The adventures of Rainbow Dash and her Daring Do tulpa? SOLD. :trollestia:

[12:02:09 AM] Zaponator: My new story is up, if anyone cares! http://www.fimfiction.net/story/267779/out-of-body

I care :D

Erf, that sentence is kinda giving me Big-O deja vu.

We're not gonna find out the whole world is the creation of one lonely girl who... *remembers the show was written by Lauren Faust on ideas she had as a little girl...* Son of a b-

I was just thinking this had better not turn into some sort of allegory of post-accident Dash accepting her own death or some nonsense like that. I don't think Zap is that emo, but the potential is there, what with the 'leaving home' bit and whatnot. :trixieshiftleft:

I guess that would make Daring into Dash's Virgil?

:derpytongue2:

6392577 They all become spirits and the story turns into that really bad Final Fantasy movie.... :fluttershbad:

I'm having too much fun with this now. :trollestia:

6392598
OH GOD, Squeenix bought out Zap! :raritycry:

This is... intriguing.

Hmm...

If this turns into an Austraeoh series-type story, I'll be simultaneously

That movie was always a really guilty pleasure for me, so... :trollestia:

Do a blind psychic test... it'd prove if she was real AND be a great prank on Twilight.

That summary reminds me of Cloak and Dagger.
I liked that movie, cheesy as it was.
I think I'll check the story out.

6392688 Rainbow Dash trots north... with a ghost.

6392946 Without the 'Ghost' part, but otherwise, yes.

I like how Dash dreams about something in the next chapter.

C-C-C-COMA!!

Oohh... one of the rare promising Daring Do fics has been spotted.
You have my attention.

I love this! And I totally knew Daring was a fellow Canuck!

I have one comment on the writing side. The periodic shifts of PoV to Daring basically break the whole tension as to whether she is real or just an illusion. I would have waited until something happened that proved her reality beyond the shadow of a doubt before using her as the PoV character (and thus explicitly stating her reality to the reader.)

And . . . I'm hooked already. This is really really good.

Well, now this is interesting! I'm liking how you do that little foreshadowy thing at the end of each, makes me think...

I've got a couple ideas for what's going on here, and I'm thinking Dash is not, in fact, up and walking around, let alone flying, but that she is lying in the hospital still, under the effects of a coma due to smashing her skull. Daring is her body's way of trying to revive itself, to bring her back to consciousness, since her brash, 'Let's keep moving!' attitude suggests more than what she lets on.

This 'Mirror of Souls' is also intriguing, I'm thinking it could be some sort of metaphor rather than an actual artifact, for the point where you reach the borderline of consciousness when awakening from something like that. She's looking into her own soul, and it's trying to help her get back to shape.

Or, she could just be drifting into the levels of mental breakdown as her mind struggles to keep up with the traumatic injury. Ergo, going craaaazy! :derpytongue2:

I want to wager on the former, it would explain why it seems like everything is stacked against her. There's also the question of why Daring seems to be confident her body will last without proper care and nutrients for as long as this journey will stretch. All of the danger falls on Dash's shoulders, which ties back into the point of Daring being Dash's way of coping with, and escaping from, a traumatic head injury and coma.

Of course, I could be completely in the wrong region, and it's something unassuming and world-building focused. :rainbowlaugh:

Eagerly awaiting more of this little morsel.

Better than the adventure of Rainbow Dash and her Daring Do dakimakura, eh?

Now, here's a funny thing...
I already have the story all plotted out, and the next chapter partially done, in which this issue does actually come up. I swear, I wrote it before seeing comments about it!

6392688
If I had the power to pump out daily chapters, I would. :rainbowwild:

6392933
Oh man, I always loved that movie, but I'd forgotten it in the years since I last watched it.

Ever wonder if I knew you would automatically think she was real if I threw that in?
Unless I knew you'd know I knew, so I pretended to not know you'd know I knew and threw that in to make you think you knew something I didn't know.
But there is the possibility I knew you'd catch on to the fact that I knew you'd know I knew that you knew I really knew...
You never know! :pinkiecrazy:

I'm really happy you like it! I will admit I was kinda nervous launching into another long-fic, but the fact that people are interested is super encouraging. :pinkiehappy:

6395548 I'm a theoretical conspiracy theorist.

6395548

Better than the adventure of Rainbow Dash and her Daring Do dakimakura, eh?

Wait, maybe that's what it is, and it's not that everyone can't see Daring, they were just awkwardly avoiding looking at the daki as concussed Dash dragged it around town, talking to it.

Is this story based off of Calvin and Hobbes?

This is going to be one hell of a coincidence if Daring turns out to be a hallucination.

