Would defer on the previous, but disagree on the latter for the simple thought experiment of:
In a world of no evil, were you to come across someone on the street who was thirsty it would be good to give them a spare bottle of water, but were this person in the hospital and in dire need of a kidney transplant, it would be a greater good to give him your spare kidney. So it is logically false to say their would be no good without evil. There would just be good and greater good.
Now, of course I'm not saying that a story should remain in such a realm where there is only good, just that it sets a questionable tone when a character is supposed to have "understanding" of all things in the universe but whose narrative is set up stating that there is a need for evil to exist rather than sticking closer to the point that all people are sinful and could do with a bit of cleaning up their act so to speak.
