What's with all the color changes in the story. It's pretty distracting and makes an otherwise enjoyable story annoying to read.

Then that is an unfortunate consequence of artistic indulgence.
The differing colours have a purpose tied to the underlying story. They were meant to simply make the conflict a bit more evident.
I still find this wistful, pleasantly final, yet with a touch of sadness others may perceive greater. I like this flavour of sadness.
Within this hollowed path,
finding still there are joys this night.
See the never extinguished bliss;
that even into that sleep,
the dream goes on forever more.
