Thief. Assassin. Sister. When her secret was revealed during the Battle of Canterlot, it shocked her friends, but Jade's story hid a darker past than they could guess.

Important Note: this story is a prequel to The Empty Room. You do not need to read it to understand this story, but bear in mind it happens entirely in a pre-Season 2 AU which has different situations (and some characters) than those that came up in canon after TER was completed.

Special thanks to Burraku_Pansa for sticking around and helping me bounce ideas, and helping me make sense of my own rantings while feverishly writing. Cover art by the amazing Rametep!

Geeze, I love that cover art. Another thing to the read it list. :P

Dammit, Wanderer! I already got too much to read! ;)

6722362 Drop the other stuff. Read this one.

Of all the fandom interpretations of a character, I think Silent Jade is my favorite. I also think a certain episode about Power Ponies could have been a nod to her. I shan't say more because spoilers and all that.

Guess I'll have to read TER again. Been so long that I don't remember who Silent Jade was.

6723098 you thought it was slient jade BUT IT WAS ME DIO!

I think I found a typo
Sweetie ignored the voices coming from the entrance, her concentration directly on the crib. She gritted her teeth. In there, sucking away happily at a bottle and without any care in the world was the one responsible for her mom dying.
Should it not be Rarity instead of Sweetie?

Wanderer, 'The Empty Room' is what got me interested in this site from the get-go. 'Past Sins' cemented it, but yours was my first MLP fanfic read way back in 2012. And now at last we get to see more of Silent Jade? Yes, please and thank you! I'll be very much looking forward to this one.

So many good memories are flowing... oh Celestia... I really thought TER was a goner...
This just made my week!

A story revolving around Silent Jade. I'm looking forward to the rest of this.

6724893 okay. I thought it was the assassin from the first chapter or something... :twilightblush:

The Origins of Silent Jade, sounds exciting!

6723214 It was fixed, thanks for pointing it out!
6723592 Well, I'm definitely glad to have you back in the TER universe!
6722334 Rametep's work is always awesome!
6722395 I- don't think you ever told me that! It's definitely a pleasant surprise! I hope you enjoy the story!
6724161 :raritystarry: That is what I expected your reaction to be! Surprise!
6724866 Thanks! I hope the story is to your liking!
6725087 Heh, I guess it could get confusing when the name pops out of the blue, but you are right in that they are related somehow.
6726756 I'd hope so! I'm excited!

6726775 Also D, I think reading this one before TER is a huuuuuuge spoiler for TER (due obvious reasons). I mean, I was sort of "Oh my bucking Celestia! Jade was HER all along!?" with the big reveal when it happened.
I hope people don't go read this one first because it would take away the surprise on TER.
Of course, we have yet to see TER's re-write and how it deals with the reveal.

6728344 Well, yeah, but to be fair, TER has been around since 2011...

6728892 That's true, yes, but I still recommend new bloods some TER if they want to read something big from the old school xD

Well this is turning out to be quite interesting indeed.

Well this only took like 4 years. :rainbowwild:

Well since I don't remember who Silent Jade was I guess I'll just have to reread the entire Empty Room then. Just because:pinkiehappy:

Ok... D, I hate you! :twilightangry2:
I don't know how the buck do you get to ALWAYS pull a heartstring in me... :fluttercry:
Keep up the motherbucking good job, damn it!

An Empty Room spinoff centered around everyone's favorite assassin? I must have missed seeing this through all the Gunsmoke. :twilightsheepish:

6762811 And there's more coming soon!
6742758 Don't hate me! It's not my fault the Lyra Heartstrings are pulled!
6738778 How did that go? :twilightblush:
6732922 I had to wait for Rarity to grow to the right age?
6729202 And I'll try to keep it that way!

Awesome as always, D!
I'll be waiting for the next chapter! :raritystarry:

Well.. you sure like to bring on the cute when baby Sweetie is around :unsuresweetie:.

Again, I feel like I'm missing something here. Who or what is Ardeur?

Edit: Nevermind. I reread some of the previous comments and found out for myself:twilightblush:

Love this so far. Looking forward to the next chapter.

Is the character Gaius based off of someone else? I can't help thinking that he's based off of the character Gaius from Tales of Xillia.

6869395 nope, my own invention.

Dude you made me tear up at the death scene.

Social Services are jerks and too narrow minded. You think it will be good for Rarity to be parted from her family after recently losing her mom? That leaves scars to. Perhaps even deeper ones.

6876247 But hey it does make for a good relatable scenario. Which makes our dear poor Rarity all the more likable. :raritywink:

And thank you Mr. D for providing a story that follows in my opinion on of the more interesting characters from TER. :raritystarry:

6726775 So should I read this first, or The Empty Room?

D, tell me this won't be cancelled just like TER's rewrite. :raritydespair:

Wanderer D

7668391 This definitely won't be cancelled. Just life making me slow down on most writing.

Should i read TER first? (assuming i will read both)

Edit: nevermind i looked like 3 below me

Nice Chapter, thanks for picking this back up. It's an interesting story. :raritywink:

8105193 I would recommend it... in order to avoid some spoilers. Think of this sequel more as a deeper look into one of the characters in TER. (Less typos and cringe-worthy writing tho!) :scootangel:

You tease us, Wanderer. Coming back to this after so long but only to give us so little. Please say that your going to be able to continue in a more regular fashion? :fluttershysad: We still want to see how this all plays out.

I do feel sorry for Rarity to end up in this. At least she finds good use for it.

"Oh, this is delicious! What is it?"

Gaius shrugged. "Fruit bat. It was one of your mom's favorites."

Rarity stopped chewing. "Wait, aren't fruit bats animals?"

Gauis gave her a look. “They’re Fruit Bats. They’re just like timber wolves… plants. Only these fly and eat more fruits."

”You can't possibly expect me to believe that," Rarity said, narrowing her eyes.

Is that a The Three Sisters reference I see? It certainly seems like one.:rainbowlaugh:

"discover a little crook"

I think you meant brook?

Don't know why I wasn't tracking this... good to see more of this bizarre world.

So, what to say here.

Well, things have picked up a little in these more recent chapters, but the first couple chapters are really awkward. It's apparent that you're not used to writing children, especially not in heavily emotional moments, and as a result Rarity can come off... awkwardly. Luckily, this story is quickly going to force Rarity to age, which will make this issue less apparent. Still, the first couple of chapters feel less like someone writing a child, and more like someone writing how they remember seeing a child played on TV. I think the biggest thing that bothers me is... kids are smarter than you think they are. If Rarity is old enough to pick up odd jobs to make some money, she's old enough to grasp mortality. Her break down makes sense, but her not understanding what her dad said doesn't. That makes sense for a four year old, but not for a six to eight year old, which I believe is the age Rarity is intended to be here. I'm assuming six because that's the right age for her to become a novice or apprentice, and I have a feeling assassins would keep that tradition alive.

Remember, kids have big ears. They hear more than you think they do, and they understand more than you'd want them to.