Also, are the dreams at the end going to end up being a prophecy or something?

rainbow dash dreamt of flying far far away

That little quote had an immense amount of power to it for some reason
I'm not sure why but it just resonated with my soul...
Ah well, on to the next chapter

6393154 You win this round...

Daring wasn't quite done. "And- and then you have, like, peanut butter and jam sandwiches!?" She barked another laugh. "We're on an adventure, girl! We might not see a fridge for weeks! You're not gonna want to touch those things after a few days!"
Rainbow crossed her arms and huffed, only for her ears to fold back against her head. "…okay, so maybe I hadn't quite thought of that."
"Pffwa-hahah!"
Rainbow wilted lower and lower as Daring continued to laugh, until the senior adventurer finally took notice of the younger mare's crushed expression.

RAINBOW DASH IS HEAVY!!!!!
+poot dispencer here

Rainbow Dash dreamed of flying far, far away.

Instantly made me think of Austraeoh.

This is an interesting concept, for sure. Liked, favorited, tracking.

listening to the dark side of the moon syncs up awesomely.:pinkiehappy:

Rainbow rolled her eyes. "What kind of normal pony just has rope?"

I bet pinkey has rope:ajsmug: probably in the kitchen, you know for rope emergencies. :trollestia:

The advertisement below the story is advertising a Daring Do plush doll for $17.90.
Not sure if coincidence or not. :rainbowderp:

.....................Kinky

You've captured my interest, Zap.

Let's see where you lead us in this adventure with Dash and Daring.

I really wanted to like this, however it only seems to be going one of two ways. Rainbow Dash is dead or dying or she just straight up left Ponyville on the word of what may or may not be a hallucination.

There seems to be plenty of other interest though so I'll just slip away leaving no mark on this story.

"Caneighdian" ??? :rainbowlaugh: OMG that was the funniest part of the whole page!!! :pinkiehappy:

6397593 haha i was referencing mad max the black :rainbowlaugh:

Targeted ads are targeted, for 17.90 I can get my own daring do plush :derpytongue2:

So, I'm seeing a lot of theories here. I'm going to make a theory that goes in completely the opposite direction of everyone else's, and it's probably going to be wrong, but to hell with it.

Rainbow Dash isn't hallucinating. Neither is she in a coma, coping with her traumatic injury. In fact, she never even hurt herself.

Instead, it's Daring who's having the fever dream.

Think about this; Daring's shown incredible depth of character, and has completely defied many things that Dash would imagine her to be. Furthermore, she's talked extensively about archaeological facts that Dash wouldn't know a thing about (that is, facts that have never been in her head to begin with). Because of this, we know that Daring isn't a figment of Dash's imagination.

But what about Rainbow Dash? All that we've seen character-wise is her brash attitude, unpreparedness, and loyalty, all traits about her with which Daring is familiar. Everything that has been shown of Dash is information that Daring would easily have discovered with some research (the kind that one would do if they wrote her into a book).

Maybe Daring really did encounter this Mirror of Souls, and her soul is now trapped in it, unable to do anything besides contemplate. Alternatively, she may have suffered a brutal head injury herself and she's the one who's comatose.
So how would her mind deal with this? She has no control over her body, so her brain is interpreting that as helplessness, and makes her mental projection a ghost, unable to interact with anyone or anything. Naturally, that's a very harmful pattern of thought, so her mind turns to a simple defense mechanism; recalling pleasant social interactions. Now, who was the only individual that Daring has had a pleasant social interaction with in recent memory?

However, even with that, Daring's interactions with Dash have been brief and few, and the mind can only go over the same memory so many times before it loses its potency. To remedy this, her psyche has fabricated a complex set of scenarios where she can have further interactions with Rainbow Dash, despite the fact that part of her subconscious is still asserting the fact that she's completely helpless.

These poor trees need some Valium to handle their chronic seizures.

"Best to make it into the tree cover if you don't wanna freeze your feathers off. Tally ho!"

Daring just went from Indiana Jones to David Livingstone in 2.3 seconds. Impressive.

Really nice story.I can't wait for the next chapter:pinkiehappy::coolphoto:

Here's my theory:
The Mirror of Souls put Daring's soul into Rainbow's body without removing Rainbow's, and having two souls in a single body is stressing Rainbow's body to the point where she's stuck in a coma. The adventure is taking place all in Rainbow's head as a coping mechanism, and it's also a way for Rainbow to interact with Daring in some capacity. Daring herself is lying about what really happened so as not to worry Rainbow.

As beautiful as the forest was, the lack of wildflowers meant there wasn't really anything decent to eat around.

Too good for pinecones, eh? Piffle. :trixieshiftright:

YAY, the story isn't one of those dump posts and forgotten about. You got a fan here mate, keep up the good work. :D
