This story is a sequel to Change of Hearts

Derpy has always thought Spike the dragon was a good kid, if a little busy, but when she finds him sitting alone in Whitetail Wood looking glum, she finds out that, despite the fact that he doesn't mind "being a pony," so to speak, he still wonders what it would have been like to have known his real mother or father. Derpy does her best to cheer him up, but in the end, it becomes obvious that this particular question runs a little too deep for a wall-eyed delivery mare to answer -- for him or for Twilight Sparkle.

However, when chance lands an unusual old box in her hooves, marked "Return Service Requested," it sends her on a journey that results in her learning more about the matter than it was perhaps good for her to know -- or Spike or Twilight, for that matter.

Before it's over with, though, she encounters a looney band of traders, an addlepated old soldier, and yes, a big, purple dragon -- a very, very BIG, purple dragon.

That's when things get potentially lethal.

I stumbled upon this story using the URL and I must say, it sounds really interesting!
Mind if I read it before it is out for the public?

Go ahead whenever you want. I'm gonna try to finish editing it tonight or tomorrow so I can submit it. I guess having someone find it early is just a hazard of writing it in FimFiction as opposed to copying it from a word processor, but it makes formatting easier for me.

Be warned: it's got some rough edges and a little bit of restructuring to be done. Like most of my writing does, it went in a radically different direction than I anticipated, and some parts of it feel a little rehashed from some of my earlier work. Also, there's an extremely minor subplot that I may end up removing. Since the general outline changed, the character tags aren't exactly right, either. Applebloom and Sweetie Belle don't really show up, for instance.

It also kinda flew off the handle on me and got a little weird for about the first half of the third chapter. I'm honestly afraid an entire little bit that I intended to be comedic may make some people angry, but I'm leaving it because I think most people will understand that there's no malicious intent behind it. It basically plays on the idea first presented in the show that the various non-pony races aren't always well-received. Zebras, for instance.

If none of that worries you, go right ahead. I've done the bulk of my editing already, and all that's left is for me to decide whether or not to add/remove anything, and do one final check for grammar, spelling, and smooth flow of narrative and dialog.

Of course, that could take until the weekend.

Thank you. I'm sure I'll write more of these Derpy fics, eventually.

I never know when they're going to happen, though. On this one, for instance, I had the idea regarding Spike's parentage years ago, but I never really knew how to approach it. I happened to be driving home from my own parents' a few weeks ago, and it came to me that I could do it as a "Misadventure of Derpy Hooves," and have Derpy more or less as an observer who had to consider all the implications of it and make a decision as to what she would do about it.

It might not have been the ideal way to employ the idea, but I think it turned out well enough for what it is.

This was very much one of the best stories I've read on this site.
I love this!

4987309 Thanks again. I don't know when, but I imagine I'll write at least one or two more of these, eventually. They're kind of cathartic because they're (believe it or not) not as heavy as what I usually write.

So, keep an eye open, and once again, thank you.

:yay:
I read all the Derpy Misadventures over a two day period, and that has to be one of my favorite choices to do so.

Well, they're screwed.:derpytongue2:

engaging in the ancient rite of the slumber party, courtesy of Princess Twilight Sparkle, who had assured their parents, Derpy included, that all proper procedure would be observed.

-If I were Derpy, I might have straight-up told Twilight what Spike's deal was... then again I'm sorta socially inept.

A lot of author's are big on wanting people to leave a comment explaining down votes so I'm going to try that in this case. Note that I have upvoted and fav'ed every previous installment. Anyway, my reason is: premarital cohabitation.
