In an attempt to console the distraught pegasus, Dash and AJ search for a solution to her busted optics, only to end with the young pegasus leaving for the manufacturer in a rush of excitement.

Things take a turn for the strange when the same pegasus returns four hours later with a brand new camera...  From a round-trip journey of over five thousand miles.

Tempers flare, challenges are issued, and Rainbow Dash's pride is put to the ultimate test.

I have to admit, I am impressed. Try as I might, I can't find anything wrong with this story without sounding like a nit picky jerk. Descriptions are nice, it flows like a faucet, and Dainty Dish is brilliant. I'm not a plane/jet expert and am only a mediocre writer in my opinion, but I could tell right away that there was a hard to detect layer of realism in the character you made the second I heard how fast she made that trip despite her fragility. It was in the way you presented her that made it stick out to me. It was so different from other situations like this. I find what you did here to be a lot better than simply slapping an OC together. You gave her a hoof in our world that made her easy to relate to, ever if that was unintentional.

This vehicle based pony created a nice change of pace to the beaten down down trope of 'fast character meets faster character.' As opposed to her being weak and having some kooky magic trick, there a believable layer of science that makes it make so much sense. That was the most satisfying part; there are absolutely no questions, small or otherwise. In most other stories, I'd probably be asking why Dainty would be going so high. But you gave a logical and understandable reason. It fits together like a puzzle if only you are willing to put the pieces together.

On another note, Dainty relates to me personally. The fact that she didn't understand that she was fast in an issue I've had to deal with regularly. Up until I was sixteen, I didn't understand that my I.Q. was really high and I couldn't figure out why other kids kept saying I was trying to sound smarter than them or make them look bad. Imagine how stupid I felt when I found out I was smart. I'd like to extend a personal thanks for making a character that deals with the problem of being good at something and not knowing it.

As an aviation fanatic, I can't help but throw out the best praise for this story. Not only does it come as a wonderful bonus for me (in fact, I was wondering if you were going to throw in a reference to wing loading regarding Dainty and Dash's wing profile, thereby explaining one of the reasons Dash can pull snap turns), but everyone's character was well maintained and stayed within relevance. I commented in an earlier chapter about recognizing the distinctive color scheme and cutie mark, and I love how she carried around the Blackbird's recon sensor suite as her job. Honestly, I like how it does a good job of explaining how ponies special abilities along make up for their schizo-tech world. Who needs a MAch 3 jet when a pony does the job?

I loved this story. It's unlikely due to my hectic schedule and a few other stories elsewhere I'm working on, but if I may one day, someday, I'd like to write her her own story. I think she deserves it.

    Well done.

A friend linked me here and I have to say I'm impressed.  This may sound like faint praise, but the fact that you did not press heavy on the angst pedal with the character, when it would have been incredibly easy to do so, says good things about you as an author.  Characterizations are solid and prose is good.  Pinkie was slightly heavy-handed, but she's pretty difficult anyhow so I can hardly fault you for that.  On the other hand, the bit with Twilight and Spike and "it knows!" was tremendously funny.

(though I might suggest putting Twi's imagine spot in all italics or something similar)

The image posted on the title is correct.  The image containing the SR-71 with Dainty was concept art pulled from The Pony Generator (FULL version) using an actual SR-71 flight patch.  It's older, and meant as concept art until some talented artist designs a Dainty Dish to live up to her.

I propose the next story be about Mikoyan, a pegasus from Stalliongrad who try as he might just can't quite catch Dainty when she flies overhead.  The one time he was about to, his wings actually started to catch fire and he had to drop speed to put them out.

His full name is, of course, Mikoyan Gurevich the 25th, but since many of the previous holders of the name Mikoyan Gurevich are still around most people call him Foxbat, after his flying fox cutie mark.

    SPOILER ALERT!!!

Unfortunately, as Applejack noted on her way in, it had a slow creeping infestation of black mold taking over.

-Would this be the one that RD destroys in one of the episodes?

“You just tell me when you want it down, and you can consider it as good as destroyed.”

    -I guess so!

“Good,” Rainbow Dash nodded.  “ That confirms she’s okay.”

-That seems like a bit of a conclusion jump...

“But I simply do not deal with this kind of equipment to actually know anyone who would be able to repair it.”

    -I take it Equestria doesn't have a yellow-pages?

Rarity turned and started levitating several of her materials.

-Well, she can probably manage something on the level of a HEPPA filter. Don't know about a charcoal filter.

I think she might have something that helps protect clothing.”

    -Protects it from what? Snot?

    “Who’s ready to PAAAARTAY?!”

-It actually took me to this point to figure out that Rarity WASN'T trying to design an anti-allergy mask, but rather a set of sneeze-proof cloths.

