just trot on over to the libr... Oh yeah. This is the library." Twilight raised an eyebrow. Spike yawned and continued his argument.
"Twilight, I think it would benefit everypony if you just give it up for tonight. Maybe we'll ask around tomorrow. Or send a letter asking Princess Celestia." Twilight shot up from her irritated self and smiled widely. Apple Jack nudged Spike.
"I don't like the looks of this, Spike. Looks kinda suspicious." Spike gave an approving nod. Twilight ran towards Spike and Apple Jack.
"Spike, take a letter." she cleared her throat and Spike got out a piece of paper and a quill.
"Wait, Twilight, don't you think that Princess Celestia, you know, might be sleeping now? I mean it is three in the morning you know right?" said Spike, but Twilight shook her head.
"No Spike, I need you to send this immediately." she said almost talking to herself. "This is a dyer need and I am about to die! No new magic means I will have to replay my schedule! That would throw off my entire year again! I plan for three hours a night of magical study and I can't study without any magic books that I haven't read cover to cover!" she explained. Apple Jack blinked widely.
"So what you're sayin is that you spend three hours a night devoted to studyin all your magic and magic books and such?" asked Apple Jack. The response from Twilight was a brash nod of the head.
"Eeyup." said Twilight and turned sharply to Spike. "Ready Spike?" she asked and Spike gulped.
"What about Obscure Unicorn History?" asked Spike. "Read it five times." replied Twilight. "Uh, The Elements?" "Twice." Spike was now getting a little bummed. "Derpy's Journey?" "Three times, wait what?" "Nothing! Ok uh, how about The Magical Legends of Solarstar?" asked Spike ready with quill in hand. Twilight started pacing again but stopped. "Did you say The Magical Legends of Solarstar?" asked a surprised Twilight. Spike put the quill down.
"Yeah, why?" "Because I thought I was the only pony who has heard about Solarstar. She was a mythical but magic mare who lived in the faraway castle with Princess Celestia. Legend has it that Solarstar gave Princess Luna an immortal potion that will keep a pony living forever and never aging. Soon Princess Celestia found out about it and forced Solarstar to give her the same life span of Luna." Apple Jack raised one hoof to stop Twilight.
"Are you sayin that our beloved Princess Celestia forced some little pony into giving her immortality? I feel bad for Solarstar but why in the world would Princess Celestia do such an evil thing?" she asked and Twilight had an answer.
"It was once said that Solarstar had once posed a threat to the kingdom because she was so powerful that one spell from her horn could effect everypony alive! Princess Celestia had to take some of her power away before things got out of hand and one night, Princess took half of the magic by a spell that Solarstar herself created. It was a terrible thing, but Princess Celestia said that she had to do it for the safety of all. As Solarstar was weakened, she summoned Luna to her side, asking for her to take the other half of her power. Princess Luna unwillingly took it and then..." Twilight trailed off.
Apple Jack and Spike had gotten increasingly closer to Twilight as they soaked up every last word that came form her mouth. "And then what happened Twilight?" asked Spike impatiently who was now off of his step walking closer and closer in anticipation. Twilight sat down.
"Huh, the funny thing is, I don't remember. Now where did I put that book? Maybe I can read it to you!" Spike shook his head.
"What? No! Do you remember where the book said that she was staying?" asked Spike. Twilight thoughtfully looked at him and then scratched her head.
"That's funny, I remember that part! I believe it was in Princess Luna's castle." Spike gasped with Apple Jack. "Hey, maybe we could meet her!" said Twilight cheerily. Spike lost his balance in terror and fell flat on his face. He got up and gave Twilight a crazed look.
"Twilight are you crazy!? You can't go there! It's all dark and creepy." Spike stuck out his tongue. "Blech, what about all of those creepy crawly things that lurk around in the dark? They could be poisonous, or worse... Pony eaters." he said now clutching Apple Jack's leg. Apple Jack shoved Spike off.
"Well Twilight, I have to agree with Spike, this journey seems a little far fetched and even Big Macintosh would agree that this is a bad idea."
"What does Big Macin..." Twilight was cut off by the insistent Apple Jack. "Well all I'm sayin is that you may wanna think twice before you count your apples before they've been harvested. What I'm sayin is that I think you should think twice before you go puttin yourself into some dangerous situation." said Apple Jack. "I gotta get going, I need to take a second load of apples to Sugar Cube corner before dawn." said Apple Jack closing the door behind her. Twilight blinked and then looked at Spike who had "I told you so" written all over his face. She pushed Spike aside and went for the window.
