TheOnly

My world will never be the same, and neither will those who know that it won't. Seeing is believing. Believing is deceiving.

A quick fic about me (not ACTUALLY me) and the universe. Written simply because I mind-fucked myself.

Written based on something one of my friends said to me, and I took the the very extremes.

If you didn't understand it, well, there's not much I can do to help.

Ahhh the questions that can not be answered.... wonderful story

Well. This was a rather stimulating read. Definitely thought provoking at the very least.

What is past space? That's easy. There is nothing past space, yet the universe is not infinite. It doubles back on itself in a really weird four dimensional way. The usual metaphor at this point is that of a balloon's surface.
The fic itself is very thought provoking, though. I figured it was some sort of experiment, why else would Charles be called an idiot so often; if not to call attention to the fact that he was the only one who knew what was going on?

Someone downrated because they didn't understand. :ajbemused: But this story is awesome!

This sounds like something I'd read in a lit class. Minus the ponies, of course :) Very existential! I like philosophy in pony-form.

564647 It's funny because my friend told me the thing that stimulated this story in my lit class...

The more you know.

I can't be the only one who thought of White Box while I was reading this...

Jesus.
My mind has been blown :rainbowderp:

You know, I've contemplated this question for quite a while, and I never could answer it. This story does a very good job at articulating my view of it. There's something, but it is beyond our comprehension because we have not yet glimpsed the outside. Once we have seen it, we may not even believe that it is true simply because we are conditioned to believe in what we know and what is around us. Suddenly, something completely different and new is introduced, and some people don't take very kindly to that. When your life is a box, and you are unaware that something exists outside your box, and that thing that exists outside is suddenly made known, what do you do?

I will admit that it would have been nice, looking at this from a story standpoint and not a philosophical lesson, to have seen the reactions of those five who were stuck in the box.

565002 If I attempt to send this to EQD I'll add their reactions.

I do wonder; What DID happen to the ponies after they recovered from their experiences? Were their memories restored? If not, did they have a nervous breakdown while being re-introduced to society? WERE they reintroduced to society?

Thought-provoking questions aside, I enjoyed how this one was written, and the curious, somewhat ambiguous ending.

I wish it was longer.
Good, and thought-provoking. Not to say I haven't considered it. Actually, I've entertained the thought many a time.
have a thumb.

It's not really that hard I just look up or twist my neck so I can look back.

565247 I forgot a comma! Silly me.

Hmm still new here and I don't know how to reply to comments but...... THERES NO FOURTH DIMENSION!!!! We have 3 spacial dimensions and 1 time dimension (currently known) but anyways a 'fourth dimension' would cause the universe to collide onto itself into one point. Of course many ponies/people (not sure to 'ponify' this response or not) have different veiws on the rest. anyways some say there are contless other universes lying in an infinite quantum foam while other stick to the.... I think its either 8 days or 7 days........ the 7 days of creation story. But its up to your imagination and your endless mind to toy with that idea. Try find the square root of negative 3. Hmmm I also need to aprove this story. I enjoy your stories TheOnly. Very interesting but most of them are hilarous. :rainbowlaugh: and:pinkiehappy:

...The machinations of my mind are an enigma. Mind=blown, sir. Very, very interesting piece.

565247 Hey, I don't mean to be a bother, but how do you quote things like that?

565460 [youtube=NwWOSQbfUUE]

Where is my Stephen Hawking? I need scientific answers! You sir are a ether a} a genius. Or b} A man that spends too much time with his thoughts. Great job!

That was a very interesting read. And I'm still trying to wrap my head around it.

565276 Time causes the universe to collapse in on itself? You, sir, will never understand string theories.

Wow. That makes a lot of sense.
As for the author's note, what do you think is past space? Are we just some aliens test? Or is god some 5th grader and are we all his science project?

Ah, the questions we must ask ourselves every day. Is our universe real, or a simulation which we were put in by our forerunners? Are we dreaming right now? What lies past what we know? Does something exist if we cannot see, feel, touch, taste, or smell it?

