How much can change in a hundred years? How much can change in a thousand? The day of the Nightmare’s defeat Princess Luna finds herself adrift, a thousand years away from the world she knew. With her home in ruins and Equestria changed beyond all recognition, is there anything left for her when even apples are strange?

I didn't know what to make of this story when I read it, but I liked it regardless.

We needs more fics about Luna 's perspective of present Equestria and how out of place she feels, besides "thous" and "thees " in her speech.

Nice, heart warming story .... I LOVE IT

This was fantastic! I can see why it was featured.

*tries to hug Luna* Now this story makes her absences in the show make much more sense. And I totally agree with her opinion of Red Delicious apples. :pinkiesick: Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, and McIntosh (sometimes called Macintosh) are superior.

You manage to show quite well just how great a gap of time the thousand years are. Very good work!

This is every bit as wonderful as it was in the Writeoffs, and then some. Love what you did with the ending.

“Sister,” I began, after a short moment. “Is she a fair?” I was unable to keep the anxiety from my voice.

I think you are missing a word here ("Is she a fair ruler?" most likely).

I really like it as well, though I'm not sure if the ending was really a net improvement; it still worked well enough, though.

Well done. Was glad to see this come up so soon.

Great story, not too long, a little sad at the start, but with a sweet ending. Thank you for another story billymorph. I'm a little sad that HiEC will not be continued, but at least we will still keep getting quality stories from you.

hi hi

I find it simply preposterous, and more than a little bit scandalous to even suggest that fair Applejack would be caught dead growing, uhg, Red Delicious apples at Sweet Apple Acres. :derpytongue2:

Seriously though, this is good stuff, I give it a thumbs up.

6420155 Thanks, great to hear you had fun.

6420319 Yeah, I've come across a few but they seem to be out of style these days. It's a really interesting topic to tackle, I might have to think about another.

6420492 :pinkiehappy:

6420533 Thanks!

6420572 Heh, yeah Luna needs more hugs, and an emoji.

6420888 Great to hear. Putting that huge gap into words was my inspiration for the piece so it's great to hear it came across well.

6420940 Glad to hear you like it. Your comment on the write-off story was a big help in unpicking why the last few paragraphs jarred, keeping it tied to the tight first person view really helped.

6420996 Good catch, there's always something lost in editing it seems. I'm leaning towards the ending being a slight improvement, but it would be good to hear from anyone else who read the write-off version as to what they think. It's always so hard to judge from the sharp end.

6421037 You're welcome, rest assured that I'll always keep writing away the best I can.

6421203 Heh, even the wisest of us can be taken in by fads, though maybe she just has an orchard set asside for the Canterlot types. Thanks for the thumbs up.

This is why in fanon she takes refuge in math and numbers, since those have not changed, unless they didn't have calculus before NMM and now they do...

6420572
Granny Smith is the only good apple.

Quite well done. Only part I thought was off was the description of the apple from Sweet Apple Acres. Changed sure but dry and inedible I thought was way off the mark. Everything else though was great.

6421378 What have Applejack, Big Mac and Apple Bloom done to you?

I remembered LOVING this story in the writeoff. The only one that got higher than it, personally, was The Ten Second Game. Very good job with this.

I love this so much. The way you showed her culture shock and the ending was great!

6421448
They had the gall to not be named after the best variety of apple.

Adorable little story and certainly a good example of why Luna wouldn't be seen for the entirety of the first season.
I would imagine most of the fruit would be a lot sweeter than she was used to, rather than dry, as sugar was/is often coveted in most societies. And size and sweetness be much easier as farming techniques were picked up over the years, so i would figure farmers would aim to increase both, but that's just my opinion on it.

I give it Five Spike Moustaches out of Five.
:moustache: :moustache: :moustache: :moustache: :moustache:

I really, really like the way you captured Luna and her exposure to modern times. The sheer alien mindsets people must have, and the way nothing at all is familiar. Even classical music is bizarre and unappealing. Not many fics go into much depth, and even a chapter of it is a treat.

An enjoyable story to read, I couldn't help but smile.

This is by far the best "Returned Luna" fic I've ever seen. I would love to see more of this!

Sequel please?

:trollestia:

Q: Where can I read write-off version? I want to see that other ending. Or is it that one in author's note?

Some small typos

it lifts a dozen times it’s weight.

Equestria was just a bunch of arguing little polities when you left, but now she’s straddles the continent.

Granny Smith apples here. I have no idea why Red Delicious apples are popular.

