• I'm one book short of a trashy paperback trilogy, written entirely in crayon. "Dense and vague, yet unimaginably interesting." - Regidar.

• Rarity develops an exciting new way for ponies to be socially dynamic, incorporating innovative and revolutionary ideas that should improve both communication and commerce – yet it quickly threatens to destroy the entire world. Cover art by Shivannie, whose exceptional work was rightfully featured on Equestria Daily's Drawfriend. She's also my beloved sister-in-crime and should be rightfully feared, just to be clear.

Would this be inspired by your recent foray into IRC?

~Skeeter The Lurker

Dammit Rarity!

Honestly, I could see more of Twilight inventing the whole magic social hub instead of Rarity. But I'll wait to see where this goes.

7086803

Yes. This is the fault of #fimfiction in IRC.

7086762

WHAT!?

7086806

Again, she ruins everything.

I wanted to ask "why?", but the answer scares me.

Having said that, everyone needs to see that link. EVERYONE.

7086831

I've never found Twilight to be socially aligned - just ask Moondancer, for example - and for the purposes of business and local gossip... I have to side with Rarity in regards to a possible social network. Who else is as interested in the benefits of social reward?

Let's see what happens.

7086866 True... but it wouldn't stop Twilight coming up with something to help others. I just don't see Rarity herself coming up with it herself, just more like being the ones that become too obsessive with the features.

7086873

That's precisely the idea behind this - Rarity shouldn't be able to do this. However, it's exactly what she would want, and it strays from what Twilight would consider for being so socially driven, mm?

I think that it's about time that other unicorns show their magical potential - Rarity isn't a wizard, but she's driven and savvy and... I think her work ethic is represented through canon to be adventurous and dynamic. Although obviously a work of fiction, doesn't it merit on her potential at least? A heroine, an artisan and a social importance... this is what should make her life less complicated, and that's what empowers evolution. In my opinion.

Thoughts?

7086909 I still really can't get behind Rarity creating this thing (at all), atleast not by herself. I'm just going to leave it at that. The obsessive part, okay, I can drive with that. But so far, I can only seeing it being for unicorns and alicorns unless maybe Rarity goes to Twilight and ask how to make it possible for earth ponies and pegasi to join in (if magic is still involved to pull up the magic board). So maybe you could work that in with the other races being curious and jealous of wanting to join in but Rarity finds herself in a predicament.

7086927

Well, you nailed it on the head right there:

"So maybe you could work that in with the other races being curious and jealous of wanting to join in but Rarity finds herself in a predicament."

Obviously the idea isn't complicated. Yes, the execution is crude and isn't viable in a lasting way, true. When this is presented to Twilight, your arguments will definitely be an important part of how things progress. However, the idea of micro managing isn't often the product of a ruling class - if Twilight was at all interested in business or general social escapades, she would have done this first. However, for a local business to flourish - and trying to expand the lore behind "common" unicorns and their use of magic - this to me makes sense. In a "following an idea yet what the heck was I thinking!?" way.

I like the way you think. Please, keep offering ideas. I'm already seeing how your observations will change my original story path, so... seriously, thank you!

7086952 Other than saying the idea will probably be bigger than Rarity intended or it has the Social Network movie plot written all over it. That's pretty much what happens when characters make these types of services, they end up being way more than they can handle. It becomes too predictable.

So... Rarity gets many offers from companies to buy her idea but she for some reason holds out. That's one idea I can shed.

7086968

What's funny is I've never seen The Social Network. So it won't have that story line, but... well, it is fairly obvious, from the foreword to what I've revealed through our conversation, that it will go badly. Maybe? Let's see, because the ending is still a coin flip for me.

I quietly love Rarity. I do wish her success, yet... for the sake of a good story, I might be hesitant to grant such.

mrk

Interesting. Let's see where this goes.

7086848
It is? Strange, I could've sworn you tried to upload a story with this exact name months before you stumbled into IRC and then awkwardly slinked away. At any rate, I might not be able to read this little thing tonight, due largely to a number of stupid life choices I've made in the last 24 hours: going to work at my third shift job, coming back home and watching some Youtube while knocking back five shots of whiskey in about four minutes in preparation to go to the movies, and walking to a movie theater half-an-hour away to watch Batman v. Superman: Ow, the Edge.

So yeah, I will definitely read this tomorrow morning, or tonight if I have any strength left in me for a 2,300 chapter. After all, I owe you this story, and you owe me that other story.

7087157

IRC made me change it, but in a good way. Mostly the next two chapters.

Whiskey? You're a brave soul.

7087241

What are you talking about? Whiskey (or specifically, bourbon) is my liquor of choice, apart from the occasional Ciroc vodka and The Kraken black spiced rum.

"Geniu-us!" the fashionista crowed, dancing in place. "After studying the method in which specific races of dragons were able to transfer certain materials over great distances with their flame breath after careful magical coordination – and I assure you, the months of work required to figure such nearly exhausted me to the bone – I was able to isolate the components that could enable such a method! Certainly, I w

ould not have accomplished any of this without the help of my special little dragon. Such a darling! Always willing to assist, no matter my demands!"

I've seen all kinds of typos in my days of reading pony, but this is something special. I understand making the mistake (hitting the 'quote' button at the top), but how do you miss that in proofreading?

"You want me to... WEAR something?" the winged mare appeared dumbfounded.

Okay, now I know I remember that line from somewhere in this story.

So yeah, Rarity's business venture has "What could possibly go wrong?!" written all over it, and Rainbow only scratched the surface of what could possibly go wrong.

