While on a new assignment for the Foal Free Press, the Cutie Mark Crusaders stumble upon the tale of Greased Lightning, a pegasus who once challenged for the title of 'The Fastest Flyer in Equestria,' but vanished after a freak accident in his final race. Intrigued and curious, the Crusaders set out to find the fallen flyer, discovering a story filled with triumph, despair...and perhaps even redemption.

Great beginning to the story. It really grabs the reader. Can't wait to see what comes next!

This looks amazing and it smells of originality; I'm reading on!

Ah now that is kinda...good reason why Raindow doesn't favor Greased Lighting.

This story is soooooo good written I am waiting for the next chapter:pinkiesmile:

Race. Race. Race!

Aw, I was cheering on Greased Lighting on this one

3788333 Don't worry—he'll get another chance. :raritywink:

Okay, so the story is pretty much finished, I have to say it was an enjoyable ride, and what I really liked about the story the most (and ironically a major source of my confusion) was the constant change in "feels" towards the characters, at first I genuinely thought rainbow was mostly in the right...but sooner than later the inclusion of GL in the story took a flip to that and made me sympathize with Lightning moreso than I did with rainbow, and it wasn't just crippled sympathy anymore. Gl might have been wrong in keeping rainbow waiting (permanently pretty much), but I do feel kinda bad that rainbow still holds that grudge even after his....."not" amendment.

Sure you can chalk it up to her being unable to solve that chapter of her life due to his "refusal" to the challenges and subsequent accident....but it kinda feels sad, not for greased though, I didn't feel much sadness in his written lines, but RD was a whole different story, showing off the worst parts of her character (brash, competitive strive and all that) while kinda telling us that deep down she just can't ask him to say he's sorry and has to insult him, throw names at him and so on. The whole thing did kinda serve as a mirror between GL's previous idol training with other newcomers whilst out of his prime though.

All in all the story was a good read....it did leave me kinda empty towards RD but hey, maybe your epilogue will try to do something about the whole situation.

PS: As for character ages, what are your stories given ages for all of em? I mean some characters are self-explanatory, RD being at least 18 and all that, but I can't really trace down the former racer's age's without leaving it at early thirties (possible late twenties).

3860790 I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the story! I'm still working on Rainbow Dash's 'redemptive' moment, so hopefully the epilogue will address that.

As far as pony ages: Looking back, I don't think I gave them enough thought. My initial impression was that the mane 6 were in their mid-to-late twenties,* and Greased Lightning was in his early-to-mid forties. However, if Rainbow is almost 18 at the time of the accident, Shining Armor's assertion that the accident was 12-13 years ago puts RD at almost 30 or 31 :rainbowderp:, which seems a little old. (Declaring that Lightning is 40 would give him a 10-year career before the accident, which seems a bit more plausible.) Then you've got the CMCs, who seem like they couldn't be more than 10 years old...all things considered, I may have to go back and fix the numbers at some point.

*I blame Twilight for this, but that's another discussion entirely.

Welp, here it is. I found the chapter to be good enough....a bit short, but it definitely cut it's loose ends. I kinda expected more of an on-screen redemption scene, but the implied passage of time kinda tells me that Rainbow eventually warmed up to Lightning (as well as the final scene between them). All in all it was a good ride, some hiccups along the way but a good ride nevertheless.

PS: Do you have Greased's age yet (:D, I kinda want to know if what I guessed was right (36). Also I know this is probably meant to be a riddle for the ages (though again not really), but in your opinion, we're lightning still full and in his prime how exactly would the flying race have played out? I mean I'm about 90% sure dash would've won but still.

3886914 I haven't made any changes to the timeline yet, but as things stand right now:
-GL started racing right out of high school (he started at 18),
-he won five straight Cloudsdale Derbies (so his career lasted at least 5 years), and
-it's been 12-13 years since the accident (so at least 12).

That means Greasy is at least 35 when he meets Apple Bloom. Personally, I see him as somewhere between 40-42, but 36 is still a possibility.

As for a GL vs. RD race in Lightning's prime: Turbo Jet thinks Rainbow would win, and I'm inclined to agree with him. Alas, we'll never really know. :raritywink:

Going to read this again :D

I'm glad RD warmed up to Greased Lightning at least a little at the end. What a great story! A true pleasure to read.

4961351 Cool! I'd also recommend Cassie and Three Days In The Cooler as stories you might enjoy.

4964062 I'm glad you enjoyed it! :pinkiehappy:
