Dear Journal,
Martha came to me earlier today about something. She filled me in on all the details that Jamie forgot to mention about what happened while I was separated and down. There wasn't much to add, but there were some things. One thing I did notice was when she got to the part where they went into the restaurant, she got a kind of face and hesitated. You know that face people get when they're debating with themselves over something? That's basically what she got. She chose to omit said "thing" which I know for reasons I'll explain later. However I did take note of that episode, and remembered it as she spoke. When it came to the end of her story, I pressed her about that. When I did, she spoke in another way. You know when you really want to tell someone something, but at the same time you don't? That weird paradoxical feeling that somehow makes perfect sense while you have it? That's what she showed off.
I further pressed into it, and eventually she gave in, to her obvious relief. The following is the conversation as I remember it.
Martha: Fine, fine, I'll tell you. When we killed the first two dogs, something... strange happened.
Leon: I gathered that from how you were acting. I also gathered it had something to do with Jamie.
Martha: ... yeah.
Leon: Is there something you want to tell me? Something you... maybe need to tell me?
Martha: God just shut up, I'll tell you.
Martha: ...
Leon: Martha...
Martha: I told you that Jamie killed a dog with a frying pan, right?
Leon: Yes, I commented then on how I was so impressed that a young child could crack a dog's skull so quickly with nothing more than a frying pan... then you reacted strangely.
Martha: Yes, well that's because Jamie didn't quite kill it so quickly. Or at least not the way you think he did.
Leon: Well what did happen?
Martha: Stop interrupting.
Leon: There were over ten seconds of silence. I didn't interrupt.
Martha: He smashed its head repeatedly into the ground.
Leon: I imagined that's what likely happened. That's what's needed to crack a skull when factoring in the strength of a-
Martha: Leon, shut up! It's not like that!
Leon: *nervously shifts* What do you mean?
Martha: *sighs* It was overkill. I imagine it was dead by smash four or five, but he must have done it ten times, give or take.
Leon: Oh...
Martha: That's not all. He was panting heavily when he stopped and he looked very angry.
Leon: *surprised* You don't think he-?
Martha: Bears hatred over the death of his mother? That's a likely diagnosis.
Leon: I'm talking about the other diagnosis...
Martha: I don't want to think about that one... *angrily topples lamp* God damn it, why is this so hard!?
Leon: I think because you know what happens if it's that other diagnosis.
Martha: ...
Leon: *softly* We have to put him down.
Martha: *growls* Like an animal.
Leon: We are animals, Martha.
Martha: *angry* We're humans!
Leon: Humans are animals too... now more so than ever.
What, are they saying he might have rabies or something? I don't get it.
6202658 Pretty sure they're worried Jamie may have gone as crazy as his mother...
6202673
They're dead. Nice knowin ya Leon!
... Sorry, 'put him down', I'm with Martha here, that's a STUPID way of putting it.
What? Why is this even a fucking option? He's really angry over his mothers death, he has some suppressed rage issues, I get that entirely, why the fuck are we jumping to 'putting him down' all of a sudden?!
Leon, stop being anti-human image damn it! Meet up with Alex and have her hit you over the head with a human book!
"I'm good at protecting people"
Suddenly...
"We need to put him down. Like an animal"
6203738 That's what they're hoping is the case. But the OTHER diagnosis is he's as insane as his mother. And if that's the case, they'd have to kill him to protect everyone.
6202673 Props to you, you got it.
6203840 Thank you! I'm glad someone brought this up. Granted not in the way I'd have liked, but still!
The main purpose of the section is the idea of what must be done to protect people, and when protecting becomes controlling. If Jamie's really as insane as his mother, then they'd have to kill him to protect those around him. Kill one and save three is a fair trade in their eyes (at least, the eyes of Leon and Martha.) They don't want to do it, but it must be done.
6203738 He's not anti-human. He believes humans are special. But he knows they're special animals. Humans are animal, like it or not. Even before the change.

