The memories of her childhood playing in her minds eye.
After going through the years of her life, she saw the past three hours with a sense of grief.
Three hours ago...
I just announced my fake plan to Celestia, the plan was to take Canterlot, harvest love and enslave Ponykind.
That was only the convenient lie to cover my true intention. I mean sure, it was a third true, but the ponies didn't need to know that we were only here for one reason... Right? I just made up the other two because I wanted it to seem more complex, evil and fearsome. Sure I could've told them I just needed food for my hive... But where's the fun in that?
We're starving and fading, hence the holes in our legs and the loss of manes from most every changeling as well as the thinner physique... But! This plan is going to change all of that, I swear it! We'll have enough love to last us for a couple years, and we'll be stronger and faster, not to mention we'll look nicer too... And after we pull this off the ponies will be so scared that they'll leave us alone and maybe even surrender. Though I don't need an empire, it would be nice... And don't even start on the amount of love these ponies are capable of! Just Shining Armor alone gives enough love for four changelings to be fed for a week in a day! Can you believe that!?
Oh! I've been staring for a bit!
"-- and now that you have shown yourself, I can protect my subjects from you!!" Celestia bellows as she prepares a blast with her magic, I counter with my own blast... A little unprepared for the strength behind it. I mean she doesn't look like a powerhouse does she? Anyway I adjust my power to her level and overpower her, which was rather easy if I do say so myself. Since I took all of Shinings love for myself, as I couldn't get away from him to give any to my subjects... I had quite the store of power, enough that I could easily subdue the princess, apparently...
As she fell her crown came off, I'm sure all the ponies present are having one of those moments of shock where everything is slow as a snail. It landed rather nicely, bouncing and clinking with a tone of finality. For a second everypony just stared, then those annoying ponies who prepared the wedding came running to Celestia's side. I turn to Cadance, she looks shocked, to say the least... She looked haggard, starving and tired. I on the other hoof was pristine, full, and well-rested.
We started to argue, this took awhile, I turn toward Celestia again and lean in, "you know I thought this would be harder princess... I guess it's all over now..." I giggle as she glares daggers at me. I walk away and up to Cadance, she is still standing in the same spot, glaring at me with poison and hate, I cringe inwardly, hate hurts. It doesn't hurt if we feel it or if we eat it, it hurts if we see it, especially if it's with hurt and resent. The eyes are the window to the soul... They say, and how true those words are, since for a changeling, looking into the eyes of another who hates them is like getting burned by a match... to your muzzle.
"You know Cadance, if you would of stayed in those caves like a good mare, none of this would've happened." I state, calmly."Celestia would be unharmed and your husband would be yours as soon as we left..." I tell her quietly, angry with her for ruining my game.
"What do you mean Shining would be mine again? And what do you mean as soon as you left? I thought you were planning on taking over and enslaving everypony!?" She yelled as she poked her hoof at me.
"What I mean is this is all an act, PRINCESS!!" I seethe as I lean in,"you just had to go and escape! Didn't you! I was this close to wrapping this up! And you come in and ruin it! Just as I was going to say that I had to wait, that this was too soon! You would have been released after we got what we came for! You would have been told what was going on and you would have been compensated for all this! We were going to build you a castle and give you enough treasure to outshine Canterlots treasury, and you would have the protection of every changeling under my care! Do you know how bad you messed up my plans!?" I rant in her face.
"I never wanted to hurt anypony Princess! All I wanted was a little fun! Is that to much to ask!?" I yell as I continue that thought...Just a little fun for a starving people that are broken and fading!? All we need is the emotions of you ponies! That is all we need to survive... We don't need food or water, just love! Love, it's the most powerful emotion of all, and a changeling that has even a little love can survive for a few days... It... It's in short supply these days... "You might've messed up my only chance to save them... " I whisper as my anger is replaced with bitterness and sorrow as my mask fell.
She stood there for a minute, taking in my words at a snails pace... "Wha-what did you say!?" She stuttered as she stared at me with a disbelieving look."Did you just say that this was a joke!? That this is all an act!?" She sputtered.
"I said this is an act not a joke... and you would've gotten a castle and treasure and my changeling army as a guard... But now that's all out the window because of what you did. Now I don't know what to do! I didn't think you would get out. Those caves are a maze!" I hung my head as i said every word and meant it. But it appears the princess wouldn't believe me.
