Dark is merely a genre choice, it's okay to have chapters that aren't always dark and broody. Honestly, this is a good story, I'm glad you're showing character development

If a story is totally, completely dark, than it becomes boring after a while. A sad or light comedic chapter is awesome. Keep writing!

Then how about talking about those moments where you were holding your child in your arms as he or she slept on your shoulder?

Now, if a buddy was telling me the first during such a time, I would have called him an idiot and went back to just doing enough to survive whatever the hell was going on.

If he had been telling me the other one however... I believe it would have flipped on a switch. Thoughts of "I want to feel that for myself" or "I want to feel that again" dance in my mind, causing me to do more than just survive. I would work harder, walk farther, fight harder, all for the desire to know and understand the feeling of being a father, and all it's ups and downs.

A panda is cute. The CMC are cute. But something that would inspire hope in life? Heartwarming.