Standard Pinkie Logic was a bit odd to follow at times, but it always made sense in weird ways.

-Well, I guess that "party" includes "wedding reception" and people generally want good photos there.

including one that made dainty accidentally flap her wings,

    -Capitalize "dainty".

“But nobody remembers those kind of details anyway...”

    -Nice one...

With weather managed by the local Pegasus team, and Celestia carefully managing just how much sunshine Equestria gets, it was almost ALWAYS perfect for any outdoor activity one could imagine.

-Twilight from "The Ticket Master" would disagree... although Rainbow Dash MIGHT have used her authority as captain of the weather team to over-ride the usual procedures, but I don't think she would abuse a trust like that (She is Loyalty after all).

“Oh, I bet was priceless to watch.”

-“Oh, I bet that was priceless to watch.”

This might sound a bit odd, but I'd like to go over it with you to make sure that I'm not deviating from character: If she were to have seen something very unusual, say, during a recon run, something that would have "tactical" implications, would it behest her to perform a wide radius turn in the stratosphere to investigate with her camera? That is, would it be strange for her to forgo on her assigned run if she saw something really out of the ordinary to take pictures?

Additionally, I know that she has her HYCON, but it always sort of struck me that she might also have excellent eyes herself, kind of akin to a personification of the Blackbird's recon suite. I'm not saying that she'd have eyes that would rival her camera, but much like a high-performance pilot, perhaps a fighter pilot, would require, she would have very perceptive vision. Would this be too-farfetched to use?

I would say 'no' on the first question.  Real blackbird missions were practically choreographed dances and everything was almost ALWAYS planned out long before hand on the ground.  At most, if she spotted something odd, She'd snap her camera on it and get the best shot she could get without having to make a deviation.   Then later she'd make a trip to that target.  Chances are, anything short-term worthy of her notice isn't going anywhere fast enough to know to get the heck up out of the way and hide when she's taking photos.

As for having good eyes.  I would give her 20x20 vision.  But nothing too fancy.  At 17 miles high, there's not much she can look at that's very meaningful to her.  Especially not when it's there, then gone so fast.  Apply her photographic memory (like when she listed the Hycon's values in story after hearing it only once) to whatever she sees.

Very, very good story. As usual, didn't care much for the typical Mane Six stuff, but the aerial stuff, especially here at the end, was really great.

Well there we have it, a brilliant story, and impressive use of musical accompaniment.

More importantly this is an example of successfully breaking one of the 'cardinal rules' of fan-fiction, making an OC that is better at something then a cannon character’s specialty. Because Dainty Dish is so specialized, she does not occupy the same space as Rainbow Dash and cause problems. Of course, the fact there is solid characterization, and a well rounded and developed (for the length) character to work with in Dainty Dish is what makes this work in the end. But it is a rare example of breaking the rules with an OC done right, and for that I salute you.

first i just wanna say as the story goes its great! but theres just one fact you got messed up that messes the whole story up for me....

and that is the speed at which a sonic rainboom happens is way different than when a sonic boom happens..... one shatters sound the other light..... i'm not sure if you seen the video on youtube or not but it mathematically proves RD has to do over MACH 5 just to even do the sonic rainboom so already faster than..........blackbird

here i'll just send you link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muVfidujxRg

but again as a story goes its great

    Hi there!

First off, this was a very good story, and I look forward to seeing more of your work.  I really liked how you were able to transform the SR-71 Blackbird into Dainty Dish.  As an OC, DD was believable, relatable, and her interactions with the mane cast were very well done.  I loved it!

I just had some questions about the techincal details that you mentioned in your explanation here.  Please note that I'm not an expert at this; my mind is sort of a grab-bag of facts that I struggle to piece together properly. Furthermore, I apologize for being more than 2 weeks late here; I just got around to reading this, and seeing your detailed explanation got me thinking.  Which is usually a bad thing.  :derpytongue2:

First off, I had some concerns about how Dainty is able to breath while crusing at that altitude.  As you probably know, ponies (and humans) have have a minimum requirement for the partial pressure of oxygen (pp O2) in the air that they breathe.  While this requirement is satisfied at ground level, as one goes higher, the air pressure drops (as you mentioned) and the pp O2 drops proportionally.  pp O2 is important in calculating the time of useful consciousness--without oxygen, one functions slower and will eventually lose consciousness.  I took a brief look at Wikipedia's article on TUC; although the numbers are for humans, I believe that they'll serve as ballpark estimates for ponies.  Wikipedia listed the TUC for a human at rest at 50000 feet to be only 6-9 seconds.  Now add in that 1) Dainty is likely flying far higher than that (the SR-71 Blackbird routinely flies at 80,000 feet, with a service ceiling of 85,000), and 2) Dainty is actually physically exerting herself to power her flight, and I find it far more likely that Dainty would simply lose consciousness and fall/crash long before she reaches her cruising altitude/speed.  Furthermore, while airplanes can be designed for such conditions, ponies cannot (unless we decide to handwave this with magic), and so I find it hard to believe that Dainty has some special lung system that exists solely to allow her to fly at these altitudes.  (I considered the effect that flying at those speeds would have at pressurizing the air within her lungs, but it still wouldn't be enough to allow useful periods of consciousness.)  Did you have some rationalization for this?