"You can't fool me! Trying to make me underestimate you won't work! You evil lying witch!" She fired a blast that I barely dodged due to our close proximity."You lock me up, take my husband and brainwash him! Impersonate me and try to take my wedding day from me! Then you send twilight down to that crystal prison. And you taunt her!? Who does that!? Not you that's for sure!" She stomped her hoof and seethed at me. I cringe as I glance into her eyes, her hate had doubled in stature during her rant.
I stare at her, for a minute we stare... Me nervous at her reaction, for it all rode on her next move, her staring at me, her hate fading as she apparently thought about my offer.
"I-I will-" she started. Then we heard hooves outside...
"Please just go with the act, it's almost over anyway..." I say as I step back and . At first she struggles but realizes its futile. I smile a little at her, it's bitter and small, she pauses and looks at me."This was fun, but I guess everything comes to an end huh?" "Do me a favor and not tell anyone about our talk, except celestia, I have an image to keep after all." I say as I slip back into the 'Mean Queen' mask.
She gains a fierce look and shakes her head,"you can't fool me, your mind magic won't work on me! Leave me and Shining alone you bug." She says as I shake my head... Oh well, at least I tried yeah?"As soon as twilight gets here!..."
Boom... The doors to the room opened and in walked a group of changelings surrounding the elements.
"Cadance, we're sorry..." One of them said solemnly.
"Ah, this is just a perfect day!"
I sing a bit, finishing my song from earlier...
Then I hear Twilight whispering to Cadance, I turn and see her nuzzling Shining Armor, then out of pure love her weakened magic gives off a love spell... All others present watch the magic heart float in front of the stallions face, split into two with a *POP*
He shakes his head to clear it,"Ugh... What happened? Cadance? What happened to you?" He asks as he notices her state."Twily? Princess Celestia? What's going on here?"
"Hi! Queen Chrysalis took control of your mind and trapped Princess Cadenza and Twilight in a cave and was about to marry you when they came bursting in, and then the fake Cadance laughed and told us a evil plan and then there was a FWOOSH!!! And then the fake Cadance turned into Queen Chrysalis and she knocked out celestia, and then we went to go get the elements to beat her, we fought like FIFTY changeling and we beat them but then we got captured and brought here and Cadance used some weird spell and you woke up and asked what happened then I gave a big long explanation then you and Cadance used- mmph!" Rainbows hoof stopped Pinkies mouth from talking their ears off.
Everypony stared at Pinkie for a second, then after he composed himself Shining said
"I only got half of that, but apparently you have a lot to answer for... Queen Chrysalis was it?" I wince as his fury grew to double what Cadances was.
"Shining your ok!" He stumbled as Cadance forced her hug on him.
"Of course I'm ok! Your here aren't you?" He said with a smile. Then he turns and tries to attack me, only the tip of his horn glowing."gah! I can't... I'm too weak!" He gave up trying and panted a bit.
"My love will give you strength!" Cadance says as she moves forward and places her horn against his,"here let me give you my love..."
"Nice sentiment, but it won't work." I'm soon corrected however, by a bright light as the two float a bit. Seeing this and feeling something coming I dive towards my closest subjects, hiding them from whatever is coming as they huddled into my embrace.
Seeing this her eyes widened. "N-no! Shining no stop! Please not that much, stop you'll kill them! STOP!!" Cadance yells as she tries to pull away to avoid blood on her hooves.
I turn toward her and see she's afraid of what is about to happen, I smile at her "I told you to go along with it? And didn't I tell you it would be over in a bit?" I resolved to myself as I told her that I would go happy that I could protect at least four of my subjects.
"Goodbye young ones, I love each and every one of you..." I say with finality.
"Goodbye Queen, we all love you too." They bow their heads and wait for the inevitable.
"N-no not like this, not like this! It can't end like this! Chrysalis! Run! Get away! You'll all die! Ru-"
"Shh, it's alright, after you escaped i thought this would happen. Shining Armor is currently consumed by fury and hate. His attack will send us flying to who knows where. We might land somewhere safe like a lake or we could hit the side of a mountain. It doesn't matter." As I said this she burst into tears. I looked to my right and saw the elements transfixed by the spectacle. Unaware of our words and Cadances cries to stop.
