Things don't always go as we plan them. For one changeling, caught between two nations and two cultures, such a thing could mean having a door slammed in your face - or having one opened.

(This story can be read stand-alone, but is also part of a larger continuity of stories. For a complete breakdown, click here.)

I totally and unironically ship it.

Complete? Its more fell like start of longer story uh?

5397273 As stated in the description, it's a sidestory, and the first part of a sequence of sidestories. I'll be posting the others soon, hopefully.

as one shots?

I'm disguised as one of the Cultural Exchange changelings

Wait, what? Why would he disguise himself as a changeling? :rainbowderp:

“How long until the Feeder caste sees fit to send an official envoy on one of these Cultural Exchange trips?”

Oh. There we go :rainbowlaugh:

He's grinning again. What's with this pony?

Ponies are generally not experts at distinguishing changeling castes. I'm fairly sure he's a fellow changeling, brah :facehoof:

“That's horrible! You had just gotten a new home and new friends, and now... and it's not like you can go back to the hive, now, either! They would brand you a traitor!”

In light of the treaty, that's kinda harsh :unsuresweetie:

“It's a funny story, actually. Remember the big invasion of Canterlot?”

“No. I've completely forgotten.”

“Hey, no need for the attitude.”

Hah! :rainbowlaugh:

“Someday, we need to share that story with the Infiltrators! They'd all get a kick out of it... a Worker manages to infiltrate Equestria as an animal and live off of affection... That's the stuff legends are made of!”

Thus again proving that Fluttershy is best pony! :moustache:

One tiny remark:
> Of all the rotten luck..
Incomplete ellipsis at the end. Or double period. Not sure what you intended.

Well, this does feel like an introduction chapter... if the other ones will revolve around the same characters, it might be better to make it one story. There are rules against posting single chapters of the same thing as separate stories :unsuresweetie:

5453604 Thanks for the help spotting minor errors. I intend to do a clean-sweep of the Book 1 stuff after I post the Book 2 prologue short-story and Book 2 (Which I hope to do today). For reference, while this was part of a 3-fic sequence (And part of the overall 'verse), it's held as a standalone short-story for several reasons, not the least of which is that the latter stories don't revolve around the same characters, or have the same kind of arc at all.

Consider Fidanity > Harsh Light as an example. While the two are linked in a narrative sense, they're quite different stories, with a different message underlying each. I actually had a chat with an admin to make sure that this posting style was alright before I started posting the sidestories, but I do appreciate the concern.

I'm glad you seem to be enjoying the stories. This last one I wrote while I was completely exhausted, so I expected I might stumble a bit, but I'd been working on it for so long I just had to get it out there. I think the exhaustion I felt worked well with the attitude Krittith has in the story, anyway.

For reference, the rest of TQ&I up to Chapter 20 was written a long time ago, so if you want a sneak-peek before I post it to FIMFic, fire me a private message and I'll link you to the GDocs. Otherwise, here's hoping I start posting again today!

Heh. If I had the time to actually read it I might give it a look in advance, but I'm sadly horribly behind on my reading in general, so I'll pass :facehoof:

But, glad to see more is coming :pinkiehappy:

“I did! I did! I disguised myself as one of her animals, and I lived in the Everfree Forest – well, the edges of it – and lived off of her love for a long time! Well, until Twilight came by one day and undisguised me.”

:rainbowlaugh:
More changelings should do that, really.

Wait, what? Why would he disguise himself as a changeling?

Different castes have different colored eyes. It's the same mythos as Cheersalis.

I said, "why", not "how". And my comments are just my thoughts while reading through; the next bit of the comment answers the question

6551792 Well that's what I get for commenting while tired.

Interesting little story.

Interesting expressionistic style tied to this perspective. Sense-impressions more than an actual narrative, so more like how people actually experience life. Neat.

As for the story itself, I have to admit a bit of confusion. I'm guessing that the castes are more areas of specialization than be-all, end-all exclusive areas of functionality, which is why Inflitrators can feed directly and Feeders can infiltrate. Or something. :applejackunsure:

Still, it's actually good to see that the melding of the two cultures isn't going flawlessly. This is a more realistic route; some folks just can't get past the whole "hostile invasion" thing, and I can't really blame them for it.

6851057 'Infiltrator' is a job, rather than a caste. Sort of like how all 'musicians' are of the Maker caste in the hive, infiltrators are generally a type of Feeder.

And a legendary story was written :raritywink:

Seeing the different jobs and castes outside the context of the queens is pretty nice stuff. Now that I've poked around the continuity again, at last, I think that the one issue I take with it is the dialogue. There is quite a bit of talking heads in the stories I've been binging today. While there usually are only 2-4 characters in these, it does help to know who is talking at what point. Otherwise, everything looks fine.
