Miscarriage - First_Down

There was no warning. No grand reveal. Rainbow Dash was out in the park tossing a frisbee between Applejack and Apple Bloom like sheā€™d done a hundred times before on clear afternoons, carefree as always. But when the feeling hit, it rooted her legs to the ground, paralyzed, and she barely registered the hard, plastic disc bouncing off her muzzle.

ā€œHeh, gotta keep yer mouth open, sugarcube.ā€ Applejack joked, but when she heard no response her expression turned. ā€œHey, Rainbow, you ok? I didnā€™t hit ya that hard.ā€ Dash looked away, unsure how to answer.

ā€œIs everything all right, sis?ā€ Apple Bloom called out a few steps behind.

ā€œJust fine, AB. Mind if I take a quick timeout with Dash here?ā€ After she was gone, Applejack wrapped a foreleg around Dashā€™s shoulders. ā€œWhatā€™s going on?ā€

ā€œItā€™s nothing,ā€ Dash finally said, still not meeting her marefriendā€™s eyes.

ā€œDonā€™t sound like nothinā€™ ta me.ā€

ā€œIā€™m fine.ā€

Applejack sighed. ā€œYa ainā€™t no good ta me like this, Rainbow. Youā€™ve even said so before.ā€ Dash winced at that last line, so Applejack leaned forward gave a light kiss. ā€œCome on now. Talk ta me. Please.ā€

At last Dash found the ability to move, if only to sink her body into the fresh grass. ā€œIā€™mā€¦ jealous,ā€ she said after a long pause. ā€œOf you and Apple Bloom.ā€

Applejack raised her eyebrows in surprise. ā€œā€˜Cause we was playinā€™ catch earlier?ā€

ā€œNo, not because of today!ā€ Dash exclaimed, fiercely. ā€œNothingā€™s different today than any other day. So maybe Iā€™ve always been jealous, and I didnā€™t realize it until now. I donā€™t know.ā€ Her next line was a whisper. ā€œMaybe itā€™s because I couldā€™ve been a sister too.ā€

ā€œCouldā€™ve beenā€¦ oh.ā€ Applejackā€™s ears wilted at the tips when she realized what Dash was saying. ā€œOh, Rainbow, Iā€™m so sorry. I didnā€™t know.ā€

ā€œI never told you.ā€

ā€œWell, sure butā€¦ā€

ā€œIt was going to be a boy too. They say you canā€™t know for sure, but I did. It was going to be an awesome little brother that I could go racing with. And see Wonderbolts shows together. And break curfew all the time. And have big adventures.ā€ Dashā€™s voice broke, and she squeezed her eyes shut.

ā€œWhat happened?ā€

ā€œMom fell. It was an accident, and it didnā€™t look bad at first. But they said there was too much damage.ā€ Dash shook her head and lowered it to the ground. ā€œIā€™m sorry, Applejack. I donā€™t mean to be jealous. Youā€™re a great sister, but sometimes I feel like I couldā€™veā€¦ā€

ā€œNone aā€™ that, now,ā€ Applejack said and kissed the top of Rainbowā€™s head. ā€œYer already a great sis, Dash. Apple Bloom loves ya. And I know Scootaloo thinks the world of ya. I promise these things count. Even if it ainā€™t blood, itā€™s still family.ā€

ā€œHeh, yeah. That silly kid,ā€ Dash smiled mirthlessly.

ā€œIf ya like I could go find her.ā€

Dash shook her head. ā€œStay?ā€

Applejack held her tight. ā€œā€˜Course, Rainbow. As long as ya need it.ā€