"Is what you told me true!? Were you going to do all those things?" She asked desperately, my time was running out, I could feel it, so could she.
"Every word, and the reason I came here is because my subjects are starving, were fading from existence... We needed love or we would've died out. And we're alright with this, just let it happen and nopony will know about this, just you and me." "Goodbye Princess, May life find you well." I said as the shield of love and hate came at me.
"NOOOO!!! CHRYSALIS!" Cadance screamed as she felt every impact on the magic shield, every changeling life thrust away from Canterlot into the horizon.
As the spell wiped over every pony, it erased their memories of the changeling attack, all except Cadance, Chrysalis and her changeling kin...
As Chrysalis lay in the mud. She thought of what she had done in her life. Being an immortal was an experience entirely different from before. In her childhood she was a happy filly. Always having imaginary adventures of pirates and sea monsters, knights and dragons, treasure hunters and ancient ruins. Playing with paper hats and toy swords. Letting the world around her be anything she desired, a rock could be a compass or ancient relic. A tree could be a fortress or crows nest, a tent could be a castle or cave! All of this and more were at her disposal and the only things that could stop her were her imagination and dinner-time.(which always tasted new and great even if she had tasted it before, as is common with a mothers cooking.) Playing the days away until early winter when she had to stay inside the house more often in fear of frostbite, which for a flutterpony was like getting a broken leg or cracked horn. She could play outside like any other foal, it was just that over the last few years winter had been getting worse, mom and sis said it was because windigoes were appearing more often, chrysalis didn't care for that. She just wished they would stop soon. This was getting annoying. She wanted to play in the snow! She wanted to make snow ponies and lines of snow butterflies. She wanted to get just cold enough and drink a hot cup of chocolate, feel it warm her from the tips of her wings to the bottom of her hooves. She wanted to play with her friends and cousins, having snowball fights and going sledding. Winter was the best!
But then something happened... One day while she was sledding with her friends everything suddenly turned to fudge, well at least thats what it looked like.(upon closer inspection the fudge only reached the ground or hung on the trees, this led the flutterponies to believe that something had turned all the snow in a mile wide radius into chocolate.) as she and her friends curiously prodded and wondered what it was, they heard a commotion coming from the town. As they galloped into town what they saw confused them. For before their eyes was the weirdest creature they had ever seen, and this was coming from ponies who were friends with seaponies! This creature was a hodgepodge of animals and monsters. There were signs of pony, dragon, lion, goat, and even griffon and deer too! The foals stared in befuddlement as the creature caused untold things to happen in the town, all while rambling about cupcakes and the various shades of pink. After hearing the creature voice it's opinion on the color chartuse. The colts and fillies gathered themselves and looked to the town...
What they saw horrified them. For while they stood and watched the creature ramble and snap it's various limbs, the town was in chaos! There were quite a few jello buildings, a few made of what smelled like pumpernickel and Chrysalis home appeared to be made of fruitcake. The ponies of the town were in no better shape, some were shrunk down while others were grown to behemoth sizes. Some that stood up to the creature were turned to plants and various furniture. Others were crazy or being forced to do some inane act endlessly.
As the children watched Chrysalis gasped when she saw her mother and sister exiting the house and looking at their poor town in panic.
"MOTHER QUEEN!" A rush of hooves came closer to her as she was interrupted on thinking of her past.
Opening her eyes she saw the source of the voice as one of the four she had protected. Lifting her head as she came closer, she lightly nuzzled the other in greeting."Mother Queen are you alright?" Scarlet asked quietly."Are you hurt anywhere?" She asked while looking her queen over.
"Sigh, I'm fine Scarlet. Just sad is all." Chrysalis answered quietly."Sad that so many are gone, lost or hurt. And mad at Discord for putting us in this sorry state. Happy that you are alive, and that at least I could save four."
"It's good to see your not hurt Chrysalis, I don't know what we'd do without you. You're everything to us." Scarlet stated with emotion that surprised herself."Sorry about the way that came out, I was just so scared!" Scarlet said as she quivered in place.
