Welp, this is was...amazing. I love the Cake's origin story. I'm happy that you finally posted it here. What can I say about this? The characters have dimension, it's well written, it's adorkable (I love awkward teenage Carrot and Cupcake) and d'awww. My favorite part is how Carrot sees Cupcake and how much he tries, the guy's got spirit.

Once again your writing doesn't fail to touch me with its beauty. This is such a sweet, emotional story, and it's delightful to see Carrot and Cupcake grow more confident as a result of their love for each other. The intermissions of Being Quarry are intriguing and have my excited as to where this story is going - even if the end point is already known, the journey is going to be very interesting. As far as I'm concerned, this is the canon origin of the Cakes - it's that well written.
Yes, this story is also the background tale of Ivory Script, who we all know and love as the hair-dyed Mayor Mare! I stole her name from Past Sins by Penstroke!

Quarry is an... interesting... figure throughout the rest of these first chapters. I don't expect you to empathize with him, but I hope you get to understand him as the story progresses.

She and her family have appeared in a series of little vignettes starting in chapter 2, and will appear in little scenes until her big reveal! She plays an important role in the life of the Cakes, so expect her appearance to be part of their growth!

Alright, I think I'm long overdue for a comment, but now that we're four chapters into the story and I've read them all I have enough of a feel for it so I can voice my thoughts!
First off all I'm really happy that you're doing a backstory for the Cakes. It's great to see a story dedicated to them since they don't usually get a lot of attention from writers. I'm also loving the adorable if sometimes awkward interaction of Carrot and Cupcake, and the pacing of their budding relationship feels just right. I'd say you're doing great with the romance side of the story.
Now for the thing that's bothering me a little: where's the conflict in the story? I mean, I know that you've shown us pieces of what's coming, Quarry, Pinkie and the 'Game of this'... But we're four chapters in and we don't really know a whole lot about the conflict in the story. It's one thing to keep Carrot in the dark but as the reader I want to at least have a general idea of what's happening. Of course I remember you mentioning that this story is going to be a long one, and it's entirely possible that this is just a slow start / lot of world-building you're doing before the main events kick off in earnest.
Anyway, I'm having a great time so far so keep those chapters coming!

You are absolutely right that there needs to be a conflict, and there are three rounds of "The Game of This" that will be played. The chapter I update here in a few minutes will give to a strong hint as to where the conflict is coming from and where it is headed! I hope!

As for why I think Quarry's the mayor he said "My Ponyvillie" and it sounds to me like that means he hold's high authority, and you can't get any higher than mayor, unless you're looking to bust Celestia down a few pegs. 
Yeah, that is about what I was suspecting we were eventually going to learn about Quarry, as well as the reason for the Game. Nice reveal, by the way, having the start of the chapter be about 'Cupcake's father' right up until we got the "Thank you, Mister Quarry!" from Pinkie and her sisters.

I'm glad to see that Quarry has grown as a character in your eyes. Glad that the funeral scene brought up some emotion!

I actually don't know how to feel about the drama. This is story is a giant flashback and things did work out fine in the end, but I still feel the tension because Quarry is truly one scary mother fucker.
Well, of all the ways for Carrot to find out, I can't tell you how relieved I am that it was this way. Not that Carrot is out of the woods yet, but at least he understands the game now.
Man, you have me absolutely gripped with this story. Your writing, as always, is fantastic. Please, don't stop trying.

That's one thing that I think is working against the story... people know the ending, but as a historian I've always felt that the journey is the important thing. Thanks for sticking with it!
Your readership has really been one of the highlights of releasing the story here, John. I hope that once we reach the "false ending" next chapter you'll find the story just as engaging afterwards.

Wow, is best I can think of to describe my thoughts of this Chapter, no, this story.
The twist and turns of this story have me on the edge of my seat and wanting to read more of your story. Definitely going as my top favorite.

I see what you meant about the realtor not being in on the game not necessarily being a bad thing. We don't know how the Game would have gone down if Carrot hadn't gotten the loan from Quarry, but it looks like the way it did go down worked out well enough in the end.
Carrot is either the the bravest or the stupidest sum bitch that ever lived because he was nearly beaten to death by Quarry with a FUCKING WHIP. His balls must be the size of a god damn dump truck. Being whipped to death hold your ground and never surrender, laugh in the face of death and spit in the face of the grim reaper. Quarry the vaguely psychotic stallion with trust and anger management issues. I swear when you wrote this I'm picturing Liam Neeson as Quarry and I dare you to pick one else more perfect for the role of the scary stallion. Quarry shouldn't ever question whether Carrot is a liar because I doubt an other stallion would have suffered as much to prove himself. Carrot doesn't ever need to buy Cupcake an anniversary gift to proves he loves her, the proof is his scars. On a positive note note it'll be a great story to tell his kids: "You grand dad nearly beat me to death with a whip and your mother and grand mother had to stop him from killing me." Seriously, dude you made Mr. Cake into a bad ass. Congrats.

Fantastic chapter! While I wasn't surprised by anything here per se, I did thoroughly enjoy it and it's good to see the development of Carrot's character into the strong, capable stallion we all knew he truly was. And now you've got me curious as to how Pinkie gets wrapped into all of this...

Well I was wondering where pinkie pie fit into all this. Glad to see that the story will continue for a bit longer. It like coming to your destination after a long trip, but there is the great attraction or something just up the road. Another adventure awaits to get to that next stop.
Holy (expletive) thats a high word count. This my favorite chapter so far, and I'm glad to see that it's finally out of the bag, and that Carrot doesn't have to worry about Quarry destroying him anymore. Also, screw everypony else, Carrot Cake is Ponyville's biggest bad***. Now I'm wondering, where does Pinkie come into this? Can't wait to find out! BTW, what's Quarry's cutie mark? I don't recall it being mentioned, but I may have just missed it.

Yeah, imagine how I felt watching the word count go up as I wrote it! Pinkie comes into "full play" in three chapters. Next up is a couple of "reward chapters" with all the stuff that made me put the "teen" tag on this thing... ...
Oh, and Quarry's mark looks like a ladder coming out of a quarry pit. It shows his strength and how he's buried his emotions.
The fact that Carrot doesn't have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and the fact that he can even speak to Quarry without bolting for the door says a lot about his character. I really liked that proposal and that name really needs to change, I have a good feeling that Sugar Cube Corner wasn't Carrot's idea, but to be fair it was better than the other rejected names:

My only issue was "Suffice it to say that"- that was a little annoying like Chinese water torture. On the positive side, I learned that the name Sugar Cube Corner: A) It isn't some innocent name. B) It has nothing to do with baking or street locations. C) It was indeed Carrot's idea. D) It Came about through a hard night of f****ing in a resort hotel.
It's also nice to see that Cupcake's family has accepted Carrot.
I really like this fic and even if I already now the ending and how their first tries at conception are gonna fail and create drama/sadness, just because of the time setting, but like I said it's the journey not the destination that matters.
