There's a surprisingly dark implication in this comedy piece. The magic of Equestria is failing.

My personal theory has always been that pony magic is channeled via keratin "antennae". This is most obvious with unicorn horns, of course, but it's also how pegasi fly (keratin feathers channelling flight magic) and how ponies in general manipulate things with their hooves that they normally couldn't (short-range telekinesis). It's also how earth ponies do whatever it is earth ponies do.
