>using the comics as a guide

Summer, I'll let you in on an open secret: The comics sucks.

That said, it seems a little weak to use her parents as an excuse for her behaviour.

Uh oh, a sad story from Summer Dancer. Grab your popcorn and hang on tight to your feels everyone!

That's horribly, horribly cliche
But well written nonetheless.

The bit with Starlight's parents is hilarious. Is that inspired off of anything in particular?

...right off the bat I hate Sunset's parents. Those "A- isn't good enough and you should be ashamed of yourself" types are the absolute WORST. Well, not THE absolute worst, but you get what I mean. Parents who shame an overachieving child for not overachieving enough need to be slapped.

An A minus was unacceptable, but a B or below was worthy of a good whipping.

...okay yeah they need to have their children taken away from them and put in a better home. That's inexcusable.

;_; @ Sunset's Cutie Mark getting ignored. I mean, okay, badly timed baby, but still, OUCH.

...so this means two future unicorn supervillains had their Start of Darkness in a Cutie Mark related moment of being overshadowed by Sunburst?! :twilightoops:

“We were actually hoping for a boy,” Nova said with a wistful smile, gazing down at Sunburst. “But I guess fate had other plans. At least our little...uhm…” She turned to look at her husband, her mouth in a questioning grimace. “What’d we name our kid, Cosmo?”

“Starlight.”

“Starlight, that’s right! At least she came out healthy. Not every motha can say that for their child.”

:facehoof:

Something changed in Sunset’s eyes when she said that. Her expression darkened and her breathing grew more heavy. Silver Lining stepped back a little, but stopped upon Sunset’s sudden smile. “Really? Did they choose you, Silver? Or did they really choose somepony in their former student's shadow?”

Oh, Sunset, don't... :fluttershysad:

Princess Celestia laughed. Sunset thought it resembled a tinkling of a bell. “Don’t apologize, my little pony. In fact, I found it quite amusing.” She leaned in closer, whispering, “You should have seen the looks on the Royal Guard’s faces. They ran themselves ragged, trying to figure out what in the world was going on!”

Celestia is best troll.

This was a heartbreaking little read.

7829829 I'm sorry I broke your heart :fluttershyouch::rainbowlaugh:
7829536 Thanks, I based her off of Matilda's parents! Also, I LOVE your new avatar!

Frankly, I should have gotten that. But my memory is so terrible that I can never be sure. :rainbowlaugh:
Also, thanks! I was deciding between this one and another of Celestia by the same artist, and I have been reading quite a few changeling fics as of late so that one won me over.

I think the issue with her parents runs a little bit deeper than just not achieving enough, as evidenced when they refer to Silver Lining as "a threat to [them]." It's less that she's not achieving enough, and more that she is their golden ticket out of... well, I don't know what, but out of something, for sure.

Which is kind of worse, if you think about it.

(this does explain a few things about Sunburst, though)

Its great to see that there are other people with the Sunset and Sunburst are siblings headcanon.

"Huh....she even got me to care about 'Silver Lining'. I feel like asking her..."

*reads commments*

"SHE'S DEAD?!?!!??!!???" :raritydespair::raritycry:

Oh my, Sunset won't be taking it well...

This was very enjoyable and it'd be nice to see where it leads n a sequel when Sunset returns to Equestria.

7829123 Actually, it's common for kids to grow up to have bad behaviors because of their parents being the same. It's imprinted on them and the cycle continues. Yes, Sunset was still responsible for her actions, but the mentality of how her parents acted and treated her can affect her mindset. It's sadly common.

Hm . . . I would take issue with a unicorn using earth pony magic, especially a little filly who just recently started learning magic. However, the tree did wilt immediately. Maybe only earth pony magic can sustain trees long term and help them withstand stress. All right, I'll allow it. She said as if she were the editor.

Anyway, Nova is way too perky for someone who just gave birth the day before. She's also way too disinterested in her child. Sheesh, you'd think she'd at least want to take a moment to show off the cute new baby she'd made before she got bored with her. No wonder Starlight was so emotionally stunted.

Poor Sunset. Her life here sounded pretty awful with her parents pressuring her so much at such a young age, and they didn't seem to give her much affection or encouragement either - mostly just criticism and strictness. My favorite part was when Celestia found her singing to the foal and talked with her, it was very sweet.

It was kind of Silver Lining to do that, and it would've been nice if Sunset got the chance to thank her and apologize for her outburst. It's too bad Sunset couldn't find it in her heart to be more patient with Celestia too. The Sun Princess could've been the supportive and kind influence she really needed in her life. It's an interesting story you have here.

A good head canon story about Sunset's origins. I wonder if they'll ever surprise us with a canon story. And Sunset and Sunburst being brother and sister is pretty popular, it was nice the way you worked it in, though I wonder if Sunset realized Starlight was THAT Starlight the time she came over to EQG.

“But.. .Sunset, ” said her mother, her strained cheerful voice causing her to swallow hard. “It’s an A minus. ” Sunset didn’t have to imagine that odd smile that was on plastered her mother’s face whenever she was angry or disappointed. She could practically hear it in her voice. “I know you can do better than just an A minus, sweetie.”

Making a fuss over a A- is just ridiculous! :twilightangry2:

He placed his hoof on her shoulder. “It’s for your own good, Kiddo. One day you’ll look back and realize all the good we’ve done for you. One day, you’ll be grateful.”

If I was here, I'd be looking back to how strict my parents were, hell even my actual parents aren't that strict. :fluttershysad:

On one hoof, she was glad her they took the time to make sure to do well in school. On the other hoof, they’ve been very strict ever since she turned six years old. They didn't play with her quite as much anymore. An A minus was unacceptable, but a B or below was worthy of a good whipping. But overall, Sunset was grateful. It would be very tough school to get into, after all. Thousands of young unicorns from second grade to twelfth grade applied every year, and very few are able to get in.

That is just downright terrible!!! :fluttercry:

They watched as Silver touched her horn to the ground. Immediately, a tree sprung up from the grass, twisting and winding its way upward until it towered fifteen feet above the filly. The crowd oohed and aahed as the tree grew multiple branches. Sunset swallowed hard as each branch started to produce a fruit on it. The fruit grew larger and larger until it formed into full golden pears. When pears stopped growing, Silver plucked one off with her magic and proudly gave it to Miss Forthright.

That'll sure be tough to beat! 😰

Sunset followed her hoof and gasped when her rump started to glow. Everypony gasped and whispered excitedly. In a flash of light, a picture of a sun instantly appeared on her flank. One half was yellow and the other was red. Sunset squealed and jumped up and down. “A cutie mark! I got my cutie mark! ” She spun in a circle, looking at it from all angles. “Mom, Dad, look! I got my--”

Congrats sunset. :pinkiehappy:

Father tickled Sunburst’s chin. “Hmm? Oh, yeah. That’s great, Kiddo.”

Seriously, that's all you say about it, even after the birth of your son! What kind of a father are you!?!?!?! :flutterrage:

“You must be Sunset Shimmer.” Celestia nodded. “Silver Lining mentioned that she went to school with you. When she fell sick, she was able to ask if you could take her place.” Her eyes grew sad. “She wasn’t doing too well. We still don’t know how it could have happened, and so quickly. She’s in the hospital now, undergoing treatment. She’s stable, but the situation is...a little delicate.”

Oh my! :pinkiesad2:
