ArmOfSorrow

T

Corporal Mason Gray and his partner, Staff Sergeant Matt Barker, are abandoned in the Ukrainian wilderness after failing a mission to assassinate a terrorist cell leader. Giving up, he accepts help from a mysterious spectre, feeling himself being transported somewhere else.
Once in Equestria, he discovers a plague, emanating from a dark pit in the earth, that threatens to eradicate pony-kind, just as it did to the dominant race before even Discord, and it needs to be stopped at the source.

Anddd... you forget the OC tag. Wow.

1927469 Technically, I think it should have an "other" tag

...the only sniper rifle powerful enough to kill our target at this distance of nearly a mile...
Incorrect, many bullets are still lethal at that range. In fact, the current record shot was made by a .338 Lapua at 1.54 miles.

I can't figure out why a pair of officers would be sent as snipers. Maybe I'm missing something, but that is not typical.

Oh, and please fix the wall of text. Indent the paragraphs or something. It's difficult to read.

...secondary M1911 with three clips...
You mean three magazines.

So...you hear something, shoot at it, and then take a nap? Okay.

M9 ? Where did that come from?

Most Marines would take offense to being called a soldier, and wouldn't refer to themselves that way.

:rainbowlaugh: Yeah, I don't like Communists either.

1927696 I'll make the changes. I realized the M9 thing, but forgot to change it before uploading it. As for the ranks... bad info on my part, minimum rank required is a Lance Corporal, so I must have gotten confused or something. So, anyway, thanks for the feedback. :pinkiehappy:

Brilliant story mate! Keep it up! Love the combination of it with the military world of reality. Love the character Mason Grey and his background and also love how you have created the inter-dimension feel. :)

I'm going to go chapter by chapter.

SSgt Matt Barker?

Very creative name. :ajbemused:

--First Chapter

Ever heard of "No Man Left Behind?" I guess if there was absolutely no alternative, they would retreat, but it looks to me like there was plenty of opportunity. This is Russia. Sure, it's not exactly a peaceful land, but it is not a warzone. They have Government (however questionable), which imposes laws, that Police enforce. I have a friend who immigrated over a couple of years back, and it's really not that bad.

US-Russian relations are... tense, to say the least, but if these extremists hate the fall of the soviets, they also hate the government that took its place. It's like if a Nazi extremest group roamed the streets in a rural state in the USA, hating England and fighting with them while the US stood by idly.

--Second Chapter
It's not BDUs, its ACUs.

--Third Chapter
Mysterious weapons appearing from nowhere. Also, a Marine commando forgets to turn his safety off?

--Fourth Chapter
This is moving a bit quickly - I mean, think about it. You think they're enemy, you try to kill them, they knock you out, you wake up, let's be friends!

--Fifth Chapter
"Dragon!"

That was quick. Well. Quick. Very.

It kinda interests me, a veteran marine forgetting all of his training once he finds himself in Equestria. He doesn't know for sure these ponies are friendly. Stop carrying a pistol because they asked you to?

Plus, what happened to Fluttershy's animal abilities?

--Sixth Chapter

" ...They were trying to help, even offering to take us both in, and you threatened to kill them? Jesus, you could be dishonourably discharged and sent to prison.”

What? No. No. No. No. No.

Jesus Christ, this is the first time a soldier has ever made alien contact. He would know that just because they appear friendly, doesn't mean they are. If I recall correctly, he ordered them to stay back or he would shoot.

I'm not saying he should have killed them, or even that he should have threatened to kill them, but it was within his right to. Saying he could be dishonourably discharged/sent to prison is going way too far.

--Eighth Chapter
Wow. Harsh, Celestia.

She's really being a bitch.

Wait one second, though. Guards? Guards in a non violent world? Why would they need them? To keep Canterlot safe? From what?

---

Look, I don't mean to offend, I'm just pointing stuff out. I kinda feel like this story is rolly-coastery, but by all means keep writing.

Also, what happened at the end is exactly why a) you don't trust unknown people/ponies randomly offering help,

b) get rid of your most power weapons because you were asked

and c) don't settle in without making contact with the nation's government.

Well, I'll continue to track, and see what happenes.

First he's a corporal, then a LT?

2049780 He was originally an LT, but after I went over the ranking system I ended up changing it to a corporal to satisfy his age. I must've left an LT reference in there somewhere. I'll change it.

And this is why you don't get a court martial for not trusting ponies on sight.

2221699 Well, I'm glad that your keeping up with the updates :pinkiehappy: but I do have to at least make one correction: in your last post, you said that they wear ACUs. For the majority of the armed forces, ACUs are the uniform, but USMC Special Forces have reverted back to MARPAT Woodland BDUs. However, thanks for the comments, they help!

2221816 Wouldn't the US Army be deployed into Russia rather then a USMC SpecOps team? The marines travel with the navy remember?

2221863 Aye, but the Marines tend to take up a lot of ground and inland assignments, arguably almost as much as the Army. Their motto is along the lines of "First in, last out" I believe, and their reaction tends to be specific to the location and severity of the situation.

2221904 Their motto is "Always Faithful" and they're a rapid deployment combined arms force. They do get inland assignments, what happens is the Army does long term campaigns and the Marines will perform rapid movement tasks. For example, in Vietnam, US Army held the lines while the Marines led the advances before pulling back out. In WWII they took an island, handed it over to the army, and moved on to the next. In Afghanistan, they were the first ones in, securing airports, towns, etc, before handing over main control to the Army. Afterwards, they participated in individual operations but left most of the general line holding to the Army. Just participating in land campaigns isn't enough - look at what they actually do.

2221977 Well, you evidently know more than I do :rainbowlaugh: and I think you sort of answered your own question; being a rapid deployment combined arms force would explain why they took the mission instead of it being handed over to the Army SpecOps. Truthfully though, my initial explanation for choosing a marine sniper team was because I like the Marines, and since it's just a fanfiction, then why not? anything can happen in fantasy-land :pinkiehappy:

I wonder why this is on hiatus. :rainbowhuh:

2223273 It was until I realized that I had a half written chapter , so I finished it and posted it. Now I'll probably continue it, so I'll remove the status
