Once upon a time, Eric Winters put on an ancient mask at a costume convention and accidentally transformed all the attendees into whatever costume they were wearing. The Xanadu event changed the world; magic and superheros were suddenly real, as were a number of devious entities from across all of fiction. The fact that six of the transformed were wearing costumes based off a girl's cartoon shouldn't really be that much of a surprise...

I want to see more of this. You're not allowed to let it just sit in your stories doing nothing. Format could use some polish, but I want to see this.

Also, totally hoping the Balrog is actually a perfectly classy guy. It's kind of a cliche nowadays to have the big scary monster to a vaguely English gentleman, but it's a cliche I have yet to get tired of.

Geeze. So some of Twilight's friends became their pony personas, and some didn't? That's gotta be the day of Discord for Twilight all over again! And her horror would only GET WORSE when she learns that basically SHE is the artificial personality, not the other way around.
And poor Jake, Jerry is dead, and now there's what was before a fictional character in his place, and this fictional character won't knowledge him by his real name now that he's trapped in the body of what was a fictional character.
The kind thing for fate would have been for them all to become their pony selves, or for none of them to.
Also this would mean the Elements of Harmony (if they were created too) would not work since for Twilight, she has a stranger(s) wearing the faces of her friends, and from his point of view, there's a thing inhabiting the body of his dead friend.

So this takes place before Equestria Girls in her continuity. Did it take place before Princess Twilight Sparkle?

What happened? Or does she have BOTH Fluttershy and her human self inside her now and they're stuck debating what's going on? Poor both of them.
And poor AJ/Mark is stuck right down the middle.

Okay, what Jake did was perfectly rational and logical all things considered, he's trying to get his FRIEND BACK, but at the same time, we've seen that those who were changed while being in character at Xanadu don't simply 'click back'.
You think THIS TIME Twilight's friends won't make the mistake of letting her run off alone and hurt given what happened last time.
And yeah, seeing a scene right out of Discord's day of chaos WOULD be traumatizing to Twilight given half her friends were acting like strangers, and RD just claimed to be someone else and just told her that she wasn't who she remembers being down to the core of her existence.
And it's clear Pinkie still has her talents as a forth-wall breaker. She, Deadpool, and Ambush Bug should form a club.
I honestly wonder if Jake would decide to let go of his identity as Jake (effectively committing personality suicide) to become Rainbow Dash out of loyalty to her new friends (or so the Element of Loyalty can work again), or hold onto his self-identity for the sake of his friends who now no longer exist.
Ironically I can imagine if the Elements did exist and were used, the girls would gain memories of both sides of themselves, and find a balance between them.
Great to see I'm not the only Pony and Xanadu fan.
And seriously, the idea of the Strangers (nick name in universe for those who have lost themselves due to being in character when the change hit) has ALWAYS been what's drawn me to Xanadu a great deal, and the drama and puzzles that exist because of them.
It'll only get WORSE for Twilight when/if she meets the parents of the human she's REPLACED. And the six friends who are all she has now, some of them aren't even really HER friends on the inside. There are no right solutions.
One thing I liked in one fic, where the men in black characters used their neuralizer on a gold dragon Stranger, AND IT WAS A DISASTER. In particular when it's been said as part of the setting that a way to change back should NOT be easy to find, or readily accessible. (Basically a quest level event.)

I seriously giggled when I saw this. Xanadu. Granted it also reminded me I have no idea when I read a story from a certain mailing list becuase of pony fanfiction, but it still made me very happy to see this. I think the guy who found the mask was Eric Winters? There is no reason I would ever have to remember that, so it seems likely I'm right.
But yea, I can hardly wait for more of this.

This seems promising, and the concept is actually quite interesting. I'd love to see it expanded on. I can only imagine the scenarios that could stem from this! Hopefully you could continue.

Bonus round: there are probably multiple groups that cosplayed as various MLP characters, M6 especially; all of which would have been transformed to various physical and mental degrees. Eventually they will encounter each other... the ones that didn't run afoul of the various nasties the event spawned before then, anyway.