Second off, I had some concerns about your statement that "The higher you go, the less junk is in the air.  For a pony that’s allergic to ‘everything’ as was shown in the story, going up higher and higher takes her clear of allergens, allowing her to escape the misery."  While this is true to some extent, I believe that it no longer applies at the altitudes that Dainty would be cruising at.  80,000 feet puts her firmly within the mesosphere.  The mesosphere is far above the altitudes at which normal weather processes (which would clear the air of particulates through effects such as cloud formation & rain) occur.  In addition, at this altitude the air is stratified by temperature; mixing of the air layers would be fairly uncommon.  Furthermore, the mesosphere is where meteors usually ablate, disintegrating into particulates and ions. (For example, the sodium layer, a layer of uncharged & unbound sodium atoms, usually exists at altitudes between 80 and 105 km.)  Granted, I'm not entirely sure about the effects of the particulates that exist at these altitudes on an equine respiratory system, but I don't believe the statement of "the higher you go, the less junk is in the air" is so clean-cut at the altitudes that Dainty would be cruising at.  Did you have some justification for this?

But I'm just nitpicking at details here.  I really liked the story as a whole and Dainty as a character!  Bravo, and as I said earlier, I look forward to seeing more of your work!

Mach 6.2 is the calculation based off the Mach Cone if I recall from memory.  However, that math is inherently flawed on principle.  Because the show is animated, the instance of the 'mach cone' is not based on technical fact, but on style.  It's used to show someone 'yes, we're going REALLY fast right now', but not actually based on anything of usable fact.

Using it to determine anything 'hard' is worthless.  It is also inconsistent, as in a dead-vertical dive, assuming Cloudsdale in 'Sonic Rainboom' was at eight thousand feet to ten thousand feet (A comfortable temperature and pressure altitude), Rainbow Dash would have covered the distance between the arena and the ground in under a second and hit the ground with the force a little under half her weight in TNT.  On top of this, her 'shown' speed is far less than mach 6.2  (Mach six point two is around or a little above 2 miles per second.  11,000 feet would be about two miles high.)

In order to be consistent, she would have to be much, MUCH higher than possible in that scene. (

330,000 feet, well above breathable atmosphere.)

Since the logical math between her mach cone, her time to cover distance, and her displayed onscreen speed are all in conflict, I can only toss them out and go with what was obviously intended by the sonic (rain)boom.  And that is that the event is her passage of the Mach One eveleope, not Mach Six.  As there is no special transition effects when someone goes hypersonic.

Trust me, if Dash did anything even CLOSE to mach 3, let alone mach 6, in a dead vertical dive like that she'd cover the distance so fast we wouldn't have time to make it a dramatic scene.

    To answer your queries/questions/nitpicks.

On breathing.  Dainty breathes VIA 'Ram Air'.  If it's enough oxygen to keep the afterburners of the Blackbird Lit, it's enough for her to breathe.  Beyond that, I'm not going to overthink it.

On the allergies vs altitude bit, same deal.  I'm not going to try and overthink the situation.

Because in all honesty, I looked over it.  And we're looking at a show in which anvils can be dropped on character's heads witout killing them, the sun and moon are controlled by animals, and a pegasus can hit mach one.  Try and take the science too hard and you end up trying to rationalize everything.

So I don't. The science I apply is more as a guideline than hard-science.  It allows for consistency, but I stop short of actually sitting down with a calculator and calculating the Lift/Drag ratio, or thinking about the fact that at Mach 3, Dainty's nose wouldn't be heatblasted, but rather the flesh would be melted right off her bones (which would then incinerate)

So the rationality is: 'It's a kids show in a looney-toons-esque world.  Science is considered, but only enough to keep things consistent.'

Allow me to correct myself: E.S. Posthumus' Lepcis Magna is a far superior representation of Dainty Dish's flight than Cuzco was. The rough, hard-drum opening represents the turbulence she must suffer, and just as one believes it is about to explode, the song settles instantly into a smooth, flowing piece, reminding me of her initial transcension through the Mach barrier.

I probably over-think this. I just love Dainty Dish too much  She will forever hold the place as my #1 favorite pony.