I'm also curious about how Rarity and Spike worked out the mechanics of their social networking project. If the special paper is laced with dragonfire/dragonspit, then are the messaging boards simply to have all these messages posted in public places? Why not just lace the boards themselves with dragon magic? *messaging boards burn down* Okay, then what about making portable messaging boards that ponies can buy for themselves, basically like the PCs, tablets and smartphones we use? *Fires spread through Ponyville as portable messaging boards burst into flames. In other news, Sweetie Belle pours bowl of cereal in attempt to make breakfast; cereal bursts into flames.* Ah, the perils of R&D.

Also funny how Rarity complains about paying an exorbitant postage whether your mail has to be delivered locally or long distance, yet ponies are going to have to buy her special dragonslobber paper to participate in this. I mean, hell, the price of social networking in our world is basically electricity and internet access, but other than that, it's virtually free.

My phone did that, after I'd posted. Gimme some slack, for the love of Celestia! PLEASE!

I'm at a friend's party right now, and I don't know anyone. My social anxiety is in full swing. I'll comment properly later.

"It's his spit,"

I've seen some strange things done with world building and spit. Besides the, ahem, more questionable activities I could readily skim off the top of my head[1], those instances of magical spittle include gryphon spit accelerating healing and changeling spit increasing sensitivity like those fancy shampoos that make your scalp tingle. But this takes the cake for strangest.

So does that mean if Spike kisses Rarity, we're likely to see her instantly transported to Saddle Arabia? Or does this require Twilight to magically supercharge those wittle dwagon wips to get the desired effect of accidental high adventure in a massive and eternal sandbox?

After a great deal of rigorous tests, requiring Spike to rehydrate several times every hour over the period of days

Not gonna lie. First thing to pop up in my head was an episode of Two Stupid Dogs involving "spit soup", Little Dog badgering Big Dog to spit in a bucket pretty much the entire episode. Because soup. Such fond childhood memories, eh?

Yeah, this whole social network thing is a trollfest waiting to happen. Money is no obstacle for the determined. I can see it now: Rarity crashes a gaming night to deliver an order of dresses to a client who claims they never ordered from her. But the pizza delivery colt arrives at the same time with the 'za they did order, so things aren't all that bad.

[1] By that I mean spit bubbles :B

7100268
But I thought you were the one in my mind :twilightoops: :pinkiehappy:

Shouldn't it be his phlegm that the letters are coated in? It is fire breath not fire spit.

7131670

Well, this is a fair point. Phlegm would make more sense, except - without changing the grossly accepted anthropomorphic physiology most believe ponies, wingless baby dragons, and other muggles adhere to - phlegm would be hard to extract. I mean, if Spike was sick all the time... hm. Well, the basic premise is in place. If there is a need to explain a more scientifically plausible method, I guess I could headcanon in that dragons produce copious amounts of phlegm.

Ew. EW. I er... I'll come back to that suggestion another time. GROSS.

7089783

*Three weeks later*

That must be some party.

I've developed a network to affect how we share information, whether industry or community and everything in between!

You know you're talking to :rainbowhuh: right, Rarity? Keep it simple.

7131670
7138233
It would be totally in character for Spike to get sick if Rarity asked him to. He would stay sick for her, too. Or she could convince him to start smoking. Wow, this got dark fast.

All for dragon phlegm gold.

7199993

Rarity, the Element of GeneromakingSpikedostuffsity.

... doesn't roll of the tongue, exactly.

7194623

Rarity gets carried away. A lot.

So this system would require a steady supply of dragon saliva in order to work?

What could possibly go wrong? :pinkiecrazy:

I can already see everypony getting addicted in no time :rainbowlaugh:

Anyway, this was interesting chapter, exploring the basic mechanisms of the boards and parchment. The one thing biting on my mind is this; will the spit-parchments travel between the boards (or maybe appear directly next to the receiver?) or will the messages be all written down on one parchment, showing on the other linked one as well?

The characters were written well, Rarity might seem a little too science-y, but I can imagine she'd do anything for her business to flourish. Oh, and isn't her magic blue instead of purple? Or maybe is that some foreshadowing?

"Oh, and isn't her magic blue instead of purple? Or maybe is that some foreshadowing?"

... yes, you're absolutely right. Thank you, I completely fudged that up, with whipped cream and caramel drizzle. Mm, caramel...

ANYWAY!

"The one thing biting on my mind is this; will the spit-parchments travel between the boards (or maybe appear directly next to the receiver?) or will the messages be all written down on one parchment, showing on the other linked one as well?"

The dragon magick applied to Rarity's "spit-parchment" is inherently weaker than the fire breath Spike uses to transport physical objects. Basically, it is enough to relay simple written responses from the posting parchment to the poster's linked parchment. Which is basically what you'd guessed, so... yeah. YEAH!

"The characters were written well, Rarity might seem a little too science-y, but I can imagine she'd do anything for her business to flourish."

THANK YOU! I suffer with dialogue ALL THE TIME! I... really appreciate your liking my Dash and Rararara. AHEM! Too science-y? This is true. I just... I keep believing in my headcanon that Rarity is a business genius without showing even a shred of it socially amongst her sister Element mares - THIS IS HER CHANCE TO MAKE EVERYPONY STAND UP AND SEE HOW FABULOUS SHE ACTUALLY IS! She's intentionally and (hopefully) LITERALLY building the steps to change the world, just like Twilight. That comes into play later.

THANK YOU for liking and reading, EverfreePony! WOOHOO!

Sorry for replying this late, I was away and haven't received the notification :twilightsheepish:
Anyway, I'm glad to learn more and get some clarification.

You're welcome and I'm looking forward to the next chapters, what you said sounds really promising! :pinkiehappy:
