Once the coast was clear, he carefully waddled over to the rock and woke the snake up. He showed him his home and dropped it off. The snake turned around to wave goodbye but found that the skeleton was gone.

Well it's just that original Chess game of gods was more dramatic and tragedy tag dominated.
I mean normal people were sent to other universes for 'Gods' amusement, They were traped in alien bodies that were slowly destroying they minds. The world doesn't give a fuck about they problems and day routine become a stand for dear life. Yes there was an occasional fight here and there but it point usually was like " god#1 'Hey I bet for exactly one fuck that my excuse for a pawn will stay alive in local conflict longer than your!' god#2 ' IT'S ON!'' and all this preshes drama after they would find out that they fought for nothing. Ahh... good days.