Both of them looked out the window and saw the beautiful moon. The imprint of Luna's head was still there and looking more stunning than ever. "I don't know Spike, Solarstar is pretty important and I'm sure that she would be glad to see a student of the Princess. Plus, I have no idea how the book ends! I don't think I even have it anymore."
Spike jumped off the window sill and started walking back up the stairs. He glanced back. "Well I don't know how she would handle a student of the Princess who wronged her." he said frankly and then went up the stairs hopping into bed. Twilight then watched the moon again. "Oh Spike, maybe you're right." she gave a little sigh and then dropped back down on all four hooves. She started walking towards the stairs but her back hoof caught on one of the books and fell on her face. "Woah!" she cried and then saw the book she had tripped over was The Magical Legends of Solarstar. Twilight stood up dumbfounded at how she had just so happened to trip over this one.
"Well this is quite interesting, now let's see how the story goes on shall we?"
Chapter 2- Spike rubbed his eyes and stretched, his back cracking multiple times. "Ahh, now that's more like it." He heard no more commotion from Twilight. He lazily went down the stares to get a book that was in a corner under dusty older books. He retrieved the book labeled A Dragon's Best. He opened the book, flipping the cover over exposing a dazzling blue jewel. "Aw man, I've been waiting for this for months! And now, it's ready. Aww and..." he looked over the jewel in hand and saw a tired, determined Twilight that was barely awake reading a book.
"Twilight! Did you spend all night reading that book?" Spike asked tenaciously walking towards her. Twilight flinched and breathed hard. She turned to him and sighed.
"Yes but remember that story about Solarstar with the two Princesses?" Spike nodded his head.
"Yeah but come on! You haven't slept!" he said. Twilight shut the book and trotted towards him.
"I know Spike but I finally found out what happened next to Solarstar!" Twilight said and she trotted out the door to the park. "Well Spike, it seems as though Solarstar didn't just give them the power of magic, but apparently magic itself! No alicorn could ever posses magic before and Solarstar made that possible. She was the one who created magic itself and she even helped out my hero Starswirl the Bearded! I mean now she could be my new hero of magic! But listen to this," Twilight opened her satchel up and took out the book and flipped through several pages. Spike yawned and then Twilight picked him up and sat him on her back.
"Solarstar was then caught helping Princess Luna train with magic by Princess Celestia. Then Princess Luna tried to spare the life of the magical mare by putting a barrier between Princess Celestia and Princess Luna. Princess Celestia got jealous of how Solarstar spent more time training Luna than she did with her. After that Princess Celestia banished Luna to the moon because of her jealousy and because Luna got way too powerful. Before Luna was banished, she became enthralled by training with Solarstar. She loved that pony so much and spent more time with her instead of raising the moon. Princess Celestia found out why she wasn't raising the moon and that's when Luna was banished." Spike was listening attentively but then was looking at the clouds in the sky.
Rainbow Dash zoomed up into the air and then did a whirling spiral in the air. She raced back down and then pulled up but hit the ground before she could pull up. "Look out!" she said but smacked the ground hard in a mud puddle. She shook her head and then got up. Twilight and Spike wee covered in a layer of mud. Rainbow Dash moved closer to Twilight and pushed the muddy hair out of her face. "Eh, sorry guys. I was trying a new trick, but it didn't work out so well. Soooo, what's new?" Rainbow Dash said trying to change the subject.
Twilight used her magic to clean herself and Spike off. "It's ok Rainbow Dash, nice trick though." Spike said.
"That's ok Rainbow Dash, well what's new is that we've found the old legend that adds on to the story of Princess Celestia and Princess Luna! A remarkable discovery actually." Rainbow Dash flew just above them.
"Well, I don't care much for the history stuff but that actually sounds kinda cool. So what's the addition?" asked Rainbow Dash. Twilight told Rainbow Dash about Solarstar and her role in how Luna was sent to the moon. Spike then interrupted.
"Wait, where did you say that Solarstar is residing?" asked Spike. Twilight looked at him and then at the sunny day around her.
"Well, it says that Solarstar lived in Luna's castle. That place is full of darkness and is actually in a secret hidden place somewhere behind Celestia's castle." said Twilight.