Chrysalis blinked as she saw her changeling shivering in fear, eyes snapped shut against the world, shifting her weight so that she was on her stomach, she rested her head on Scarlets."Your okay now, I'm here." She said as she realized just how shaken she was as well. As she sit there comforting the changeling, she thought on how it felt to see Cadance scream and cry out her name as she careened out the window. How after seeing those eyes fill with fear for HER life and those of her subjects, and sensing her desperate need to get away from the one she loved. And how as she flew out the window Cadances eyes were filled with sorrow and what looked like loss. She thought of what that meant to her. And what might have been if discord hadn't ruined everything.
"What do you think of me Scarlet?" The question slipped out of her mouth before she could stop it, her breath hitched in her throat. Her eyes went wide as she realized her slip.
After taking a moment to blink away some tears, look at her comforter and process the question she answered. "Wha-what? What do you mean? You are my Queen. You take care of and guide us. You protect and teach us, and you help raise the newborns as often as you can." She answered steadfastly, not understanding her leaders question.
Looking away Chrysalis replied."I... I-I mean after this whole wedding scheme, after losing so many, what do you think of me now?" Chrysalis asked forlorn."Do you hate me now for leading you all to this... ?
"M-my Queen? Are you ok? Of course I don't hate you! You do so much for us, telling our children stories and making sure they know right from wrong. Healing those who are injured when you can, and protecting our lands from invaders along with the guard. Even if this mistake was big, it isn't something to hate you for. Your a good Queen. Don't let this get you down. Now, we should get back to the Hive yes?" As Scarlet said this she gained conviction.
Chrysalis slowly started to smile as she listened to her changelings words."Yes. Yes you're right, we should get back to the Hive. But first, how are Buzz, Zix, and Velvet?" She said with rising confidence, though still tired from her ordeal."If they are hurt I'll heal them here as best I can then we'll see about getting home."
"Well Buzz is knocked out with his head stuck in a bush and Zix is slighty wounded, cuts and bruised chitin from falling through tree branches. Velvet has her hoof caught in a high branch and can't get down with out getting hurt, and I'm pretty sure her shoulder and ankle are dislocated as well." Scarlet listed off while looking back in their direction.
"Well at least they're alive, Velvets leg worries me. It won't be fun to relocate it, we might have to put her to sleep before we put it back into place, then we have to make a sling... How are her wings?" Chrysalis spoke while going over the process needed for setting dislocated joints safely.
"Her left wing is caught in a branch, but her right is fine. Like I said, she can't get down without hurting herself." Scarlet explained.
"Well, that's a problem. Well have to fly up there and get her wing unstuck before getting her leg out of the branches." Then we can take care of her and Zix together." Chrysalis explained.
As she said this, she got up and motioned for Scarlet to lead the way. While walking Chrysalis took in her surroundings. Realizing she recognized the area she gasped and quickened her pace... They were in the Everfree, and the sun was going down.
As soon as she touched the ground she skittered away from him, to the far corner of the room by her aunt. She huddled away from everything under her aunts soft white wing, she felt safe here, under Auntie Celestia's wide white wing. Away from the madness around her she just wept, she cried her eyes out and sobbed her heart dry.
Nothing moved except for the rising and falling of unconscious chests as they lay there, and all the while she cried and shivered. Huddled into a safe place... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cadance woke up feeling drained, she opened her eyes when she heard concerned voices mumbling about something. What she saw made her feel safe, it was the back of Aunties head. She closed her eyes and snuggled closer to her aunt, not wanting to move away in fear of being alone. She shuddered as she remembered the feelings of helplessness and terror as she watched Chrysalis getting flung out the window, forelegs gripping four cowering changelings as she smiled in her direction, she remembered Chrysalis giving her a nod before she went out of view. And worst of all, she remembered sensing Shining Armor's joy as lives were snuffed out and erased, not even a trace of magic left behind.
Cadance whimpered in fear of the one she loved, the one who took pleasure in killing others. Covering her head with her hooves she cried out her sorrow, she shuddered and wept as she lay under the wing. A male voice came closer, she pulled away. It asked a question, she whimpered and cringed. She felt a hoof touch her, she cried out and hid deeper in the safety of her Aunties wing. Other voices... females; started yelling, she shivered in fear.