565946 I'd rather not think about that till after death, thank you.

Past space you say?
Well, infinite and beyond silly!

Plato's Allegory of The Cave springs to mind. Nicely done, I've pictured this sort of thing before. Really well thought out, and well reasoned.

Space is nothing, it's a vacuum, the absence of matter. So the only way that nothing (space) could have a boundary, is if it is bound by something (matter). And of course, we can only guess whether or not space is infinite or bounded by something, because we simply cannot see that far. You could get all 4th dimensional and make wild theories, but again, you'd only be guessing. It'd be different if you were inside a box and you could literally walk to the end of the universe and see there's a wall there.

well this was thought provoking, even though I'm not one for philosophy or theology, this was interesting and made me think.

Good work.

Well... this was great. If this doesn't get featured, I'm going to give up on humanity.

Like some others, this wasn't a new concept to me. But it was presented well, and I really enjoyed it. It's only real flaw is there's not a lot reason to ponify it.

I want to say more, but... I can't. It was interesting, and it was self-contained; it didn't leave you wanting for more, like stories such as background pony or white box did. Also, I would have hated it if there wasn't a point, but there was, so I love it.

...:yay:

Hmm, this story reminds me of Plato's 'allegory of the cave' and I think your story is cool. It has something artsy.

Also what is past space? The truth is: nobody really knows. There are a couple of theories; The most populair one is that you can see the three dimentional space of universe as the two dimentional surface of a donut. No matter what direction you go, you will always return to your starting position (as long as you go in a straight line).
PS: This theory allows for a maximum distance between two objects, while also making sure you never run into a border. Much like the surface of he earh. :twilightsheepish:
PPS: If you wonder why the shape is a donut instead of a sphere: google the Hairy Ball Theorem. :twilightblush:

The scientists moved aro---

OH MAN SOMETHING DEEP IS GOING TO HAPPEN! :pinkiegasp:

"Take the entire pony species and put them in Equestria. They'll believe that space is infinite."

I knew it.

"Author's Notes: What is past space?"

There is a place where the universe ends, even though it would be impossible to get to.
Since the Bible said that God made the universe, (past tense there) that would suggest that the universe is not infinite and even if we had a machine or something to go out there, it would take millions of light-years to get there, and by then the Earth would probably not exist anymore. (Book of Revelation anyone?)

565768 No, I meant that a fourth spatial dimension, there is a time dimension undoubtively. And Of course I can understand string theory, although I prefer general relativity with quantum mechanics although the two cant really fit together. Sure I havent gone into college yet but I love physics and I have been studying it for half my life. Just a misunderstanding i guess in the first comment I posted. Anyways back to memory pending...

569883 Yes a misunderstanding. I do not see how a fourth dimension would collapse the universe if it is one which it the dimension of Movement.

Interesting... fascinating... Cruel... thought-provoking..

Quite intriguing.

569883Honeytiger does not like physics. Physics is scary.:fluttershysad:

2403052 Way to re-open an old post.... wow 47 weeks ago.... Wow. I've been a brony for that long :rainbowhuh: Wow.... Anywho Season 3 was amazing :pinkiehappy:

Bravo, my old friend. :pinkiesad2:

I don't want to sound mean but, why is this here? Why is this a pony story? When I wrote a Bravestarr/MLP crossover where Applejack ends up on New Texas, I got accused that Applejack could have been replaced by anyone without changing the story. This story deserves that far more. There is nothing in it that needs a pony setting. It involves no known characters, it makes no use of the pony abilities, it does nothing to expand the setting of the show.

It's not a bad story, in fact, as a vignette that asks what the limits of the unicverse are it is fairly well done, though the ending is a bit weak, but this idea has been done in things like 'The Tunnel under the World' by Fredrick Pohl, 'Captive Universe' by Harry Harrison, and the film 'The Truman Show'. Unlike this, all those have a viewpoint character discovering the appearent limits of the universe are artifical, and their reactions.
