It feels like he inflicted himself with a genie's curse, except instead of some metaphysical slate of laws binding him to granting wishes, it is his own (mutated) sense of duty and generosity.
Even it if means he is tearing himself apart to do it, literally.

Considering the effects Banneret ´s whishes are unleashing over the country (and probably the world) why haven´t the Princessses recruited new Bearers to blast him with the Rainbow?
Heck, they could even ask B himself to find and align the replacements.
Poor Spike. I know some would love such a world, but I can't bring myself to, while the idea of someone who is willing and capable of HELPING me being at my beck and call, the idea of someone doing everything for me? I just wouldn't be ale to accept that, I like doing things myself. Not to mention there is that certain satisfaction when one has performed a difficult task and succeeded. I'd ask for Spike to return to full health and that the ponies realize how low they have sunken, and that he only use his powers to help those that need it or truly desire it, for example, a blind pony wants his sight back, that's one thing, if a guy wants a new piece of chewing gum he could easily buy himself, no. Alas, due to Banneret's too generous nature, it could never happen. No matter what you can do, and that purification means alicornification, becoming a Nightmare is never worth it, as you've said Alex, they embody extremes, and while a little of something is tôt a problem, anything in excess in bad.

Should have sent those majority overrides coming, oh well. I do have two wishes. One, that you forever remain at full health. I may not personally like how you're basically a slave to every pony, but if you're at full health, you'd be able to help better since I'd imagine even your power isn't infinite. The other is that you be able to sleep and eat whenever you need. Still being able to help out of course, you wouldn't otherwise. I'm curious, being a Nightmare is basically incomplete alicornification, if you got purified by the elements of Harmony, what would you look like, I wonder. Off topic, have you ever considered asking others if they would like to help with your serving the entire world?

It's a one-shot. It's a what-if scenario from the Pony POV Verse.
BIIIIIIIIIG spoilers below for when he appears. Nightmare Bannerett appears at the climax of Dark World, along with the Nightmares of the other Mane Six minus Rarity, and attack Dark World timeline Twilight Sparkle and her companions (including the current timeline's Spike). They attack when Twilight of the Dark World timeline chooses to face the future and help rebuild and restore and give hope to the people living now instead of cheating fate and resetting time, (facing the future instead of resetting time would break the cycle of denial that feeds her Nightmare self's existence. basically Twilight's Nightmare self FEEDS on every Twilight Sparkle that chooses to cheat time rather than try to heal the world as is).

Hopefully, he would be about as strong as I would be, and so he would have the best chance of either being able to snap me out of it (preferred) or kill me (not preferred, but oh well). The other ponies probably wouldn't try to outvote me, because they would still be getting served, just by someone else. If that bothers them too, I amend my wish to also add that no-one except me, Spike, and anyone Spike wants to find out is aware that anything is different.

A lovely story. Poor, Spike. Twilight only ever wanted him to understand. This is not generosity, it is slavery. Generosity is not about what is given, but how it was given and how it was received. That's what I think anyway. Spike, by giving yourself no value or worth, you've killed the little dragon we all held dear to our hearts. You took him away. And that most assuredly, is not generous.
By the way, author. Do you think we'll get a one-shot or quick side-story of how Nightmare Para- er, Eclipse, recruited her Nightmare friends? We got a glimpse of Mirror, but not much else. And how very odd it was Mirror who recruited Whisper. How odd, indeed.

I simply can take seriously everything you write, probably it's because I can believe that those are the long-term consequences of what Discord started, and I can genuinely feel sad and depressed for seeing the characters and the world I love reduced to this, exactly as I did long ago watching The Return of Harmony.
A thing that I can't do with the majority of sad stories I have readed, simply because they lost the "MLP feeling"... or something like that.

I could so easily see Spike falling into this. He is unselfish, and that could lead him to be tragically-damned in the sense that Ayn Rand would have meant it, as a never-shrugging Atlas. I'm guessing that the reason Rarity can't bear his presence is that she is horrified to see how he has become nothing but the tool of everypony else, meaning that he can never really be himself -- that he has lost his self. This must be hell for both Twilight and Rarity, who each in their own ways love him.

The problem is that the RPers ended up IGNORING a lot of what others wrote, so it go very confusing even though an ending for it WAS written.
