This looks like something that's out of ordinary! No one has ever thought of somepony being a changeling! This is like the fact that a normal human girl wants to go to ponyville, and she does but, she's half pony and changeling. <<<<This was from a story I read. It's really good. This might actually make sense if it's done right!  She could have used her mental powers to just cause everypony to gloss over the fact that no one has ever seen or heard a thing about her family.

Also I happen to be writing my own changeling fic and came up with my own reasoning as to why changelings need love and it might be of use to you if you haven't already settled on your own explanation.

My explanation actually makes it so changelings do need food and water but love is absolutly essential for their survival, you will find it in my er... "story" (click and you will under stand) over here under the section nearish to the top under the bold "SPECIAL NOTE"

I don't know if this is the first time this idea pops up, but it certainly is the first time I come across it. It does feel like it's the one Scootaloo origin that will not necessarily involve a ton of gratuitous drama.

At least it's not the "Scootaloo is homeless/orphaned" cliche'

Shit just got real.

The idea has appeal, and it's ironic because of all the Cutie Mark Crusaders, Scootaloo is the one who's most secure in herself.

However, the prose could use some revamping. Most of the story is dialogue, and the events going on have to stop every time we get a peek at scoot's thought process. It would feel more vivid if we got immersive description and a look inside scootaloo's head. Is the changeling truth always praying on her mind? If we could sense the internal dilemma when she's apparently doing normal cutie mark crusader things, it would add depth and purpose to the shenanigans.

I must say that the idea of scootaloo becoming rainbow dash is a creepy, amusing, and cute extension of her fandom. I just think the secret would feel more "real" and relevant if you had richer scenes and more character internality. The characterization in The Adventures of Daring Dash and Derpy Doo springs to mind.