Rainbow Dash smirked at Twilight. "Yyeaahh, ok this story sounds a bit far fetched but you know. Whatever floats your boat, Twilight." Rainbow Dash was about to fly away but turned sharply back down and then flew directly towards Twilight, grabbing her by the mane. "Wait did you say Luna's castle?!" yelled Rainbow Dash in disbelief.
Twilight eyed her cautiously. "Uh, yeah, why?"
"Because! Don't you know?" Rainbow Dash asked releasing her mane.
"Well, no I don't." "The Wonderbolts preformed there! They perform there every year for show. I know that they'll be performing there next week! I can't miss out on an opportunity to go there. I'm sure that we could see them if we go!" explain Rainbow Dash. Spike raised an eyebrow.
"How do you know their schedule like you're one of their trainers or something?" asked Spike with a smile. Rainbow exhaled and then spoke up.
"Ok fine, I keep track of them because I'm a huge fan but come on who didn't know that already?" Spike then had an idea.
"Where are they now?" he asked with a grin. Rainbow Dash raised a hoof and then said, "Pshh, that's easy! Baltimare, at the Mare Stadium." Twilight blinked with wide eyed.
"Soo, Spike and I were planning to go there to ask Solarstar a few questions." she paused a moment. "Did you... wanna come along?" asked Twilight. Rainbow Dash squeezed her face in excitement.
"Oh my! I'd love to!" she raced in a circle in the sky and then came back down to the ground. "Wait!" she said getting close to Twilight.
"What?" asked Twilight backing up a bit. Rainbow Dash got in her face.
"What's the catch?" asked Rainbow Dash. Twilight now raised one hoof to stop her.
"You can come with us, but I kinda wanna talk to Solarstar so then I guess you could go and see the Wonderbolts perform by yourself, or you could take Spike but I don't know if he would want to go." said Twilight.
Spike ran closer. "Whoa, whoa, whoa. So you're saying I can choose to either go see the Wonderbolts or ask a mare about magic history?" he asked with a flat expression. Rainbow Dash smiled. "I'll go with Rawinbow Dash. You can ask away at all those questions while I enjoy a pretty awesome show with my good pal Rainbow!" said Spike and smiled nervously at Twilight.
She raised an eyebrow and then gave a side smile. "Ok fine. You guys can have fun while I find out answers that can change Equestria forever." exclaimed Twilight.
"Alright now what should we pack for the trip Spike?" asked Twilight with suitcase in the air by magic. Twilight frowned. "SPIKE!!" yelled Twilight. Spike was taking a nap on the window sill trying to rest while Twilight was packing. He turned over and then shrugged, falling back asleep. Twilight was getting aggravated. "SPIKE WAKE UP THIS IS IMPORTANT!!" screamed Twilight dragging him out of bed by her horn. Spike screamed and then was dropped on the floor.
"Twilight! What was that for?" asked Spike rubbing his head that had hit the floor of the library.
"I need to know what I should pack because there is... Wait I got it!" she said and then magically got a sack and filled it with books and food. She also packed a secret book that no one knew about.
"What's that book, Twilight?" asked Spike who was yawning and getting up off the floor walking towards her. Spike poked Twilight.
"GAHH!" screamed Twilight, "Spike! This isn't for your eyes. It's my... Journal! Er... Recipe book?" said Twilight and quickly packed it away. Spike backed off.
"Gees I just thought I would take a peek at your, 'recipe book.'" Spike used air quotes.
"No. No no no no no. It's just for me. And um, don't you want to start getting ready for the trip? I mean we leave today you know." said Twilight Sparkle. Spike sighed and then got a few random items for the journey. He snuck out of sight from Twilight and opened a heart shaped box. He opened it and saw something shining in his face. "Oh Rarity..." he said dreamily. He snapped back into reality and quickly shut the box and packed it away.
"Alright already. Let's go so we can get back." Spike said.
Rainbow Dash flew in with a tiny satchel on her back. "Ok. Who's ready to see the... WONDERBOLTS?!" said Rainbow Dash flying next to Twilight. Twilight took a deep breath and then looked at her.
"Well technically we are going to find Luna's castle and then I go ask Solarstar about the real story and then you guys can go see the Wonderbolts." said Twilight and Rainbow blinked without expression.
"Yeah yeah yeah, we know Twilight and then we are gonna go see the show while you ask questions about history we know." said Rainbow Dash. Spike nodded and then they were out the door when Apple Jack was passing by with Fluttershy.
