(Something of a return and) A Recommendation

Wow. Nearly six months. And I'm still not coming back yet.

That's not to say that I don't want to. I've rather enjoyed this chance to clear my head and get all of my ideas nicely outlined and flashed, which is just as well, because I have a glorious couple of weeks ahead to be filled with endless hours of... revision, for exams which have slipped past Cerberus to fester in the back, and rake their claws on the inside, of my head for the next few weeks.

And then it's off to the magical land of dissertation fieldwork. Yay!

But after that, some... weeks into the future, I will be back to writing, beginning with a collaborative effort with a friend of mine.

You may have heard of him before: Tofazz. He's just released a story to celebrate his first anniversary on the site.

Well, doesn't this seem redundant; I've effectively been on one since the start of September!

But I think it's time I made it official:

I will be taking a break from writing, planning, revising, honing, or even (hopefully) conceiving ideas for ponyfics for... an indeterminate amount of time.

I would like to thank you all for being so patient with me thus far; I think Cenitopius' post a few hours ago was the first 'UPDATE!!!!oneeleven111' style comment I've gotten yet, and even then it was very tentative.

I don't know what to tell you all. Maybe it's the exams looming on the horizon, or maybe it's the fact that, lately, I haven't been writing anywhere near as much as I used to, but it's just not coming to me at the moment.

I'm sorry to disappoint you all, especially as I promised the ending to So What'll It Be, Dashie? by now, but I think it would be better if I were to complete it properly rather than quickly.

So... that's it for now, I suppose. Hopefully I won't be gone for too long, and I'll be back to the time when my muse was gently coaxed into typing with tea and biscuits, as opposed to being forced to at knife-point.

    Bye for now

    A Clarification

Right, this post is going to be fairly... spoiler-ish with regards to Three Little Words. Therefore, if you would like to maintain some semblance of surprise, I'd scroll back up the page.

    Now. :raritywink:

Okay, since you've stuck around, you may be wondering what exactly Three Little Words was about, or wanted to know precisely why I would mock something held quite dear by many in the fandom.

With that in mind, I intend to clarify exactly what my stance is on 'Love and Tolerance'.

There is a TL;DR version available at the end, just in case you've already had enough of sifting through a wall of text from me. So, without further ado, here's a very slightly cropped version of something I prepared earlier :twilightsheepish::

"Basically, the idea for Three Little Words was born out of the threads during Derpygate. Not about the change, at all, but about one little sentence in Kreoss' reply: 'you're forgetting you own motto'.

And that got me thinking. 'Love and Tolerance'. Is that really such a good idea?

Now, obviously, I know there is a difference between the words 'love' and 'tolerance' and the meaning of the phrase 'Love and Tolerance'. The phrase describes the general atmosphere of the community, which I think could best be summed up in a little speech I was going to give to Celestia in this story:

"Of course, it is a wonderful land, Equestria, where the magic of harmony and friendship are held deep in the hearts of everypony.

But that doesn't mean that everypony will always get along, and nor should you worry about that. Some ponies love frills and fashion; some could hardly care for it. Some ponies love to run around and play all day; some would think it a terrible waste of their time for learning. You're all different, and myself and Luna love each and every one of you for it.

So you should never feel afraid to express your opinion, or to disagree with somepony. The important thing is to try and keep hatred from seeping into your words. Be respectful, be accepting of your differences, but, most importantly, accept that other ponies are just as entitled to an opinion as you."

A little wordy, and probably un-Celestia-ish, but that basically sums it up, as does some parts of Pinkie's monologue near the end. And, for the most part, we do stick to broadly that idea.

So, my issue was 'Where do the words 'love' and 'tolerance' come into that?'

Okay, 'Love' I can understand, and to be honest that was directed more at the people you agree with. But 'Tolerance'?

When I think tolerance, I think Wilt from FHFIM. Tolerance is when you simply put up with something, irrespective of your own opinion, and, to me, it is just about the laziest response to an issue that there possibly is. Not only because you do nothing in terms of support or opposition, but because you don't change your own view. You don't accept anyone else's opinions or viewpoint, or grow as an individual; you just grit your teeth and bear it, letting the hatred and anger build up.

And that, I think, would be an awful lesson for a children's show. Which is good, because the show doesn't actually teach it in the slightest.

However, going by some of the threads and comment responses, you would think that love and tolerance would be the entire message of the show. Especially in the blanket manner that some people in the fandom appear to throw it out for every, single issue. Now, I know that those people are referring to the ideas behind 'Love and Tolerance', of respect for each other, acceptance of differences, polite discourse etc., and not what those words actually mean. But, as a 'semantics-nazi', as it were, it constantly makes me feel as if you can't criticise or disagree with anything and be a Brony at the same time.

So that's where this idea came from. To sum it up in one sentence, this is how I imagine Pinkie would react to discover that all of her friends had to adhere to the new values of 'love' and 'tolerance'. "

TL;DR: I have no issues at all with what people usually mean when they ask for 'Love and Tolerance' (that is, to remember the show's lessons and values). I think they're fine. I think that they should be encouraged! :pinkiehappy:

I just think, and this is probably me thinking too deep, that we could give these values a better moniker--because the current one is wrong without ever looking like it's wrong.

Despite the failure ringing in her ears, Rainbow Dash is able to move on from one of her less-successful flight forays. However, just as she overcomes her own problems, a certain pink mare gets entirely the wrong idea.

(Edit as of 02/01/12: Some slight alterations to clear up something I only very loosely hinted at first time around. And I made Soarin' sound less of an airborne blob.)

Well, that was a nice feel-good short story, and a pretty damn decent subversion. I reckon you can feel proud of having made it.

