not sure who volo is but i believe it's reasonable to assume that law of conversation of energy exists, and changelings gain energy by draining it from emotions. this has a couple possibilities.

1: the victims energy stores are being drained through the 'emotional wavelength' witch would harm and eventually kill the victim. makes for some dark stories knowing that a changeling could get you to love them until you died from it.

2: it's the energy put into the emotion that is being drained. Chrysalis mentioned equestria having more love then anywhere else, suggesting that this is the more likely situation. as the energy put into the emotion is bleed off the emotion itself should weaken

P.S. it seems it's already fannon but "and gains power by feeding off your love for them" not sustenance.

Well, as described in this work of fiction, changelings feed by absorbing the excess energy that emotions tend to give off. So it'd be more like the second possibility in your comment. The first possibility is rather contradictory, if a changeling kill their host from feeding too often it would be seen as a loss of potential food.

Also, it is sustenance to them. There's no question about it, they're parasites.

All speculation aside;  there be some nice nuts here.

i think you lost a chunk of the story : I entered the cabin and found Drop Shot looking out the window, and I noticed that the helm to the ship, "What can you tell me about your ship?" also what was so unusual  about what saffron said at the end? im really confused here other than that this was another great chapter

Thanks for the response, mate. The sentence was supposed to be I noticed that the helm to the ship was unmanned. Unponied. Whatever. I trotted up to the captain, and then the dialogue starts. I think I just forgot to save that, lol.

As for what Saffron said at the end, If only we had some way of tracking them without them noticing. It just so happens that Sentinel has a way of doing just that, and it might have been the universes' way of reminding him.

Sentinel isn't an Ent, per say, in fact in small groups or two or three he tends to speak his mind a lot more. It's when he's in a crowd he begins to act very slowly and plan his actions and words more deliberately, opting not to speak until he is ready. Thus his nickname as an Ent whenever he was surrounded by his peers in his old life. But he still thinks about everything he does carefully in everything he does.

Though I must say the recent events have cause him to act out more unnaturally.

I don't admit it's extremely wrong, but if you found something that looks like a half-man, half-fish thing, you would immediately put yourself in the 'us and them' situation. 'They' are so much different from 'us,' that we don't see that harming or using 'them' for 'our' own gain as morally bad. It's sad, but it happens. And a lot more often than you think.

Sorry, but in situations where their own survival is the first priority, ponies can be pushed to that limit. At least, the way I see it.