"Well howdy y'all! Say, where you three goin at this hour?" Apple Jack examined them more closely, "Hey it looks like you all are goin on some fancy quest of types."
"Yeah, is there anything we ponies can do to help you out while you're gone?" asked Fluttershy quietly hoping to be able to help out while they were vacant. There was silence for a moment. "Any, you know, animals you want me to take care of while you're gone?" Fluttershy hinted. Twilight smiled and then shook her head.
"Sorry Fluttershy, I don't think so. Spike is coming with us on our journey." Fluttershy hung her head low. "Oh," Fluttershy said with a small "ok."
"Sorry Fluttershy but you know, we don't have anymore animals for you to take care of." Twilight responded.
"Hey do you mind tellin us where y'all are off to? If you don't mind, wait, you aren't goin to Luna's castle like you said yesterday are ya?" Apple Jack said looking at all of them cautiously.
"Oh we don't mind. We are off to see Solarstar in Luna's castle, yes Apple Jack. And you girls caught us just in time! We were about to leave now." Apple Jack gave a cold stare down with Rainbow Dash. Fluttershy was still looking down while Pinkie Pie skipped their way with Rarity by her side.
"Oh hey guys! Did you know that I just made Equestria's largest cupcake? Can you believe it?" Pinkie Pie said. Rarity rolled her eyes.
"Yes I think they all believe it Pinkie, that's the twelfth time you've said it." Rarity responded.
"Oh hey Rarity and Pinkie Pie, we were just on our way to Luna's castle and..." Rarity cut Twilight off.
"Wait you mean to tell us that you were going to leave us without telling us?" Twilight now had a twisted frown on her face. Rainbow Dash stopped flying and landed next to Fluttershy. She bit her lip and started to look away and whistle. Twilight was blushing furiously.
"Well, I don't know... We were just going to be gone a couple of days. It's really important!" said Twilight in distress. Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie started to tear up. Rarity was on the verge of bursting out in tears.
"You weren't even gonna say goodbye?" asked Pinkie Pie trembling with sadness. She sat down and her hair lost its curliness.
"I'm sorry Pinkie, Fluttershy, Apple Jack, and Rarity. I didn't mean to cause any harm or sadness."
"Yeah! Twilight had the best intentions and Spike didn't know anything about how you guys would react!" Rainbow Dash defended.
"I mean... Not even tell us?" Pinkie Pie said again.
"I'm sorry girls! I didn't mean to..." said Twilight but Rarity burst out I'm tears as Apple Jack turned harshly away from them.
"BWAAAWAWA!" cried Rarity as she ran away. Fluttershy cried and then got as low as a pony could ever get to the ground.
"Aw, Fluttershy. It's ok. We didn't mean it." said Raimbow Dash patting afluttershy on the back. She quickly got up and ran away. Pinkie and Apple Jack were left.
"Well if only you had told us before you planned on skipping out on saying goodbye or where you were going to us." said Apple Jack as back trotted back to the farm. Pinkie, although, sniffed and then slinked away with head low.
"It's ok. I forgive you." said Pinkie as she went away.
"I didn't mean it!" said Twilight as the last sight of Pinkie vanished.
"Twilight,"
"Yes Spike?" answered Twilight.
"I think you just broke your friends." Spike and Rainbow Dash nodded by each other and Twilight put her head down.
Chapter 4- Twilight sighed and looked at Rainbow Dash and Spike. "Well you guys don't hate me right?" asked Twilight. Spike shook his head.
"Nah, I don't think I could ever hate you Twilight." then Spike thought about it for a little bit. "Well actually unless you shaved my head in the night or took away my secret box but... I mean! I would never hate you Twilight. Heh heh." Spike laughed nervously. Twilight blinked in obscurity. Twilight shook her head. "Well, ok then. They'll come around. I'm sure that they'll understand later. This is important and I'm sure that they haven't told everypony when they leave town right?" said Twilight.
Rainbow Dash grinned cheekily. "Ssssuuuurrrreee Twilight." Rainbow said giving another smile to cover up the truth. Spike lowered his brow and gave a face of annoyance.
"Ok, well can we worry about this when we get back? We really need to get going!" Spike said breaking the uncanny moment. Rainbow Dash flew into the air and then came back down slowly.
