Oh my god. I must read this now.

This looks awesome!

OH NOES, Not DARK SAD and TRAGIC...... Must FAV.....

You create new story, when background pony is unfinished...and end of ponies still remains on haitus? THIS IS UNFORGIVABLE!!! WE SHALL MEET AT HIGH HROTHGAR, NO ARMOR WITH IRON SWORDS TO THE DEATH!!!

Beksinski as the cover art? This I gotta see.

In before the explosion of likes and favorites.

And my good sir/madam you did not disappoint.

Oh my... This is absolutely beautiful, sad but ended with such a "sweet" ending that I felt it was worth it. I find the world you crafted awe-inspiring and real. you are truly a gifted writer and I regret not finding your stories before now. Best wishes!

IT DEBUTS!

For those of you who like Post-Apocalyptic MLP stuff, or darker/tragic stores, you're not going to find a short story better than this one.

Oh wow, awesome, awesome piece of fic.
First chapter painted the scenery in bold, dark colors, and the master-slave relationship held up steadily. All those wretched creatures that popped up of Tartarus - ha! They sure must have been a lot if the abovegrounds without them was so incredibly good :rainbowwild:
The tech side of things was very catching and an awesome ongoing theme, although one has to honestly wonder when did they develop the things, did they possess this kind of technology in Tartarus itself? That paints a picture of that place that is very peculiar, to say the least :derpytongue2:
Second chapter was a very nice batch of finishing touches on 83's routine, as well as a compelling complications, and the third part was very touching, with the kind of bittersweet endings that are just the icing on the cupcake.
Not the most original of themes, but a masterful execution nonetheless, and one I thoroughly delighted myself in reading.

On a side note, spotted a couple of errors - EDIT: Corrected by now
But no big deal, this was a delightful read nonetheless! Thanks for writing and sharing it, and I await your next installment with trepidation! dl.dropbox.com/u/31471793/FiMFiction/emoticons/misc_Lyra2.png

Now why is this rated mature... I must know.

Minor errors noted:

Part I:
-Bright embers spat sporadically out of his skull as he hung there in the depths of Neo Sheol.

Part II:
-The stench intensified as well, to the point that Eighty-Three spat up tiny globlets bile with each platform he scaled. <-Missing "of"
-For a brief moment he hoped that both he and Globflint had been incorrect in their count, but he new better.

Part III:
- Eighty-Five remained quiet.
-When he reached the Bank of New Sheol, there was hardly any creatures in line. <-"were"

Other than that, once again a masterpiece. Dark, disturbing, yet hauntingly beautiful. You shame me with your skills of description and the depths of your imagination, good sir. Write something original and publish it already! You have the skill, man!

Love your stories dude! Ill read this one when i end with End of Ponies :rainbowkiss:

I don;t know if anyone reads these comments before reading the whole thing, but Electric Wizards albums Come My Fanatics and Dopethrone make excellent soundtracks to this fic. The track Solarion 13 especially.

Properly hellish story, nice work.

The happy ending was surprising.

Hell of a fic.

Electric Wizard makes a good soundtrack.

No problem man, I'm only disappointed I didn't find the face to show up in the Ponychan topic to proofread the thing in the first place, ha! :twilightblush:
But I will certainly try harder in the future, especially for BP. It's surely more than worth it.

MUST.
READ.
This is gonna be awesome. I can tell.

YOU MUST BOTH STAND UPON THE HIGHEST PEAK, STARK NAKED, AND USE NAUGHT BUT YOUR THU'UM!

How do you keep pumping out new stories and continuing the old ones? My god man leave some creativity for someone else!

That was beautiful. Depressing as goddamn fuck, but absolutely beautiful.

772663 Sorry, but My Little Metro takes the cake in post-apocalyptic stories in my opinion. However, this and EoP are dangerously close.

Regardless, excellent work SSaE. This is without a doubt one of the best tales I've ever read, certainly one of the saddest.

BLUH! In before this awesomeness gets featured!

Damn, dude. This is story is gonna haunt me for a while.

Heretic! :rainbowlaugh: Just kidding, Raz.

No, seriously though, this is a great story. I'm not so huge into heavy Grimdark, and this has that in spades. It's a beautiful story, despite this. You finish the final 'chapter' and are left with this wonderful catharsis. The characters are well written and deeper than simple tropes or stereotypes - but let's face it, this is Short Skirts and Explosions, he loves characterization and does it so well.

Throughout the entire story I was continually worried that this was going to end with 83 dying before he could accomplish whatever his goal was. I don't know if it was because you kept the level of suspense and fear for 83s well being at just the right level, or because I have read your other works here and feel that sometimes your motivation is "lets make every sad and depressed! MWA HA HA" :twilightsheepish:

I particularly enjoyed the character of Dream Peace. He seemed like a mirror to Spring Step in many way. When he was first introduced he seemed much less beaten down and still alive where as Spring Step came of as almost a shell of a pony. He acted as a great disruptive element to the story without coming of as forced or "I don't know if this character would really do this".

