The reason Owlicious was able to speak was because his parents built their nest right next to a cinema. When he was still young, he used to enjoy the warm brought to him by his parents and watch the black and white film screen at the same time. Unlike his brothers and sisters, he really enjoyed the movies. Having nothing much else to do, he tried to memorize the script and sentences spoken by the ponies on screen, and after years he was able to speak just like every pony else.
The day Owlicious met Twilight was the day the cinema got taken down. He had to leave the place he had lived in and loved so much. By that time he had grown into a excellent Owl, capable of feeding himself. His parents and siblings had already left for another city looking one after another, eventually leaving himself flying over this small town.
Inside the town center there was a huge house made of trees. The green leaves and branches were perfect to take a rest. So that day, Owlicious decided to take a break on the branches. He landed on a branch next to the second floor's glass window and started to brush his own feathers.
He suddenly stopped because he just noticed a filly sitting next to the window. He didn't see her in the first place, because Owl are rare animals, and usually a pony would scream or at least chatter at the sight of them. But the strange filly sitting inside didn't seem to have noticed Owlicious at all.
Owlicious watched the strange filly for quite a while. It was his first time seeing any pony at such a close distance. The filly had light purple coat. Her mane was dark purple and smooth. She was not doing anything, just sitting next to the window, gazing upon the horizon.
Owlicious wanted to flap his wings, but he quickly thought about an even better idea to catch her attention.
"Ahem!" Owlicious cleared his throat loudly on purpose.
"Who... who's there?" The filly was frightened by the sudden noise. She shook and asked with fear and curiosity.
That was when Owlicious realized why the filly didn't react to him at all. Usually when he was this close, he could see his own reflection in the other pony's eyes. However, the filly's eyes were empty. Her beautiful face had two small dent at where the eyeball was suppose to be. She was blind.
"She is the perfect pony to talk to!" Owlicious thought. Since he learnt the Pony's language, he had never got a chance to actually have a proper conversation. Even though he really wanted to, pony had always regarded Owls as mystical and unlucky creatures, and he had never got a chance to approach any pony. But this filly right here could not see, so she would not even know that she was talking to an Owl.
"Dear ms, how are you doing today?" Said Owlicious.
The filly's attention turned to him, "Who? Who are you?"
"Don't worry, i mean no harm. I just wanted to chat."
The filly stood up and held out one of her hooves. She walked around the room as if she wanted to find the source of voice.
Since the window was half opened, so Owlicious just silently glided into the room and rested on the back of a chair. The room was filled with colorful shapes and books, but there were merely decorations.
"Don't try to find me. I am simply here to have a normal chat."
The filly gave up the search. She lowered her hooves and sat down on her soft bed.
"Your voice is incredible. It sounded like nothing i have heard from another pony before. How do you do that? Oh and also, please remember to knock on the door before you enter next time."
"Ah, my apologize. Because of my body is... special, i don't even know how to use a fork or a knife. Let alone other proper manner."
"Eh? Then how do you eat?"
"Well I just shove them down my throat without my win... i mean hooves."
The filly giggled, "You are so random."
"Unknown sir, it had been quite a while since i had talked to any one. I am really thankful of you."
Since then, Owlicious would go talk to the blind filly once in a while. At first he was just practicing his conversation skills, but soon he realized that he was happy around her. He found out that her name was Twilight, and she was different from other ponies. Other ponies would throw rocks at him, but she had a kind heart.
He saw Twilight sitting alone next to the window yet again. Smooth morning breeze gently brushed over her mane. Owlicious sat on the tree looking at her for a while, and finally he decided to speak, "Twilight!"
Like a warm cup of coffee in a freezing winter, Twilight's face lit up with warmth and joy, "Ah, you forgot to knock again."
She was not actually complaining, it was more like a warm welcome from an old friend. Owlicious felt happiness. He had never felt anything like this since the moment he broke out of that egg. Her parents only feed him with worms and occasionally sing a bad song or two. His siblings were more or less the same, knowing only how to be an Owl and nothing else, and they had always had trouble communicating with each other.
Owlicious tried to remember some of the parts from the movies that he saw and tell them to Twilight. It was all made up stories, but Twilight enjoyed them a lot. Owlicious decided to not tell Twilight about his true identity, ever. He hide the fact about himself being just an Owl, and made up his life with all kinds of stories from various movies.
One day, Owlicious decided to ask Twilight something he had been wondering for a long time,
"Twilight, why were you blinded?"
"It was when i was just a filly. I was going to the church one day. The window of the church was made up of really colorful glasses, and they were beautiful. I opened my eyes up as wide as i can and was just staring at them. But then suddenly the glasses broke. I didn't know how it broke, maybe someone threw a rock at it or maybe its a small meteor. Any how, I didn't even have time to think, I just thought that all the falling colorful glass was beautiful."
Twilight pretended that she was simply telling a story, but Owlicious could tell that she was sad.
"The next moment the broken glasses had stabbed my eyes. Even though i was sent to the hospital immediately, but they could do nothing except stopping the bleeding. My last sight was filled with colorful glasses pieces, it was in fact very beautiful."
Owlicious heard some pony coming upstairs into Twilight's room.
"I had enjoyed our chat a lot, but I am terrible sorry. have to leave now. "
Despite Twilight's effort, Owlicious flew outside the window. But he didn't fly too far. He stopped on a branch near by, and hide himself behind the leaves, listening.
The door opened, and it sounded like Twilight's mother's voice, "Was any pony here? I thought i heart voices."
Even thought Owlicious couldn't see Twilight, he could imagine her thoughts. He was a friend who would appear out of nowhere and leave immediately when any pony came in. What does she really think of him?
Owlicious spread open his wings and flew up high into the sky. He saw the entire town being cover in a gray shadow as the dark clouds gather around the sky.
"I need to let Twilight see!" He didn't know when did it start, but his small bird heart was filled with thoughts for Twilight, so full that he could not take in anything else.
He remember that every time when Twilight talked about her blindness she pretended to be fine with it, and she pretend that being blind is nothing to her. But Owlicious knew that she felt sadness. Because every time when he talks about the sky, the green field or the blue ocean, the look on Twilight's face said that she really wanted to see them.
"Recently, even my dream have turned dark."
Owlicious remembered Twilight saying once. Its just that she tried to hide her sadness. She immediate switch to another happy topic, such as how nice and soft something she had touch felt, or what new food she had tried and how amazing it was.
"Twilight, is the darkness scary?"
Owlicious once asked. Twilight hesitated for a while, and then nodded in silence.
Owlicious flew towards the gray sky. If he can once more show Twilight light and color, he would give up anything, even if that means staining his feather with blood.
To see, she needs good eyes. Owlicious flapped his smooth wings and flew towards the town.
