1165316 Actually, aren't the Cutie Mark Crusaders around eight or nine years of age? They're referred to as fillies...
Also, in the Flim Flam Brothers' episode, Flim refers to Applejack as a filly in an attempt to be gentlecoltly and "proper," so to speak. So it, presumably, just means "young lady" or something of the sort.
"Foal" is generally the term associated to those who are of toddler age, such as Pound and Pumpkin, the Cakes' little ones.
Just thought I would clear that up.
Unfortunately, I have huge O.C.D. and something with this many little mistakes in it kind of bothers me... I wish it didn't, though because this seems to be getting good reviews otherwise...

A mare, referring to the implications within the Friendship is Magic world, is used in regards to those grown-up females of around the age of the Mane 6, which is, referring to canon, the age of 17 (except for in Fluttershy's case, whom is 18).
I wasn't saying what the author did was right, sorry if that was confusing, I was simply saying that the age for "fillies," regarding Friendship is Magic, is higher than simply 4 and under and that, in fact, a pony 4 and under, or "toddlers" age for humans, are generally referred to as foals.
I wasn't supporting the author as much as I was just correcting your statement... Sorry about the confusion.