Lol, now I'll only laugh at all 'Dash kills herself' stories. They hold tryouts twice at year, come on, nothing to kill yourself about!

#6 · 159w, 6d ago · · ·

Nice.  As others have said, this is vastly superior to the ol' "Dash is so distraught she tries to off herself" trope.

#7 · 159w, 6d ago · · ·

Bravo!  I agree wholeheartedly.  The despondent Dash stories do hold some appeal for their emotional impact, but they're way overdone.  Way to turn the tables and put the gut-punch on sompeony else for misjudging her! :rainbowdetermined2:

Very well written story! Not so slow that it feels like nothing is going on, yet not so fast it feels like you're just trying to get it done as fast as possible! :pinkiehappy:

Pinkie has been using the fourth wall to read too many "Dash commits Suicide" stories.

This is the first thing I thought of after I read the first "Dash commits suicide" fic. What the hell, seriously? She wouldn't kill herself. She's the Element of Loyalty, and that doesn't just pertain to her friends: She's loyal to herself, too. If she wasn't, do you really think she'd succeed in performing the Sonic Rainboom a second time? She failed endlessly, but she never gave up. Dash is too stubborn to let something like a little failure get in her way.

So screw your tragic suicide stories.

#15 · 159w, 3d ago · · ·

Am I the only one that sorta kinda thought maybe Pinkie'd get depressed instead and be the one to commit suicide? Just kinda felt like that might have been a possibility...

#16 · 159w, 3d ago · · ·

Never read a "Dash commits suicide" fiction (too smart for that) but this would throw them out of the barn, I'm sure. Excellent work.

#18 · 159w, 3d ago · · ·

Wow, not only is this an entertaining fic in its own right, but it kicks those Dash suicide fics in their collective asses. Well done! :rainbowlaugh:

#19 · 159w, 2d ago · · ·

I haven't read any "Dash commits suicide" stories, either... but this story is a perfect remedy.  Thank you.

:rainbowdetermined2: will make it next time!

#20 · 159w, 2d ago · · ·

 A perfect heartwarmer really, partly because it does indeed characterize the two perfectly.  Pinkie is the one who would go out searching first and would be the pony excitable enough to jump to THAT conclusion... Or she'd been reading a bunch of "Dash commits suicide" fics lately (Really? You think Dashie would leave her friends hanging like that? :rainbowhuh:  I AM BEGINNING TO DOUBT THE VERISIMILITUDE OF YOUR STORY GOOD SIR.).

I look forward to more works from you, Arbie.  A six-star and watch from me.

#21 · 159w, 2d ago · · ·

oh finally THANK YOU.

I've been WAITING for somebody to finally say something about the downright PLETHORA of dashie-suicide fics out there. Yes, it's sad, heartwrenching, and deeply-moving...the first time. After reading the same damn story for the 3rd time it gets old. I see this as a bit of a call-out for people to think up a new story for a change, and I thank you for that. Dashie said it best herself: “did you seriously think that I’d…kill myself?!”

Kudos, author.

#22 · 159w, 7h ago · · ·

I think it's really close to story ,,To fix you", with another Rainbow suicide. This story have in all reasons that Rainbow shouldn't jum of that cloud. This is like an another beggining of  ,,To fix you" but with happy ending. You should read it first..

While I have no idea what all these "Dash commits suicide" fics are about(other than the obvious, of course), I'd like to point out that people are mistaken when they think being the Element of Loyalty would prevent Dash from committing suicide, because it harkens to a mistaken belief that suicidal people are all selfish.

Those with suicidal thoughts are not mentally healthy. They're not thinking straight, not looking at things the same way as you might. It's very easy to convince yourself, when you're not mentally healthy, that offing yourself is actually beneficial to your friends and family, if you feel like you're a burden. In a mentally disturbed state, Dash could easily convince herself that she was living up to her Loyalty by removing that burden.

Of course, she'd be wrong about what she's doing, but she wouldn't be doing it because she's being selfish, but because she, in that state, would honestly believe it's for the best.

Now, do I think that Dash would actually turn suicidal if she failed to get into the Wonderbolts? Of course not. I simply take issue with the viewpoint that suicidal behavior is selfish, and had to explain why it wasn't.

This just showed up in my alerts for being added to groups. According to FimFic I haven't read it, but I know I have. I just wanted to say that it's nice that somebody has perspective. Dash would no more kill herself over the 'Bolts than Pinkie would kill herself over being snubbed for a party. Could she go through a lot of mental crap that affects her behavior? Sure, but with all the crashing she does trying to perform tricks Dash _knows_ that you don't always nail something the first time.

Now for the parts I like less.

The ponies never really seem to identify themselves by their Elements unless those happen to be in play. Dash doesn't go around thinking "I'm loyal" anymore than Pinkie thinks about being Laughter. They just are. There's an old blog post someone did, Donny's Boy maybe, where he talks about why Dash picking Tank works so well and why Dash is floored at the cheering after she saves Rarity and the 'Bolts. Loyalty and being loyal aren't things she dwells on. She just is. It's not remarkable to her, just part of _being_. The reason she won't kill herself is because she's not the kinda pony to let a setback stop her. Maybe there is a "don't abandon" thing in play, but it's not something she'd be consciously aware of.

I only spend so long talking about it because it's one of those subtle points that really gets to me on occasion. Pretty much everything except Dash's overt reference to her Element is great.

outstanding keep on writing

#29 · 72w, 3d ago · · ·

Never read a dash suicide fic because this would be how they end, misinterpretation from dash's determination :raritywink: great writing, can't wait to see more of your stuff