"Are you guys comin or what?" asked Rainbow Dash trying to urge them to get going. Twilight sighed and then smiled.
"I'm ready!" Twilight pulled out a map that was tucked away in her bag. "Ok, it looks like the first course of action would be to... Ride the train to the castle." Rainbow Dash stopped flying.
"What?! We're taking some silly train when we could fly there?! Now THAT'S just wrong." she shook her head.
"Well too bad plus, you're the only pony who can fly in this group!" said Spike. Rainbow Dash signed. "Fine. We'll take the pretty, pony train."
Twilight smiled and rolled her eyes. "Ok then! Off to the station!"
After a long trot (or flight) to the station, Spike cracked his back. He had been riding on Twilight's back the entire trip and now he was getting sleepy. Twilight rubbed his head as they boarded the train.
"Don't worry Spike, you can sleep on the way there." said Twilight as he curled up against her and began to snore. Rainbow Dash watched the outside through the window.
"So are you excited Rainbow Dash?" asked Twilight smiling at her. She lifted an eyebrow and then returned her gaze out the window.
"Yeah, I guess it's not everyday a pony gets to go to Canterlot." she slowly blinked and then her eyelids followed. Rainbow Dash was now asleep against the window, steering her face on it.
Twilight giggled and tried to cover it up. She looked from side to side looking for other ponies. Twilight caught Vinyl Scratch and Moon Chill playing a game and trying not to wake the sleeping ponies in the train car.
"Psst!" called Twilight. Moon Chill and Vinyl Scratch turned around along with Seafoam who was beside them. "Oh! Sorry to interrupt but do you mind if I join you? My friends fell asleep." said Twilight trying to look as friendly as possible.
Vinyl Scratch nodded her head. "Who would have thought that there could be this many unicorns traveling to Canterlot at one time?" asked Seafoam, which made the entire car fill with laughter. Rainbow Dash nodded back off to sleep after being awakened by the laughter.
"Hmmm, I guess we should be more quiet huh." asked Twilight; all four of the ponies agreed.
"So what are you ponies going to Canterlot for?" asked Twilight.
Vinyl Scratch tilted down her shades, exposing her red eyes. She then looked at Moon Chill. Moon Chill smiled nervously.
"Well, I am helping Seafoam put on a dolphin show. Vinyl Scratch is in charge of the music for the show." Vinyl Scratch nodded and smiled, Seafoam smiled too. "After that though, I was asked on personal business to visit Princess Luna later." explained Moon Chill. Twilight blinked trying to register the business but could not find a reason for her to be going, but thought that she shouldn't ask questions.
"Hey Twilight, you should come to the dolphin show! It would be great! Princess Celestia is going to be there. She's making a guest appearance." said Seafoam. Hmm, I haven't got the time. Thought Twilight.
"I'll try to make it, but I also have some business to attend to while I'm here." said Twilight, then something hit Twilight.
"Wait, Moon Chill! Did you say that you were visiting Princess Luna here?" asked Twilight, wide eyed. Moon Chill lifted a brow, as always, she was very suspicious and observational. After a moment she smiled and answered.
"Yes, I did." Twilight thought for a moment. Perhaps she knows her way to the castle! Now it has to exist! Or maybe Princess Luna is just at the Royal Castle. Hmmm, I need more time! Thought Twilight, mashing every possibility that she could think of together into one giant plan. Twilight played it cool and tried to seem as though she wasn't interested. "Oh, so I guess you are meeting her at the Royal Castle, huh?" asked Twilight. Moon Chill had a tilted smile.
Twilight had remembered that Moon Chill came to Ponyville awhile back, but had an unknown background. Some had said that she came from Princess Luna's castle itself, but that was an old mare'stale.
Think, Twilight think! She can see right through you! Moon Chill had also been known to have a job that dealt with Canterlot often but came on business only back there. She studied the mind, stars, moon, planets, ponies, and occasionally the sea, which is very far off. Magic was her main study though, just as Twilight's was.
"That is classified, I'm sorry Twilight." said Moon Chill, secretively. Twilight shook it off and smiled. Seafoam had dozed off, and Vinyl Scratch had put her head headphones on and jammed out to some music. Moon Chill blinked and then joined in on sweet sleep. Twilight moved back over to Rainbow Dash and Spike.
"Goodnight everypony." she said, but her mind was still set on finding out what Moon Chill was hiding that was so classified. Twilight had a very sleepless night on the train.
