Loved this. I don't normally like Dash stories either, but this was very nicely done. Honest, real, and warm, with every character spot-on.
It was a pretty good story; with steller vocabulary and spot on-characters.
But it confuses me about the fact that Rainbow's son is a bat-pony 
The unnusual genes seem a bit random without any real info about the father
Id wanna know who Dream's dad was...since spitting out a random batpony hasnt been heard of yet.At the same time, it hasnt been debunked yet.
Kind of curious as to what is giong to happen to Rainbow now..OBVIOUSLY they wouldnt punt her for losing a race, but I dunno, I personally like more closure than open ended stuff.

The Cakes, two Earth Ponies, managed to produce twins who happened to be a Unicorn and a Pegasus.
Pony genetics are freaky. Perhaps Dream just won the genetic lotto. Or maybe Luna got a bit too involved in one of Dash's more intimate dreams.
This story touched my heart.
And as soon as I have that gaping chest wound sewn up, I'll give this a thumbs up.
(Seriously, I once thought "I'll never feel old 'cause I've never felt young". Time has endeavored to disabuse me of that notion.)