Yeah, I can get that, but that makes me have to believe that the characters are idiots if they believe you can inherit mental instability, EVERYBODY here right now in mentally unstable from the 'kidnap and make guns out of parts' Martha to the survivor guilt Leon to the 'I'll make an army out of dogs!' Shelia. It's ironic that Shelia is the most stable one right now!
NONE of them have room to talk about mental stability right now. Jamie is in a rough spot, same as everyone else, I swear if the next scene is smothering him with a pillow I'm out.
I really want Martha and Leon to be the ones that find out about Night and that stallion.
At this point, pretty much every single char introduced so far has been dangerously insane, with at most superficial reasons for their violent actions.
This is sort-of-excusable if there is a powerful motivating force - for example, they are being driven insane by radiation, or they all woke up in a secure mental facility.
As it is, it pretty much gives the impression that the story-writing is more 'Robot Wars' - than FIM. Throw another char in, and when they die due to bits falling off or being decapitated, don't worry, a new one with an even shinier paintjob is going to be along in 5 minutes.

Eh, I get what its about. But its a little bit too fast to be jumping to conclusions.
I understand that because of his face, he may be labelled as crazy, but what if this is just something that will pass?
maybe rather than jumping to "kill," it should have been something... less at first, maybe find a jail cell, and if he starts to get worse, put him in there for a little while. But jumping STRAIGHT to putting him down kinda seems morbid. Not something I would think Leon would say.
6203998 What are you talking about? None of the characters are mentally unstable, except for possibly Jamie. None of them believe you ccan inherit it, but living with a psycho for years can be bad or he could be a psycho in his own riight.
6204717 Forgive me if I am confused.
6204755 Why does everyone think all the ponies are insane? Barbara was insane, but it was establiished thaat she wasn't right in the head before the Purge. Leon has only commited two violent acts, both in self defence. Jamie MIGHT be insane. Sheila is as peaceful as they come. Max never commited a violent act, and Martha only kills to protect. How are they insane?
6205481 They're gonna try to figure out whether it'll pass or if he's insane. But they only have three other ponies. Guarding him if he were insane would be dangerous and far too difficult, and if he got out more could die. Killing him would be necessary.

Geeze, your working towards a dark tag that doesn't even exist.
And what do you mean 'what do I mean'? EVERYONE here is unstable to some level, I even said it right in the previous review you replied to. Leon has experienced the death of the closet pony he can call a friend, had to bury the body of a murdered mare, and kill off another, who happened to have a kid who he feels tons of guilt over. And he nearly died.
Martha is a filly, so young yet so very critical and cynical, she has an attitude that only kids out of SERIOUSLY crippling situations should have, I don't know her story but I know for sure that a girl making guns adaptable to her anatomy shows that she isn't all right in the head, she locked Leon in a room and threatened him for goodness sake!! And believes in a curse of death hanging over him.
As I said, Shelia is the most stable, but I find it strange how stable she is considering she is in a different body, woke up in a empty wasteland of buildings, can talk to dogs, and she is... just happy, accepting all of this.
Sorry, but you have to admit that none of them are fully 100% stable, Jamie being killed off is just out of nowhere. If anything his brand of instability is useful when it came to SURVIVING a dog nearly RIP his throat out.
If I was in a situation I would be doing the SAME thing.
6205715 The one Night took several bites out of.
6206225 Is this from your story? I don't follow.
6205769 Leon: Feels guilty, and has certainly gone through shit, but he's not unstable by any definition of the word. If society still existed, he'd easily be a well functioning member of it.
Martha: easily the closest to unstable. Still though, she isn't. It's been established that she's a genius, she knows how to build and work guns. As for her attitude: that very near resembles my attitude, and I'm still what many would call a child. She's mentally advanced, not unstable. As for the locking and curse: she had to make sure he wasn't dangerous, and they're magical talking horses and animals are becoming intelligent. In the scenario, would a death curse be THAT hard to believe? Even so, she didn't believe it. She just had to be sure.
As for Sheila, she's not unstable. She's just strange. If a bunch of ponies can help her and be secure in their bodies, why can't she. It's almost like peer pressure. "They're cool with it, so I have to be too!"
While Jamie's possible insanity was admittedly useful their, they need to take every precaution to make sure it doesn't come back to bite them.
6206541 Yes, it is.
6206570 Sorry, I fell far behind on reading other side stories. I had like three I was reading and I fell so far behind that it all fell apart. Mind sending me a pm explaining it if it's relevant?
