Wait, am I now just the one who wrote Mortem? 'Cause I think I'm okay with that.

Unfortunately, this meeting goes nothing like she expected. Nothing at all like she expected.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!! :rainbowlaugh:

Celestia had a meeting with America! LOL :trollestia:

:rainbowlaugh: Oh boy. This got a little too real for me!

7476814 Pretty much America, It was some kind of "knock knock it's Europe" thing in my mind.
But then again Valour is kind of like "Close the country, stop having it be open."
Sorry, I've got History of Japan in my head.

7477442 glad you enjoyed it. Not sure which side is real for you, but I hope you're not dealing with smog regardless.

Ok, awesome story. I also know that democracy wouldn't be the best of Equestria, because, as seen in several episodes, the rich and elite don't like the masses and would institute laws that discriminated against most ponies. And they could easily make it into a dictatorship once they had the power and eventually subvert it so Celestia, Luna, Cadence and even Twilight were the villains. (although with Twilight it would be more, the wicked princess eventually corrupted her.) And if you think the rich wouldn't gain power, just remember our current election is between two billionaires (although, is Hilary a billionaire or millionaire, I never actually cared to find out but you get the picture that both are extremely rich.)
A benefit of a benevolent leader that is also immortal is you have no need for democracy.

7478086 Thanks, I'm really glad you enjoyed the story. I don't really agree with you on the whole "no need for democracy in Equestria" especially in the context of the fic for a few reasons.
First of all, I was talking more along the lines of some kind of parliament or legislative office initially, as I made an effort put in the recommendation of creating a Parliament. Now, again, this may not be show accurate, but for the context of the fic I see the Equestria's legislative system to be something like Imperial China, where every single law at the national level is decided by the emperor, or Celestia and Luna in this case. This was insanely inefficient, even europian dictatorships at the time had some kind of legislative parliament with enough people to go over each piece of legislation properly.
Second, I don't think democracy in itself cements the rule of an elite, hence why millionaires have such a high voting turnout. Yes, there are points to be made about "Rule by consent" Idea's and money does have an effect on the outcome, but those aren't inherent issues with democracy. A lot of the best functioning government have done a lot to limit the rich's interests such as limits on party spending, proportional representation (other voting systems are available), and the splitting up of news and media monopolies. Arguably, the American election (the one you used as an example) is a direct consequence of a system that is designed to keep the powers at be safe (represented by Hillary) and the extreme anger from people who can't change it (represented by Trump).
Whenever Canterlot is shown in the show, the elite are often shown to have a lot of money, power, and Influence. They're the ones who are invited to the grand parties and get lots of time with Celestia, not everyday ponies. I don't mean to insult Celestia, I would rather have her in charge than most politicians in power today, but the system inherently gives richer ponies more time and has an unavoidable disconnect with some of her subjects, even if she does her best to breach it. Even the most basic of systems that gives each part of Equestria some kind of meaningful influence on decision-making would lead to power being taken away from the reach elite in Canterlot to the poorer parts of Equestria.
Anyway, none of that is really important because it has little to do with the fic, isn't the main point, and is made with a lot of assumptions and guesses on how Equestria is run. So yeah, sorry for wasting your time.

Interesting but I myself have always seen Equestria as already having that. My thought process was the members of this council or Parliament were similar to the characters from Rites of Ascension, where it was supposed to be a place where a lay pony's rights where protected and ended up corrupt. However, most would instead blame Celestia as Equestria appears to have an inferior education system that works by having ponies instead focus on their special talents.
This would mean that most ponies would vote for Parliament members as they already have experience with making national laws and these new, more powerful officials could in turn grant more power to the other elite.
I think Equestria has been under Celestia's rule for too long to end up a functioning society with out a kind alicorn ruling. Otherwise it would just end up collapsing into chaos.
Still, it was very a nice read as it's rare to find a story that talks about real issues, such a character dismissing the horrors of the slave trade.

"slammed the book close"

I think you meant to write "closed".

As written, it means suddenly slamming the book against her body like an American football player tucking the ball in close.

This was interesting. Do you think it's actually likely that Equestria is small or undeveloped compared to other nations on their planet, or did you just think it was a cool idea?

I did think it was just a cool idea, but something like this could be true if the writers went with it I guess. I mean the idea was built upon the fact Equestria seemed pretty small and was surrounded by unpassable areas in the map, with only a little enclave of sea going into it. And it's as good as any idea for why season trains were pulled along by ponies but season 2 trains had coal. But in reality, I think the writers weren't thinking of this kind of thing.

Know where you can spread your democracy? ON THE MOON!
