Applejack has heard Rainbow Dash talk about Daring Do time and again, but never once has the farmer read the books. It seems like a natural fit to the cyan pegasus. Applejack is just as rough, tumble, and into adventure as the next mare. So why does she seem so hesitant to pick up the books?

Huh. I actually briefly considered it was going to be illiteracy, then chided myself for buying into the stereotype and figured it was just going to be she really really really wasn't interested and there was going to be a moral about how you can't force someone to like the same things you like and that's okay.
And then she turned out to be illiterate after all. Not sure what to make of that.

meh, i'm not happy with the moral of this as like Ri2. i was kinda hoping that it would have been a moral about you not being force someone to like the same thing you like but i will concede that it was well written and was still interesting even with stereotyping.

This was a commission and that was the plot I was paid to write. I knew it was sterotypical and tried to make a good story out of it regardless and do somethings I hadn't seen, like Starlight being involved and having a sense of sympathy to her.
Glad it was enjoyable despite that. When I have to write something sterotypical, I try to write it in such a way it's still enjoyable DESPITE that aspect.
I think having Starlight be the pony to teach Applejack to read at the end was an unexpected delight, and I like the idea of Starlight teaching other ponies back in Our Town. Trixie struggling mightily not to throw down a smoke bomb as she left was also adorable, but when isn't Trixie adorable?
I recognize that a commission is a commission, but I do feel compelled to point out that in Apple Family Reunion, we see Applejack doing a ton of paperwork related to setting the whole thing up, so we know she can read.