Cute, although Luna’s nickname for her sister is "Celie" according to "The Journal of the Royal Sisters"
Probably a call back to the time Luna was "Princess Selena"

Not Celly or Tia

You know what I want to see happen as well? :pinkiehappy:

Luna: "The ponies of today have grown lax in honing their abilities! Why, I wager no Unicorn these days has even a shred of skill in magical combat!"

Shining Armor puts up forcefield around all of Canterlot.

Luna: "... Alright, that is impressive."

Celestia: "Heh, you should see his sister."

Celestia had never had the time nor the patience to manage other ponies, she’d always just brought a keg with her wherever she went and was instantly beloved.

Now THAT'S real diplomacy! :rainbowlaugh:

Everything changes. But if there is at least one family member with you, you can always count on them being the family you need.
Well, at least in this case.

Wonderful read

very nice - always fun to see what goes through Luna's mind right after her return. I really can only imagine that it would be very traumatic to see a 1000 years has disappeared during your absence.

I was very pleasantly surprised. That was pretty dang good! Keep up the great work.

There isn't really anything left for me to say that hasn't already been said. Good job.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who detest red delicious.

I reviewed this story!

My review can be found here.

I didn't know people even use that for references
Cause every story I have ever read, Luna uses Tia, or Celly.

You don't see many stories about Luna showing just how long one thousand years really is. I really enjoyed this.

6421336 Actually, maths and numbers not changing in a thousand years is a bit of an anachronism. Modern arabic numerals (which is not something said often) were invented about 1,500 years ago and didn't reach Europe until the 10th century. So, depending on your head canon even the numbers ponies use have changed utterly in the time she's been gone. Calculus and most modern mathmatics is even more recent, about 17th century, so it's not looking good for Luna's love of maths.

6421438 Heh, Luna's taste in fruit is also 1,000 years out of date

6421471 Thanks, I still can't quite believe I won the Write-off.

6421477 Awesome, glad you enjoyed it.

6421743 Yeah, it's an interesting argument as to how fruit has changed over the years. Red Delicious are somewhat infamous for being a fruit bred for their appearance, not flavour, but I don't think there's many truely ancient strains around to compare these days.

6421793 Thanks, I'm glad Luna came over well for you. Getting behind a character's eyes properly costs me more stories than I care to admit, but it really seemed to work in this case.

6421921 Maybe sequel. There's certianly much more to cover with Luna's gradual readjustment to Equestria, though I might be treading old ground.

6421970 Good catch on all the typoes. It's the problem with editing, all the little fixes just seem to add more problems in sometimes :twilightblush: The original version is here.

6422101 I'll be honest, there's a limit to how much of the expanded universe canon I know or am willing to use.

6422204 "Sister, fetch us a sword. Let us see how well his concentration holds!"

6422474 Heh, popularity is easy if you have the bits or the booze. :trollestia:

Grammar can use a little polishing here and there, but otherwise it was a nice little read.

6421438 Red Delicious apples really do suck an awful lot. They're fairly dry, the skin is bitter, and the texture is pretty gritty.

Also keep in mind that she's probably used to tiny, hard, extremely sour apples.

6424708 I do believe I see your point. I am a fan of sour stuff myself.

Well, at least she's got a point of reference: Tia being a massive troll......

6424708 I like Red Delicious myself; I've never been fond of the more tart kinds, and they aren't as mealy as Macintosh. None of them hold a candle to Honeycrisp when it comes to eating apples...:yay:

6425156 Golden Delicious or GTFO.

Red Delicious is an apple cultivated for appearance over taste.

To put it simply, I don't think Applejack, who has massive experience with apples and prizes her apples for the taste (as well as using them in many baked applications) would even grow RD apples, let alone give them to a princess. It just seems so...forced, the entire apple thing.

It'd be like Luna being bored after seeing Rainbow Dash do some kind of lame, low-brow, easily repeated trick, instead of the Sonic Rainboom. Or Twilight offering a child's book as contemporary literature to Luna. Or Rarity giving some cheap dress as an example of modern fashion. Etc.

6425186 Advantage of living in upstate NY; apple farms within a short drive where you can get freshly picked apples cheaper than the supermarkets. Honeycrisp are only available in autumn, are their namesake (sweet without being overly strong, and a nice crunchy texture), and nearly the size of a softball. They'd make terrible cooking apples, but to sink your teeth into...

6425206 She'd have them. To sell to people who want them. And they're probably the best damn Red Delicious in the world.

She'd offer it to a princess 'cuz she'd assume that the princess would want one. Because Red Delicious are popular.

Besides, AJ probably likes them. She's got three of them stamped to her ass.