I was REALLY wary of this when I started reading it with the tag it had, but I have decided that I enjoyed it.

774056 Read My Little Metro, my good friend. It is one of the best written and under appreciated stories on the site.

And my blessings to you and Red Wings; I really want to read more of that.

For some reason, post-apocalyptic Equestria just doesn't appeal to me.

nice story, I mean apart from the obvious fact that it is not a "nice" story I enjoyed it and hope to read another story like this from you:rainbowdetermined2:

Well written and very compelling, but damn is this dark. Not even an equestrian resistance is mentioned or anything. Just the griffins. I need to go watch some kittens or something.

This right here is the definition of grimdark.

I'm glad that this was written. When Tartarus became canon, I expected a huge influx of grimdark fics on the subject. But nope. Barely anybody wrote about it.

This. Is. Beautiful. A marvelous story that I'm glad I had the privilege of reading

We need a sequel. With more happy. Great story, by the way.

How could a story be tragically sad and hopeful at the same time?

I tip my hat off to you, good writer :pinkiesad2:

Us mortals only wish we were as awesome as you, SS&E.

Yeah...some day Shorty, you need to right something happy... not happy as in there's a slight silver lining to the clouds 'cus the fact that they are made out of the living corpses of your friends and family sorta dampens the mood, ya know?

This was great and everything, superb even, but dayum was it heavy.

Wowzers.

I really don't know what much else to say. I'm trying to rack my brain to at least think up something that constitutes a review, but I've got nothing. This was grimdark. Very. But it had a beautiful ending that made my eyes moisten a little.

This just reaffirms why you are my favorite author.

That was horribly dark, that world of hellish creatures. Which, of course, means I enjoyed this story greatly. I look forward to reading the next 2 chapters to figure out how 83 died.

Well, that certainly presents a problem for our good friend 83 :unsuresweetie:

You know, Skirts, I've noticed a common theme in all your stories: hope, especially finding hope. It started with "The End of Ponies" when Scoots found reason to hope for a brighter tomorrow thanks to Spike's guidance. Then, in "Background Pony," Lyra found reason to soldier on through her curse, despite the endless pain it caused. And now, in "The Last Tears in Tartarus," Spring Step finds a reason to be 'happy' in world ruled by demons. No matter how sad your stories are, that quest for hope overshadows that depressive, saddening environment, and, in the end, everything seems strangely happy.

This story was great, and part of me wants a sequel, following the pony resistance or something. But, as it stands now, I'm more than satisfied with this ending. Well done, sir :moustache:

781549 That's just how good of a writer he is.

Also, not to damper SS&E, but, at least not for anywhere near a traditional revolution story, he wouldn't be in his element, so it would have to be either a very non-standard (w/e that is) revolution story or written by another author. (I'm basing this off of his other stories and how they're laid out and written)

But Great story SS&E, and only 17,716 words total? Love.

Shivers down my spine. Seriously. I love you.

So... this is my meager metal playlist to go with the story.
Rated at around 600 words per minute, with about 10 minutes for each part.

Yeah yeah, typical melodeath/black metal songs, bands overlap, maybe I'm not hipster enough :coolphoto:

Opening of Tartarus:
Mors Principium Est - Terminal Liberation

Part 1:
At The Gates - Under a Serpent Sun
Mors Principium Est - The Distance Between
Arch Enemy - Hydra

Part 2:
Emperor - Of Blindness & Subsequent Seers
Dark Tranquillity - Hours Passed In Exile

Part 3:
Darkane - The Killing of I
Eternal Tears of Sorrow - Aeon
Eternal Tears of Sorrow - The River Flows Frozen (Acoustic Reprise)

Just like Ursula K. Le Guin wrote in her book,
“Only in silence the word,
Only in dark the light,
Only in dying life:
Bright the hawk's flight
On the empty sky.
—The Creation of Éa”

The world is so real, the character is so solid, and the bittersweet ending, making it beautiful. You are sure have a gift at writing, keep up the good work!

btw did you write a real book (not fanfic) or something?
*sorry for my english

Please tell me you'll eventually add some continuity to this.

Of course, I suppose there isn't really a need for it. The story is magnificent enough on its own.

Good lord, this story is unbelievably fucking good. It's criminally underrated at the moment.

Great description, emotive and oppressive while never being too purple. The plot was solid as well, good pacing and the like. But the best thing about this story? The world building. If I could kiss you for the quality and imagination of this world building, I would in a heartbeat. It's just so real!

Absolutely heartrendingly gorgeous. God damn I want to be you!
