The initial R-63 name put forth for female-Spike was "Spines."
However, many soon found that the name (Spines) did not "roll off the tongue" very well as a name for female-Spike.
Thus "Barb," as in short for "Barb(ara)," was developed, which is both more feminine sounding (obviously) and parallel-appropriate for wording (a barb in similar relation to a spike). Since then, "Barb(ara)" has gained majority popularity for fan-fiction & fan-artwork for R-63 Spike. "Spines" is also still used too, though; it is all a matter of personal preference at that point.
