Prologue. First story, critique appreciated. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The sun rose once again on the coast of Florida, one of the few places still inhabitable in North America after the bombings. 'Etc' sat on a hill, staring off into the distance. He began to think. I remember everything that ever happened to me here, He reminisced. All the mishaps, all the adventures, all the crazed mutants, heck, even vampires! As he stared off into space, the memory began to play in his mind... "Okay, the vampires are going to be here soon, we need to get ready!"The leader of their small band shouted. Etc winced as a metal pole fell off the barricade and hit his foot. They had been fighting for hours, and appeared to be losing. Etc had ran out of sniper ammo and had resorted to his dual pistols, moving into the middle of the fight. Etc looked up from his cover behind the barricade, only to find that no vampires remained. The rest of the band noticed this and began to cheer. He only smiled. After the memory ended, Etc noticed that a dropship was flying towards him, with a flaming engine. His eyes went wide as he scrambled to his feet and dashed away as quickly as he could. He got away just in time as the dropship slammed into the ground where he had once stood, plowing a path through the dirt and coming to a stop nearby, it's black reflective coating shining dully in the pink and orange haze. This was a common sight in the wastelands, a crashing ship, but something seemed... off about it. there was no damage to anything but the engine, which appeared to have simply exploded. There was also the lack of people on-board, no pilots, passengers, anything. Etc then noticed a strange shape silhouetted against the sunrise, it appeared to be a mixture of a lion, eagle, deer, goat, and a dragon, a...chimera, of sorts. This was all too familiar for him, as that shape tormented him wherever he went. Reflected in windows, floating in the sky, even engraved in boxes. Etc sighed soundlessly, and began to walk back to his safehouse. Etc's safehouse was an old coast guard base, barricaded with scrap iron that was flecked with red, old but strong. He walked inside and set his pack down on the table, taking out the various electrical parts he had scavenged before sunrise. He then attached them to a half-broken device lying on a workbench, with blueprints sitting next to it. The device looked similar to what would happen if you combined a pressure gauge and a bomb, and then had a wrestler slam it into an anvil. From what he could figure out, it would be able to restore a part of the wasteland to an oasis of life. One more piece, he thought, annoyed. He turned around to go scavenge for it, but paused when he noticed something lying on the table. It was the piece he needed, but with that chimera engraved on it, with the letter 'D' below it. He thought this was a little strange, but he was used to strange things like this now. Etc plugged it into the machine and pressed the 'on' switch. ---------------------------------------------------------------- There! hope you like it! :D > Chapter One > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Story of 'Mutey.' Chapter One: A Strange World This chapter is the result of insomnia on a saturday night. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The device did nothing at first, but soon the gauges began to flicker on the sides, and a thrumming noise filled the room, similar to a cat's purr. As as the arrows on the gauges rose, plants quickly grew where Etc stood, and began to overtake the room. Creeper vines inching up the walls, grass spreading on the ground, among countless other species of plants.. All of a sudden, It stopped. Every single plant shriveled and died within seconds, coating everything with dead leaves and detritus, all colored some shade of brown. Then, a rainbow light shot out of the machine, the room seemed to bend at impossible angles, then everything turned a brilliant white before fading to black. ------------------------------ Rainbow Dash Rainbow was floating on a cloud, snoring softly, when a large, booming noise shook her awake. Peeved, she looked up, and what she saw caused her jaw to hang open. The sky seemed to be rippling, lights flashing seemingly at random, and a Pegasus pony wearing strange clothing shot out of one of those lights almost as fast as a sonic rainboom, and slammed into her cloud house with a muffled thump. "What in the hay was that?!" She shouted as she then shot towards her house, both checking to see whether the strange pony was hurt, and to see if her house was damaged. ------------------------------ Etc Etc opened his eyes slowly, but the world refused to focus. There was a cyan blob above him, with a second multicolored blob on top of it. He blinked a few times to clear his eyes, then immediately did a double take. Staring straight at him was a cyan colored horse with a mane that had every color of the rainbow as well as... wings? What on earth is THAT?! He mentally screamed. Eyes wide, he took a step back, willing the horse-thingy to leave him alone. It then said "what's the matter? never seen a pegasus before? pretty strange, seeing as your one yourself." After that, it chuckled as Etc looked behind him and found out that she hadn't been lying. He then began shaking, and thought: I've finally snapped. Ten years in the wasteland. Ten years, and I've just snapped. Etc then had a revelation. If he was a pegasus in this twisted world, that means he could fly, and get away from the other pegasus. He lifted off and flew away as fast as he could, which is to say, not fast. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ That's the end of Chapter one. I love cliffhangers, they make me feel evil :3. > Chapter Two > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Story of 'Mutey' Chapter Two: Ever Free. Glad some ponies like it! *flutteryay*(Edit: only dislikes :(. but I meant the commenters :D) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Etc made it about two yards before his wings gave out and he began to plummet towards the ground. As the ground approached, he desperately attempted to pull out of the dive, accidentally stabbing one of his hooves with the katana strapped to his back. Why don't I have a sheath for that thing? And WHY CAN'T I FLY?! As these thoughts rushed through his head, he attempted to scream, failing miserably. Just before he hit the ground, a cloud floated under him, and he landed on it. Wait, I'm on a cloud? Etc looked up at where he had fallen, noticing that it was a cloud too, albeit in the shape of a house. I suppose that makes sense. He winced at the stab wound on his hoof, knowing that he wasn't going to die. At least, not yet. Funny how I've come to refer to them as hooves... He mused, chuckling silently under his breath. As he cleaned and bandaged the stab wound, he noted that the cloud was floating towards a forest. Rainbow Dash As the strange pegasus flew off, she watched him make a few yards and then suddenly drop out of of the sky, disappearing from view. Dash's eyes went wide, and she galloped to the edge of her house. "I hope he's okay..." she muttered under her breath. Dash knew how much broken wings could hurt, ever since the crash about a year ago. She watched him get stabbed by that giant knife stuck on his back, and land on a stray cloud heading towards the Everfree forest... Wait, the Everfree?! Without a word, she shot off after him, leaving a technicolored streak behind her, fading slightly as she moved farther away. He is having some bad luck today, she thought as she zoomed through the air. Etc Something about the forest seemed off to Etc. Maybe it was the trees, or the clouds that seemed to hang over it ominously, but something was definitely strange about it, but he couldn't quite put his finger-hoof?- on it. A shout ripped Etc from his thoughts, and he turned his head. The same rainbow-maned pegasus from earlier was shooting towards him, shouting something unintelligible at him. As Etc tried to decode what she was screaming at him, the cloud dissolved under his feet, right over the strange forest. ...sh*t.