The voices started fighting, she couldn't make them out trying to yell over each other. Then a immensely loud voice yelled, she recognized this voice, it made her feel peaceful and calm. She remembered indigo fur and turquoise eyes, a kind smile and stern voice."A-a-auntie L-luna?" She whimpered, the voices died immediately.
"Yes dear?" Luna said quietly, she trotted closer and put her head down to her niece."What is it?"
"C-can you lay by m-me... please?" Cadance whispered with a shaky voice.
"Of course Cadance, anything..." Luna shifted her head,"Leave, she needs space and quiet." Luna said firmly, brokering no argument. The sound of many hooves leaving signaled they were alone.
Cadance finally uncovered her head, opening her eyes to see a worried and concerned luna looking down at her. She looked around and saw they were still in the throne room, it was night time and there was no sign of any other ponies except her aunts. She looked to her right and noticed Celestia's calm slow breaths, she was still unconscious but her wounds were healed."Auntie Celestia? Wake up Auntie." Cadance softly nudged her aunt.
"That won't work my niece, I have been trying all day to wake her a-" Luna was cut of as Celestia yawned and looked around slowly.
"Mmm, what happened? Why am I in the throne room?" Celestia continued to look around until she spotted a wide-eyed Luna to her left, suddenly she felt a movement under her wing. Looking down she gasped at the sight she saw. A disheveled and scrawny Cadance, tears puddled around her and shivering uncontrollably.
"BY MY MOTHER FAUST!!? What happened Cadence!?" Celestia tightened her wings hold around Cadance, looking at a still wide-eyed Luna she asked."Luna what happened too her!? Do you know?" Luna shook her head while trying to get her mouth to work.
"H-how did that work?" Luna asked in a higher tone then normal."I tried everything to wake you up and all it takes is a nudge!?" Luna exclaimed."Of all the stupid things I've seen, that's the stupidest of them... Next to Blueblood in a tutu after loosing a bet." The last part was mumbled quietly."Cadance, how did you do that?" Luna questioned.
Cadance poked Luna's side."Like that." She said quietly, calming down with the antics of her auntie. She was no longer having a fear attack.
"Cadance what happened to you?" Celestia asked after quirking an eyebrow at luna."You weren't like this yesterday, and you only have a week till the wedding. What happened to you!?"
Cadance once more remembered the events of the past week, she cringed and froze in place. Celestia noticed this as did luna, they shared a concerned glance. "I-- you-- there--..." Cadance croaked out. She was silent for a good while, the only sound the clock above the throne room door. She shuffled nervously as she tried to find her words."What's the last thing you remember Auntie?" She said with difficulty.
"I was walking to the archives to practice the ceremonies lines, why?" Celestia asked nervously, something was wrong. What could have happened to Cadance overnight to make this happen? And why were they in the throne room?"Is something wrong dear?"she asked nuzzling Cadance.
"And you Auntie Luna?" Cadance asked quietly.
"I was just about to go too sleep after setting the moon and reading a bit of the latest Daring Do novel. Why, what's wrong?" Luna asked feeling Cadance' shaking worsen as she talked."Cadance dear, what is it?" She asked getting fearful, concern for her niece growing worse. And she was afraid of the answer she would get, why was Cadance like this? What happened?
"T-t-that was a W-WEEK ago." Cadance said quickly."A week ago right now!" She'd said looking to the clock."I remember talking to you about that book, you were reading 'Daring Do and the Impossible Ship',and you left off at chapter twenty-one. Right where Ahiuzhotl stole the ship and escaped from Dr. Where's cave laboratory with Daring stowed away in the cargo hold!" Cadance said with a sense of growing dread.
"WHAT!!?" Luna yelled out in surprise."How do you know this Cadance? I haven't told anypony anything from that book!" Luna was dumbfounded, how could her(wonderful) niece know about a book that wasn't out yet while she had the only copy?(signed by A.K. Yearling herself!)
"As I just said, it was a week ago. You just can't remember the last week." Cadance said with a nervous voice."Auntie Celestia? Are you okay?" She asked. Looking at her aunt as she felt a slight shiver from her.
'What could make us forget an entire WEEK!?' Celestia asked herself.'And what could have happened to Cadance to make her so weak?' Celestia wrapped Cadance in a tight hug with her wing, nuzzling her repeatedly."Cadance what happened to you!? You look like your about to-to..." Celestia started sniffling as she fawned over her niece.
