Will fill out later.

To be talented in magic is a rare gift, rarer still in a pegasus. For Featherfall, each spell comes at a cost: one of her precious feathers.

Part of Canterlot's elite Magical Crimes Unit, Featherfall struggles to solve the disappearances of two well-liked mares and the brutal murder of a renowned candle-maker, burned alive in his own shop. But, as the facts of the case emerge, Featherfall finds her own family implicated for the grisly crime and unearths hints of a far greater horror.

2199023 I Loved Sanctuary of Lights (especially Stardust, who inspired me to imagine a race of creatures descended from a Pegasus hero cursed by Insomnia) thanks for replying!:pinkiehappy:

2199083

Glad to hear it! If you liked Sanctuary I think you'll like this one.

2199091 I hope so... Oh who am I kidding, I know I will! just one question... is Sanctuary set before the events of the show? and if so, how long?

Read chapter 1, good so far...

And Chapter 2 officially seals the deal!:pinkiehappy:

2199209

A comment in chapter 6 (The Fire in Her Words) shows that at the very least it takes place after the series premiere (Because Luna has been redeemed)

2199234

Glad you liked it n.n more chapters soon to come. I'm very excited about how this story turned out

2199242 Keep up the good work, and thanks for clearing that up.:pinkiehappy:

Finally. It is here! I will read later but cant wait. Once done with other story ill read this. I expect greatness.

...So Featherfall's family hates her because she's a pegasus and not a unicorn?
Harsh.
I secretly hope they all die or they're guilty or something...

2199514

Haha, well hopefully it will live up to expectations. I certainly have enjoyed writing it

2202256

I have never hated a character so much as I grew to hate some of her family members.

2204426 Thanks. you know, it's an interesting idea, considering pegasi feathers may actually have magical properties in the show.

2204441
Yeah, the idea that a pegasus can trail a magicky-looking aura was what got me thinking about the potential magical application for a pegasus character. That and the cloudwalking abilities.

2204695 That, and remember the Hearts and Hooves Day episode?

2204713

Hmm, thinking back, did they use one of Scootaloo's feathers in Sweetie Belle's potion? I don't really recall. I mostly remember the song. :twilightsheepish:

2204942 That's Right! the potion called for Pegasus Feathers.

Just wanted to say that the story is amazing and to thank you for sharing it with us

2206059

Thanks! I'm glad you are enjoying it

I think the "I did it!" moment in chapter 3 was probably my favorite moment in the story. Hard to say for certain though. Something about it really struck a chord with me. :twilightblush:

2207415
Yes :twilightsheepish:
Also I should say that illustration in the end of chapter 3 adds a lot to perception of Featherfall - she is adorable

continue please.

Also, have you ever heard of a fic called "It's a dangerous business going out your door?"

While I'm the wrong person to advise this:

Don't burn yourself out. Daily updates are awesome, but don't feel like you must. This story is great so far, and I would hate to see you put quantity over quality.

2214135

I appreciate the concern but you have no need to worry

I prefer to post stories that are "guaranteed complete". As such, Featherfall was actually finished about a week ago and has been in an editing phase. The rough draft took about 10 days to produce. From there, I spent about another week going over finished chapters and making edits. (Had a few friends proofread it as well during that time period). Once all that is out of the way I do a final edit pass and submit each chapter as I edit it, usually at a rate of one chapter every other day. The author comments at the end of chapter 4 were not burn out, merely my empathy for the character's situation at the end of the chapter 4 flashback. I feel that it is probably the saddest scene I have written to date, though your mileage may vary :twilightblush:

2214283 For some reason, it isn't on FiMfiction, but it is on Equestria Daily. Here's the basic premise: Twilight gets a disease called Horn Rot. It's fatal unless she gets a certain flower. AJ, RD, and Rarity go beyond Equestria's borders into the land of Gildedale to find it. It's actually pretty good.

2214280 Ah, that explains how you were posting art of this scene in your blog a few days ago. In that case, one a day is perfect.

2214315

Yes! Didn't Purplelemons do a great job on it? :twilightsheepish:

Okay, now I really want Frosty's family to suffer a horrible fate. Well, except for Torch. He's cool. But seriously, you do an awesome job at making characters I absolutely love to hate. Keep up the wonderful work!:rainbowkiss:

Yes! Yes! Kill the ...uh, never mind. But anyways, yes! YESH!

Is it all ?
Will there be continuation ?

2234295

There is one chapter left. Hoping to put finishing touches on it over the weekend.

2234295

And after that, who knows? I'm toying with the idea of doing a Coldhorn story. Haven't settled.

2234698
:fluttercry:
It's sad. We only met characters and the story is over :(
It is very interesting setting for some nice detective series with magical crimes unit in a whole and Featherfall especially.
(although I have to say that all of the officers are interesting characters).
Featherfall's world is not too light (police officer hardly could see world like Pinkie) but in the same time not so dark as noir detective stories.
Very, very good mix, imho.
I hope that writer itching will not leave you and you will continue series (Coldhorn is really interesting character too, I hope she was not harmed during short time spent in cocoon)
Btw did you read Starlight over Detrot ? - it's brilliant!

Fernin is a pretty cool guy.

Oh, and don't forget to mark the story as complete.

2310537

It's marked now. You must've got to it pretty quick.

2310564

Fraid so. I can see myself revisiting the characters though. Cold Horn comes to mind as a possibility, maybe even Swansong. It is likely if I did a story focused on either of them that Featherfall would be around still. I really grew to love Featherfall.

Two questions:
1) what job did Featherfall get from Sbowdust ?
2) does she think about getting proper magical education now when she has some free time ?
It was her dream for some time, did not it ?
Or did she get some while working in MCU ?

2311653

The implication is that Snowdust is a weather team captain and knew Featherfall back in Flight School. Due to the sacrificial nature of Featherfall's spellcasting, it seems unlikely to me that she'll ever receive formalized training due to her relative inability to practice. When I set out to start working on the character my approach was that she would have a very low diversity of spells, but be rather good at them.

2312471
Thanks. Now I understand it better.
Regarding story ending in whole:
Not fairytale ending definitely, but very believable. May be even too believable - reminds of real life too much...
Well, anyway, I see this as rather happy ending - heart-warming and bittersweet simultaneously.
Cannot wait for your next masterpiece
