Wonderful story.

Aww, a very sweet, or rather, bittersweet, story. I usually avoid sad stories like the plague, but this was really nice. It was nice to see the future of the CMC, and the whole backstory of the setting of the story is really fascinating. I'd certainly want to hear more about that. Nice touch with all the previous generation references. Most of the time those are used as the past, but the future? Now that's an interesting turn.

And the last part was a very good move: Not revealing exactly what Applebloom's mark was. It goes well with the strange, metaphysical, almost Doctor-Who-esque ideas.

All in all, kinda depressing at points, but heartwarming all the same.

Alright, now that I'm not so damn tired, here's an actual comment.
I just watched a movie and read a book that had their plot stretched so thin you could break it by blowing bubbles at it, so I was weary when you started throwing out Celestial Guards and 'The War' (that was mentioned once), and the fire that consumed Sweet Apple Acres. However, you pulled it off. Maybe it's the magic of pastel ponies, maybe it's the writing style, but you pulled it off.

I'm going through most of your library, but I had to stop on this one to comment.

One of my basic tenets when writing is that stories about ponies are stories about people. They may be oddly shaped people, in pastel colors, who can fly or use magic, but they're still people. The best parts of this story, what set it apart from any other fic that deals with disasters or wars or whatnot, is that it focuses on the people -- how the events affect them and how they are changed.

It's a spectacular story. Again, thank you for it.