"I-I know Auntie, I look horrible, but starving myself for a week is my own fault. I was stubborn and wouldn't accept the food they gave me." Cadance mumbled the last part, but due to their closeness the sisters heard her.
"Cadance, dear? Who's they?" Luna asked concerned.
Cadance was quiet for a while as she contemplated telling her aunts. Finally after a minute she asked...
"Aunties, are or were there other ponies besides the Three Tribes, Alicorns, Seaponies and Zebras?" Cadance asked carefully.
Chrysalis watched as her family called out her name, not straying far from the fruitcake walls of their home for fear of what was going on around them and not hiding inside for fear of Chrysalis' safety.
She watched as a squadron of giant flying banana cream pies came soaring low over the village at the snap of a claw, dive-bombing houses and unsuspecting ponies...
She watched as the creature cackled with sheer glee at his insanity turned reality... She watched as her mother who had raised her and her sister on a nurses wage and her sister who just turned eight-teen were soon to be engulfed in a creamy doom...
Chrysalis just moved... All she could hear were the creatures cackles of glee as more pies landed... All she could see was the look of panic her mother had as she moved to shove her sister out of the way, her sister had mixed look of relief at spotting her and shock as she was shoved away from under a huge shadow.
All she could feel was fear for her mothers safety... Then the pie hit...

Looked around and noticed that by the position of the sun, that they had been walking for half an hour and that there were three hours till night fall."Um, I'm sorry if my question was to personal. I was just trying to make conversation." Scarlet said nervously looking at the ground.
"Hmm? I'm sorry, I was lost in memories." Chrysalis said shaking the thoughts from her head.
"Memories of when?" Scarlet asked curiously, nervously wondering if she just crossed a line.
"Of Discord's rise to power." She said simply, grinning on the inside as she decided to have a little fun with Scarlet.
"Last year? What happened last year?" Scarlet asked confused. Trying to remember anything significant happening at home during that time. She came up with nothing.
"His first rise." Chrysalis was barely able to hold her grin back at the look of slack-jawed awe on Scarlet's face.
"B-but that was three-thousand years ago!" Scarlet said in a higher tone of voice than was her normal. She knew that her queen was at least as old as Celestia,(one-thousand five hundred) but this was preposterous! Her queen had been around since the beginning of changeling and Equestrian history!
Chrysalis chuckled at her changeling's reaction. She rarely told anyone her true age, it was always a laugh to see the reactions."I was eight when he appeared, it was complete chaos all over the world from what I heard..." Chrysalis trailed off when she noticed Scarlet drooling. 'I think I broke her.'
Walking up to Scarlet, Chrysalis leaned down and looked into Scarlet's dazed stare. Getting an idea she went behind the changeling and hugged her tight.
Getting no reaction, Chrysalis started to really worry. 'Was it really that shocking? Am I getting that old?... Is she even breathing!?' Chrysalis panicked at that last thought. Quickly bringing the smaller changeling to her ear her eyes widened when she didn't hear the rushing of air that was breathing.
"SCARLET!!!" Chrysalis shouted right into her ear, startling the smaller being into screaming and then taking a Huge breath of air.
"AHH-'cough' 'gasp'" Scarlet hung limply in her queen's grip. She looked up to see Chrysalis looking at her worriedly.
"Are you okay? You weren't breathing for a bit there." Chrysalis said concerned, tilting the changeling this way and that looking for any signs of oxygen deprivation.
"Um... I'm fine Mother Queen." She said embarrassed. She felt like a foal right now, being fussed over wasn't a new feeling, as she had been fussed over when she WAS a foal. But, being fully grown and an independent mare. She was a bit out of sorts at the moment, getting fussed over by an immortal queen three times your size can make you feel like a foal again. Her queen was older, smarter and bigger than her.
Chrysalis hugged Scarlet once more and set her down. "Don't do that again, you scared me!" Chrysalis scolded the maroon cheeked changeling. Then sighed and nuzzled her.
Scarlet froze up after the hug, and nearly went into shock again when her queen nuzzled her. "'Cough' um... My Queen? Are you ok?
